Rare’s Multiplayer Pirate Adventure Sea Of Thieves Is About Trust And Treasure. June 15, 2015 . 4:46pm

Rare announced a new multiplayer pirate adventure for Xbox One and PC that’ll be out in holiday 2016.

[YT]1z48qvGsA_0[/YT]
Rare announced a new pirate-themed multiplayer game called Sea of Thieves during Microsoft’s E3 press conference. It’ll be heading to PC and Xbox One in holiday 2016.

Craig Duncan, head of Rare, only said about Sea of Thieves during the announcement that it’s “a game that will allow our players to have unique and memorable adventures together, a shared world adventure game. The freedom to play with limitless possibilities.”

The trailer shows that it’ll be played from a first-person perspective and will give you a seemingly open world to explore. To do so, you’ll need to operate ships to sail across the seas with a crew of online players – some hoisting sails, others steering, and in the case of encountering other ships, operating the cannons.

The idea in Sea of Thieves seems to be to find islands and search them for treasure. There’s a day and night cycle and so if it gets dark you may need to walk around with a lamp in hand in order to light the way. In one scene, the player bops open a chest they’ve found, which triggers skeletons to rise from the ground and attack them.

But what happens after you find some treasure?

In one scene, a player is forced to walk the plank into shark-infested waters, implying that they betrayed their crew. Perhaps it’s because they decided to try to steal the crew’s treasure. It seems like it’d be possible and will pose you with questions of loyalty upon finding treasure: do you keep it for yourself, or distribute it with your crew?

Hmm, looks ok but not something I'll be playing till a good time after it comes out.

I've got the sneaking suspicion that this won't be that good and MS is using Rare's good name to pass it off as something more...

They haven't got a good name any more outside of old classics, so people will buy Rare Replay but will be wary of a new Rare game if anything. They need to use this opportunity to try and reestablish themselves.

Sea of Thieves ‘Play it First’ contest announced

Win an all expenses paid trip to England.

Sea-Thieves-Contest-Ann_03-09-16.jpg

Rare is holding a contest to win an all expenses paid trip to its studio in Leicestershire in England to be the first person outside the studio to play its upcoming Sea of Thieves.

To enter, all you have to do is create an image or video that shows how excited you are to play Sea of Thieves.

The content must be created by you. It should not be “standard talkto-to-camera stuff,” but rather something creative and unique. Rare offers a couple of examples: “Try building your own ship. Craft and wear the most elaborate and glorious fake beard you can think up.”

Once you’ve created your image, you can tweet a link to it @SeaofThieves on Twitter, or share it on the game’s official Facebook page.

Read the full set of rules here.

Sea of Thieves was first announced for Xbox One and PC at E3 2015.

Ugh why did it have to be an MMO?

Pass.

If they're going to do a pirate MMO (which could be interesting) and ask us to invest a lot of time, I'd rather see it in an Assassin's Creed: Black Flag style than this.

I was really excited about Sea of Thieves as an open world pirate adventure game. The Skyrim of the Caribbean, if you will. I was even thinking about buying an X-Box 1 for it. Then it was announced that it is an MMO. Pass.

I kind of like MMOs but I don't how anyone can play more than one or 2 seriously. They just take up so much more time than other games.

Looks fun but and i like MMO's but eh don't know yet

Sea of Thieves shies away from friendly fire and permanent loss

July 19, 2016 19 Comments

Rare is still feeling out the “emergent world” of Sea of Thieves as the game nears its closed beta testing phase. In an interview with AusGamers, the studio expressed how it’s trying to strike a balance between allowing players to be proper pirates without robbing the game of a sense of community and fun.

“We wanted a game that wasn’t overly punishing like a DayZ or EVE Online [where] you’ve got these shared roles where there’s a lot of loss and it’s permanent,” said Design Director Gregg Mayles. “So we’ve [been trying] to find the balance; the world needs to feel like there’s peril and you can lose your ship and you can die, but it’s not the kind of loss where [you’re punished unfairly].”

If you were hoping that Sea of Thieves would allow you to turn on your fellow crewmates, then this isn’t the game for you. Rare disabled friendly fire once it saw how it negatively impacted early tests, and instead the studio worked on adding incentives for teams to work together.

Rare also posted its very first episode of its “Tales from the Tavern” podcast for the upcoming game. You can listen to it after the break!

Sea of Thieves will give pirates musical instruments to fill the time

August 12, 2016 9 Comments

Pirates don’t just live by the code of the sword and skull; sometimes a good buccaneer likes to fill his or her day with some jaunty sea tunes.

In the spirit of this, Sea of Thieves has plans to implement musical instruments for characters to play during their journeys.

“We wanted to put in instruments in a way that is lighthearted and fun and fits the tone,” Senior Designer Shelly Preston said in the project’s maiden “short haul” video. Players can pick up instruments and join together to provide some aural atmosphere as they go on adventures and wait for the action to begin.

Tap out a merry tune as you watch the video after the break.

Sea of Thieves sees Xbox and PC as ‘equal partners’

August 17, 2016 29 Comments

When Sea of Thieves releases, it won’t just be on console; Rare is developing the game for both the Xbox One and Windows 10. In a new developer video, the studio explains why it’s giving both platforms equal attention.

“We have to build credibility in [the PC] space,” said Executive Producer Joe Neate. “I think it’s important that we do get people to understand that we are taking this as a really serious platform, that PC and Xbox One are equal partners. That they’re both as important as each other to us.”
The developers assured fans that the studio is “full of PC players,” just in case you were worried that they were completely prejudiced against computers for some reason. You can listen in on the discussion after the break.

Sea of Thieves podcast talks about Gamescom and community questions

September 2, 2016 12 Comments

The wise sailor knows that a salty pirate is nothing if not long-winded, especially if you provide enough grog. So for the second episode of the Sea of Thieves podcast, the team jaws for an entire hour about the game. Obviously, the most important thing you want to know from it is, “Has any fan got a tattoo of the game’s logo?” And the answer is, yes they did, and yes, it means the team now has to make a good game.

The team spent a good amount of time beating around the bush of specifics as to what players will be able to do in Sea of Thieves. What it comes down to, according to the devs, is that there will be a heap of everything: “There are a mix of sandbox elements and defined goals.”
You can listen to the second episode after the jump!
