I'm confused. Was Mathis a traitor at all? Was it Vesper that told Le Chiffre that Bond knew his tell, and later in the movie Le Chiffre lied and said it was Mathis? Was Vesper just screaming off-screen for effect when Bond was being tortured? Is that why she didn't grant him the $5 million re-buy? I'm just curious if anyone has the answer.

In the book Mathis is not the traitor. I imagine it'd be the same in the movie since the plots were very close.

In the movie Mathis was a traitor. Vesper was working for Mr White and his organization, not Le Chiffre.

I dunno, I've heard Mathis comes back in Bond 22 and is revealed to be a good guy

I think he comes back in bond 22, and works with MI6, even though he used to be a bad guy. They probabaly make a deal with him or something.

Maybe, I hope not though. He wasn't a bad guy in the books so now that he's in the movies he shouldn't be a bad guy in them either

I heard he either was, or will be, a triple agent.

Either way I hope he isn't made out to be a proper bad guy. In the novels he used to pop up from time to time.
