The always say that and I just don't see it. If anything they look more ripped/less body fat with all the high contrast and high definition.

I never really felt it made them look heavier. In what way does the camera make an actor or actress look heavier or even wider?
 
Werd. Makes things wider. That's why stages look bigger than they actually are.
 
it's sort of an optical illusion cause your brain is accustomed to seeing things that are 3d rather than 2d.

you can see the effect if you look at stereoscopic images. the images for each eye will look fuller than the 3d image.

you can make people look more ripped with lighting but that can happen in real life aswell. some shops use lighting like that in the changing rooms.

I once was told be a filmmaker/photographer: It's not who is being shot, it's who is shooting. Bad angles are usually at fault.
