racist or not?

When I see that cover my mind does not immediately think racism

OMG! It's true!

Look!

The Black one is always depicted as a SCARY BEAST, while the White ones are friendly and civilized!

there is no black one, mel b is mixed raced, she can get away with it, she's half yours...

whoever brought up that King Kong/race crap after seeing that cover needs to be slapped in the face. i take it they'd rather see Giselle looking like a beast while LeBron holds his basketball in a prissy demeanor.

I don't see what's racist about it in any way. People need s*** to do in their lives if they go about complaining over every little thing.

It's not racist, at all. People who are out there looking for things to be racist are the real bigots.

this kinda reminds me of an episode of South park where they were going to change the town flag

I really don't see what's so racist about this cover; I don't get any King Kong vibe from LeBron, and Gisele doesn't look like she's scared or anything. I think sometimes the PC police are way over their head.

Hehe...just another example of the world spinning out of control.

This sounds like something that should go in the "Ask a Black Dude" thread.

Ordinarily I'd say it wasn't racist but if I'm reading things right, this is the first black guy they've had on the cover of Vogue. They put a lot of thought into their front covers and you do have to wonder why they want to present the first black dude on their magazine cover in this way.

Or....erm...why he presented himself that way?

I can assure you, if I was ever on the cover of Vogue, they could not get a pose like that out of me.

Maybe. Though I can easily picture some poncy photographer saying "I want him to display his SAVAGERY!!". I dunno.

Nice to see ya Wilhelm. Thought maybe you had died.

Is it true there's only been three black people on the cover of Vogue? If that's so, then why do two out of those three have to look ridiculous, with mouths open, and in stupid poses.

the gist of the article

But the image is stirring up controversy, with some commentators decrying the photo as perpetuating racial stereotypes. James strikes what some see as a gorilla-like pose, baring his teeth, with one hand dribbling a ball and the other around Bundchen’s tiny waist.
It’s an image some have likened to “King Kong” and Fay Wray.
“It conjures up this idea of a dangerous black man,” said Tamara Walker, 29, of Philadelphia.
Photographer Annie Leibovitz shot the 6-foot-9 NBA star and the 5-foot-11 Brazilian model for the cover and an inside spread. Vogue spokesman Patrick O’Connell said the magazine “sought to celebrate two superstars at the top of their game” for the magazine’s annual issue devoted to size and shape.

“So when you have a cover that reminds people of King Kong and brings those stereotypes to the front, black man wanting white woman, it’s not innocent,” he said.

In a column at ESPN.com, Jemele Hill called the cover “memorable for all the wrong reasons.” But she said in an interview that the image is not unusual — white athletes are generally portrayed smiling or laughing, while black sports figures are given a “beastly sort of vibe.”

how do you feel about the picture? I don't know, but i can see what they're saying.. and i can honestly see some racists as actually seeing that. ...i just don't know. I definitely think they did to be racially provocative given the Lebron is the first black man to be featured on a vogue cover.
Can it not be sexist as Bundchen is cluthed in someone's arms and not a prominent woman are her on? That she can only be happy with a man:huh:

Sorry but that shoot is meant to show that James is powerful and scary. If people want him holding a cup of tea and reading the New York Times...whatever. But guess what else? People being shot have the ability to say no:o If they think it is racist, they wouldn't do it. Therefore, what does it matter?

I guess the people that thought something is wrong with the cover have never watched any highlights of LeBron on ESPN. There are plenty of times where he's yelled after making a shot, blocked a shot, or if talks smack.

But now that he's on the cover of Vogue, he's likened to King ****ing Kong?!
