As Sea of Thieves sails across the choppy waters of its technical alpha tests, the team makes a point to occasionally descending the rigging to give a report in podcast form.

In the game’s latest Tales from the Tavern Podcast, discussion of the technical alpha takes the center stage, with the team saying that 23,000 players were invited for the most recent test, bringing the crowd up to 39,000 in total. This number is only for console, as PC players are still waiting to be included in the testing program (progress is being made on this front, don’t you worry).

The team reports that there’s a lot of improvements in the technical alpha, such as underwater swimming, finite ship resources, better sword gameplay, and retuning skeleton difficulty. One feature that’s only in the discussion phase is a spyglass, which presents the team with many technical challenges.

See the Sea of Thieves devs become tourists in their own game

Just because you make a game doesn’t mean that you are an automatic expert in it. In the latest Sea of Thieves developer gameplay video, the team shows that even they can become tourists under the right circumstances.

This week, the devs faced off against a team of Xbox players as they raced to scour islands, dig up treasure, and sprint back to a safe port with their booty. Armed conflict and plenty of deaths ensue while the devs start caterwauling in distress.

See the devs play the role of noobs below!

Get ready to sail the high seas in March 2018.

Two years ago, the world was introduced to Sea of Thieves during Microsoft’s E3 2015 press conference in what was essentially a small concept video. Development, by today’s standards, has been slow, as this is now the third E3 that Sea of Thieves has attended. Fortunately, it is also the last.
Rare took to the stage to show a different side of Sea of Thieves this time around, whereas virtually everything to this point has been about PVP between Pirate crews at sea, the game will also feature some slight elements involving supernatural creatures.
Here’s the gameplay demo from the Xbox presser:

[YT]rbE8BnO6oug[/YT]
Rare had previously teased undead creatures as AI enemies in the past, and it certainly adds a new dynamic to the game. As you probably already know, Sea of Thieves has been in a Closed Alpha state for the last six months, and development will continue to be on-going.
It’s been a long wait for Xbox One fans, but given how incredible this E3 conference has been to this point, better times are just over the horizon.

Sea of Thieves
is the latest game from Rare, exclusive to Xbox One and Windows. According to Rare, it's "The best thing [they've] ever done," and is inarguably one of the most anticipated games of this year. If that wasn't reason enough to dive in, it's currently on Amazon for CDN$39.89.

That's right, $39.89 Canadian. It's the official listing from Microsoft, even. So why is the game on sale for 50% off before it even comes out? It may be a listing error, so if you're planning on getting the game on Xbox One, it would be wise to snatch it up quick.

Sea of Thieves had a great exposition at E3 this year, check it out our coverage if you're not 100% convinced yet.
The game releases on December 29, 2017.

It's a big decision to head into one.

Sea of Thieves is laying it on with little details as evidenced by Developer Rare's latest episode of Inn-side Story, which focuses on the game's Storm systems. While storms aren't anything new to games, Rare's emphasis on their dramatic effect is what stands out. Not only do they look cool, but they affect how you navigate and maintain the ship, just like in the movies.
Here's the video:
[YT]v7DgXtX2rXk[/YT]
As you can see, there's more to sailing than just figuring out a direction and then going there. It's easy to imagine a scenario where a storm stands between you and an island with treasure on it, but going around the storm might force you to engage with an enemy player. So deciding what kind of perils you will face could be a natural and emergent moment simply via the inclusion of Sea of Thieves' storm systems.
Sea of Thieves is coming off a strong showing at E3 2017, where Rare teased the game's storm systems for the first time. Rare is very confident in the game as they have previously called it "the greatest thing [they've] ever done."
Sea of Thieves will release at some point in 2018.

The quest for the Four Feathers.

As Sea of Thieves continues its extensive Closed Alpha phase, Rare has once again released another edition of Developer Gameplay, this time focusing on the Engineering Team and their quest to find treasure marked by Four Feathers. In the video, the team encounters an island, much like the one seen during the E3 2017 gameplay demo, and shows how quickly plans can fall apart and why thinking and acting on the fly can be its own greatest reward.
Here it is:

[YT]TfjptNa8B-o[/YT]

The demo is the perfect example of how you can be so far apart in Sea of Thieves, but still dynamically take on a role in order to keep the team moving towards your goal. Be it keeping your pirate ship out of harm's way from enemy players or taking out the skeleton cannoneer trying to bombard your vessel from the shore. There seem to be so many possibilities with the game, and it's exciting to see it all come together.

Sea of Thieves still doesn't have a concrete release date, but is said to be coming sometime in "Early 2018." If you're interested in checking out the game as it is right now, you can still sign up to be a part of the Insider Program, which lets you take part in periodic playtests. Assuming, of course, you get chosen by the devs.

Sea of Thieves talks up its quintessential pirateness in a new top 10 video

[YT]hfei3v6sP2M[/YT]
Rare has a new Sea of Thieves video out this week that is a listicle… a listavid? I don’t know. It’s a video that is a list, and this particular list talks up 10 of the game’s high points: its “quintessential pirateness,” friendship-oriented gameplay, deep exploration, opportunity to write your own legend, console/PC crossplay, stream-friendliness, and Rare’s own experience building games, welcoming community, and current test schedule. Mutiny not required!Read more

Sea of Thieves’ death penalty is unique — and social

September 22, 2017 19 comments

What happens when you die? Sea of Thieves has its own unique answer to the question. Instead of popping back at a binding point or doing a corpse run, dead characters will arrive on the (pause for dramatic effect) FERRY OF THE DAMNED. Featuring Skipper Dan.

In this week’s dev video, Senior Designer Shelley Preston talks about how the team wanted to make this ferry a social space while players wait their time-out period. Players who kick the bucket around the same time will appear on the ship together,Read more

Hate voice chat? You can make it walk the plank in Sea of Thieves

October 9, 2017 14 comments

If you’ve watched any of the footage of players and devs hamming it up on voice chat while playing Sea of Thieves, you’ve probably gotten the impression that voice comms are going to be pretty important in the game, which is true. But it’s not the only type of communication the Rare devs have planned.

As a recent video explains, the devs are working on a non-verbal communication system for folks who can’t or don’t want to join the melee on voice comms.

The basic in-progress demo is currently a scrollable radial menu of phrases that change based on the context of what’s going on when and where the player is. For example,Read more

You don't have to explore the shared world with others if you don't want to

Until now, whenever Sea of Thieves has been shown off, we've only seen it in action with crews of co-op players numbering at least four. While that is the core experience that Rare has designed the game around, they've been incorporating player feedback and have revealed smaller vessels that players can use to sail the game's shared world either on their own or with one other player.
The feature was revealed in the latest episode of Inn-Side Story, the on-going video series in which Rare's developers talk about some of the behind-the-scenes decision making with the game. Check it out:
[YT]sy_15tZ01Fs[/YT]

One of Rare's most prominent design pillars with the game is removing as many barriers to entry as possible, which they emphasize in the video. Playing the game without a microphone, and now even with other people is a possibility as the developers try to account for every possible contingency. Another part of this strategy is how they've handled the technical side of things in wanting the game to be Crossplay compatible. Another contingency that Rare is preparing for is the full range of PC specs that gamers have at their disposal.
The point is that Rare wants as many different people to play Sea of Thieves as possible, and by removing boundaries such pathways for player bullying and platform, they appear to be succeeding. Sea of Thieves releases sometime in 2018 for Xbox One and PC.

Sea of Thieves boards small boats and finds them seaworthy for soloers and duoers

While Sea of Thieves’ standard pirate vessels require a crew of four, Rare acknowledged that some players were going to ask for boats that could be manned by one or two for that solo or duo experience.

Enter the “efficient” and “vulnerable” small ship.

“When we were making the small ship, we wanted to make it feel significantly different to the large ship,” said Senior Designer Andrew Preston. “We started to looking at how many degrees the ship rotates.Read more

Sea of Thieves is getting a comic book treatment

December 19, 2017 15 comments

Every pirate needs some good reading material for those long ocean voyages, assuming that they can read. And now, for the literate and illiterate alike, a Sea of Thieves comic book series is coming for the discriminating adventurers.

The comic series is being written by Jeremy Whitley and drawn by Rhoald Marcellius and will arrive in stores and online during the game’s launch month of March 2018. It shouldn’t be confused with the game’s official art book, which is being handled by Dark Horse Comics.

Titan Comics says that the comic will be appropriate for all ages: “In Titan Comics’ brand-new series, follow two competing crews of pirates, bound by a shared past and a single destiny, as they sail the Sea of Thieves in a race to track down an ancient treasure. Along the way they’ll deal with undead hordes, devious traps and their own bitter rivalries, but which crew will emerge victorious and ultimately claim the legendary loot?”Read more

As I had pre ordered it, I gave it another shot.

First thing was when I would propose a mission and would acquire a map it would not show in my inventory. After a few log outs and in it started working.

Again I did not find anything special about this game. It reminds me of WOW on water. The water looks amazing especially in a storm. Rest of the game not so much. It got pretty boring and repetitive. I know MS was looking for a giant hit but I just do not see (sea) it. I was also disappointed that you need to pick a randomly generated avatar instead of getting to customize one yourself.

I played for hours and did not see one other person.

I know it sounds like I have a hate on for the game. I don't. I wanted to like it. It's just disappointing.

At least I have monster hunter. Finally beat Nergigante after 5 days of trying, and 5 days of the wife scowling.
