7.5 I liked it a lot. But hope to get a dark Black Manta focused sequel. With less cheese.

I thought it was really enjoyable, I had fun with it and felt everyone overall did a good job. I am glad that the GP now has more of an opportunity to see what Aquaman can do than just be a joke/meme and worthless out of water. Aquaman when done right is a great superhero and I’m glad the film is doing well. 8/10

I had a blast with this film, and its a great example of what we get when a studio gets talented directors that understand the characters and let them do what they want. James wan nailed it

8/10

That was - amazing.

James Wan definitely cemented himself as one of the greatest modern day mainstream directors. Between nailing horror and channeling Peter Jackson, Spielberg, and old school Lucas - he’s definitely talented and versatile.

I can see them bringing him on to the next Star Wars. This, Force Awakens, and Guardians 1 reminded me of what seeing Star Wars for the first time must have felt like.

I have died.

And then I have risen to write my thoughts :lmao:

I am sure you are all dying to know what I think (/s) so let me kill the suspense here - this is now my favorite DC movie and it has dethroned WW. As I sat down I was trying to lower my expectations to "just stay alive and look at Jason, whatever happens this is bound to be better than Wolves which you watched for him twice". I was keeping in mind the complaints about score, dialogue, runtime, plot, Pitbull song and jokes. So allow me to tackle those first.
200.gif

The score is fantastic. It has hints of Tron/Blade Runner score and it compliments the visuals in such a brilliant way. I have been listening to it all week long and it is unique, catchy and epic. Arthur and Manta have memorable themes, Mera has a very cool motif and Atlantis theme is GORGEOUS. One of my favorite parts of the score is the latter part of "Arthur" and it is so well used in the moment when they are escaping from Ring of Fire. As for selection of songs - Greta van Fleet! Sigur Ros! Roy Orbison! Depeche Mode!

The dialogue wasn't bad at all - it was pretty standard for CBM and considering the wacky premise it wasn't jarring. I mean it's a film about superhero who talks to the fish people really shouldn't be expecting some incredible monologues or something. I wasn't cringing at any lines and I was laughing so hard whenever Jason was swearing especially when the fight was about to start and he just went "****" :lmao:

The runtime/Plot - Honestly if anything the movie was too short lol The world-building was fantastic - they introduced you to this vast new world yet you never felt lost AND at the same time you wanted to know more about Atlantis, the customs there, the different kingdoms, the history. They set up everything so well here with hints to Atlantis' ways and rituals and history and all there is left to do now in future movies is to explore this wonderful new world. It is also amazing how much the film manages to cover - we travel to so many different locations and we get good introduction to so many characters. I have to say Wan did a lovely job with Orm. If Orm wasn't so extra and didn't stab Fisherman king it would be really hard to root against him. But you feel for him and you understand his feelings towards Arthur because he lost his mom as a kid. And in the end you really see him loving his mom and him and Arthur somewhat reaching an understanding. That was a very well developed character. Black Manta was so well set up and is a very promising villain for the sequel. And what is up with the complaint the film is 'tonally inconsistent'? Where? This take is bad and the critics should feel bad.

Pitbull song - that was one of the biggest laughs in my screening. That was such a humorous scene with Arthur and Mera getting out of the sea in their outfits and it's a cover of Africa playing in the background! And come on, that song is damn catchy :funny:

Jokes - I thought the humor was great - Jason is such a funny guy and he has great timing and his funny moments got the biggest reactions from the crowd. His banter with Mera was adorable. I was also laughing so hard at Dolph Lundgren throwing that "b****, please" look at everyone. I only wish the camera focused longer on the cards we saw before the fight in Ring of Fire listing only pros for Orm and cons for Arthur, that was so funny but I only managed to see "half--breed" and "drunk" for Arthur lol The film also had so many cute moments - Nicole and the dog in the beginning, the selfie montage and that brilliant montage in Sicily which did so many things - that adorable 'fish out of water' moment with Mera, Mera warming up to humans and Arthur falling for her. And I refuse to believe James Wan did "conversation interrupted by explosion" thing THREE times accidentally. It was hilarious :lmao:

Random thoughts:
- So I sit down, chillax and the first moment is a jump scare. Dammit, James.
- I love that the film opened and ended with Atlanna and Thomas. Their story was beautiful
- Nicole Kidman was beyond adorable in those early scenes and her fight scene was tremendous. Also it's so clear that Kidman is the top tier actress - that look on her face right before she starts fighting. You can tell she will do ANYTHING to protect those she loves
- This is me when Jason started to lift the submarine:
pAOO6ZO.gif

- And this is me when Jason landed inside the submarine, did a hair flip, turned around and said THAT iconique line:
bd155Di.gif

- I started smiling then and I never stopped.
- Jason straight up annihilating those pirates was incredible
- I was sooooo envious of that Russian dude he was carrying out of there
- The tsunami scene and Mera's powers were awesome. Also it was so funny when she said that long name to introduce herself and then she takes mercy on poor him and goes "you may call me Mera"
- The montage of Arthur/Mera and young Arthur/Vulko was so well done
- The entrance to Atlantis was one of the best moments in the movie. There was so much happening in those shots and we got so much info from Mera about how things work there. Jason did such a wonderful job with that amazed look on his face and the score was just <3
- He was shirtless and in chains. This is PG-13? This is filthy bondage erotica.
- The whole Ring of Fire scene was amazing including Mera's going in to save Arthur. Poor baby with his broken Quindent :(
- The escape scene was one of my favorite bits and Jason was hilarious screaming like a little girl
- Amber was the weak link in the cast and it was especially noticeable in the scene on the plane where Mera was talking about duty. She was a fun character but you could tell with her she was acting, which wasn't the case for anyone else here
- The goat's double take was hilarious even though we saw it in the trailers
- He shouted the F word when he landed didn't he? :D
- Vulko is Jim trying to secretly screw over Orm and Orm is Dwight

- The banter on the desert was so much fun. This was like the fifth time the pollution was mentioned but I guess this movie doesn't have 'eco message', right, random dumb critic person?

- Arthur and Mera discovering that thingy/map was full of lovely moments between them especially when he grabbed her hand awww
- And then she wiped her hand on her pants?! MERA, GURL, WHAT?!
- Eating roses <3 Arthur's heart eyes <3 Mera falling and him grabbing her <3
- The fight in Sicily was amazing! The long takes, the camera moving from Arhur and Mera, Mera wasting that wine (come on!)
- That dude was under that big rock and Arthur lifted it and that dude just walked it off lol
- When that guy dove into a toilet I could actually sense @Consona soul, having left his body when he saw it, circle the Earth and vow revenge
- Never take jewelry from your shady fiancee
- That scene with Arthur and his wounds covered in seaweed has gotta be a reference to Game of Thrones and Khal Drogo's wounds when that witch killed him and deprived us of him
- Mera just randomly playing that flute cracked me up
- The Trench! That was such an impressive sequence. It was so well done, it looked beautiful and Wan even smuggled some gory stuff in there. When my mother watches it with me next week she is definitely covering her eyes during this
- Where those freaking dinosaurs running around on that island?! For a second I was worried Chris Pratt is gonna ride in on a motorcycle
- The entire cinema gasped when Nicole Kidman reappeared so I'm gonna go ahead and say this was clearly surprising for people
- What was that outfit with wings? She killed one of those dinosaurs and made an outfit? Maybe that critic is all for fictional creatures rights and that's why he claims there was no 'eco' message
- That scene where her and Arthur are reunited was beautifully acted by Jason and Nicole. I teared up. Doing any eye make up today was a huge mistake, first the sweat from Jason then the feels from this.
- I liked that they explained how and why Atlanna was stuck there. We know she is powerful so it makes sense she managed to escape the trench and because of that 'portal is sealed' explanation we know why she didn't return
- When you know Julie Andrews is voicing that thing that scene is hysterical. Jason essentially tells her to go screw herself lol
- "The one true King!" - dude Nicole was acting her beautiful behind off in this movie. I love that she gave this the same commitment she would to some big Oscar bait
- Up until now the most spectacular thing I've seen was Gandalf riding into the Helm's Deep but that scene where Arthur stands on Julie Andrews' head and commands the creatures tops that. The way the camera focuses on him and then we see the wide shot of all the creatures is just incredible
- That kiss! <3
- so how many dudes wanted to be that orca Amber was riding? That thing sure looked happy
- Dolph being so super chill about that "half-breed is your King" was so hilarious, his whole attitude was like Atlantis is populated by trash so no wonder this is their King :lmao:
- The final fight between Orm and Arthur was spectacular and it looked so beautiful
- *Jason spins that Trident* *Willem Dafoe smiles creepily* *Orm's trident is shattered* me:
eSgvhiu.gif

- *Arthur and Orm fighting to death* *the battle is happening* *Atlanna having her priorities straight, and only showing up after finding a crown and a sparkly poncho*:
giphy.gif

- Arthur kissing Mera's forehead <3
- Thomas and Atlanna's reunion made me cry
- THAT LAST SHOT
- the end credits and the song were gorgeous!
- loved that mid-credits scene. I understand Manta but if he hurts boo....

I cannot wait to watch it over and over again

Ahhh, so glad you enjoyed it so much. It’s funny reading your review and there were parts of the film where I was thinking how you’d be reacting, and most of it was accurate. :D

I just watched it again and this movie is so much fun. Admittedly, this time i watched it with a slightly different mindset and that was one trying to see where the critics are coming from because i was so high from my first showing that I really couldnt see any egregous faults with the movie. I wanted understand where this sinking tomato score is coming from.

I think watching it with a more neutral mindset, I can see the faults now and more imprtantly can see why they would bother some people. Some of the dialogue is a little cringy and the plot is wacky and contrived in some places. But I maintain that these things by no means derail the film in my book because there is just so much stimulus and feel good vibes in every frame that I feel you just have to kick back and enjoy it. My reaction this time was more tempered than my first viewing but I still believe this is a rock solid 8/10 movie.

Cliche ridden, but it's lively and the performers elevate the proceedings and Wan does deliver on a slam bam action spectacle with just enough dramatic weight to keep you engaged with the characters and story. An enjoyable time watching a solid movie that does have the issue of of being a bit too light at times but still managed to throw in a wee bit of complexity on an issue or two which was welcomed on my part, though I wish there was more. If I had to say which had more meaty dramatics and resonance between the two, I would say Wonder Woman and Man Of Steel beat it by a country mile in that department. This is formulaic as hell. However... The formula is running on all cylinders and my worst fears, that it would be too reliant on four quadrant styled humor was not realized as they did not go overboard with "wink-wink" type jokes or word play and simply let Aquaman and his world speak for themselves.

Overall the film doesn't even attempt to reach any grand highs but it just works. This is apparent across all the non-production design/SFX/action aspects of the film. Take Patrick Wilson as Orm. He's not going to dethrone (no pun) Tom Hiddleston as the brother villain of the hero du jour. But... What he does in the film is more than good enough and it works. The arc Arthur has doesn't go too deep under the hood or ask any big questions or make any grand statements... But it works. He comes across well as the reluctant hero with a chip on his shoulder who none the less will do what must be done for the greater good and in doing so opens himself up to greater connections and responsibilities. We've seen it all before and they don't break much new ground. Momoa is both affable in the part but his issues are given enough weight to have some dramatic heft in the movie. Even people that aren't particularly great in their performances aren't also egregiously bad either. Amber Heard's Mera is a touch undercooked but it still works. Lungdren's undersea king looks great but his line readings (as always) are off and yet... That works out fine too.

What affected me most as a long time fan of the character that knew of the potential in adapting him to the big screen if that the feel started off immediately with the cliche's which I found off putting but as the runtime went on I found myself getting more and more into it so that by the time the final act gets going, starting with the hero finally embracing his destiny, yadda-yadda, and ending with the giant big budget blockbuster action scene, I was happy as a... uh... clam, and enjoying the hell out of seeing Aquaman and his world so fleshed out and pleasingly presented. Really, if you are a fan of Aquaman and you have known how much more he is than the public perception formed by Family Guy or Superfriends the last act of this film gives you everything you want. And the movie gives you the viewer, a great tour of this fantasy world withing the DCEU, and in spades. This isn't like say the Green Lantern film or the first Thor movie where you find the "Earth" stuff less engaging and interesting than the trips to Asgard or Oa. No, Wan centers a lot of the film in the undersea fantasy realm and keeps it lively and engaging. Wan deserves particular kudos for delivering a very specific and probably expensive type of 360 degree action, both on dry land and in the water. Truly this has some fantastic super hero action and in spite of the talk of it being too "CGI" I thought the effects all worked given the setting and were mostly blended well enough for me to not be taken out of the film.

Again, the formulaic nature of the movie may detract for some viewers and I can understand that. I mean, as fine as the score was, it LITERALLY uses "DUN-DUN-DUHH!" throughout the film. But maybe, I don't know... Maybe Wan was embracing the cliches so tightly in a hope to actually transcend them? If so... It kinda worked. Still if that aspect is a problem I don't think those in the audience that see that as a deficiency is going to be moved by that POV. This was quite a "safe" film, but then... I think it's obvious that as compared to shows on Streaming, Cable and TV that movie audiences aren't looking for too much complexity in big budget films these days, for good or ill. Another issue I had was that I think that for myself Yaya Mateen as Manta was good enough and I liked the twist to the story of how he becomes Aquaman's nemesis in that it was NOT as cliched and overdone a trope as I was expecting, BUT... I feel, despite what's implied in a post credit scene, that he took a back seat too much in compared to Ocean Master and wished there was more of him in the movie. Like so many facets of the film, for me, that would have added more, again no pun, depth to the overall film. Another few things going into the negative pile for me was that they young actors that played Arthur in flashbacks just never once convinced me that they were the same person only younger. On every level they had at best a surface physical similarity but in terms of line reading, and presence, I just never bought it.

End of the day though I think the good in general far outweighs anything subpar or poor in the film. I for sure wouldn't mind going back to this world for another adventure with Atlantis' warrior king even if it again, was a bit of a shallow exercise in fantasy spectacle. For this long time fan of Aquaman the best way to sum up the film is... "Hail to the King!"

Just came back from this and LOVED it. What an awesomely FUN movie that didn't take itself too seriously and was also one of the most creative and imaginative movies that I've seen in a LONG time. All of the stuff that James Wan came up with and put on screen was just plain glorious. From the eye-popping colors, to the amazing amount of sea life, to Atlantis itself, to all of the characters and their costumes—in particular Black Manta and Orm. I also really liked both the musical score and the sound effects, and appreciated the small sonic touches that Wan added to remind us that the characters were speaking underwater.

Most of the actors did great in their roles. Particularly loved Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Patrick Wilson as Orm, Nicole Kidman as the Queen, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta. I especially appreciated that James Wan actually allowed most of the characters to say their own monikers, with Momoa calling himself Aquaman, Wilson calling himself Ocean Master, and Abdul-Mateen II calling himself Black Manta. Amber Heard was fine as Mera and had some standout action scenes as well, but as a straight guy, I have to admit that her near-constant display of cleavage had me...let's say distracted. ;)

Both Orm and Black Manta were total badasses, and I especially liked that
we got to see both of them in their full comic-book accurate costumes and that neither of them were killed off. Can't wait to see either or both of them again in the inevitable sequel!

Aquaman is now my new favorite modern live-action DC movie, beating out everything else that's been released since Batman Begins (including Man of Steel and Wonder Woman, which I also liked). It was one of the most unique, ambitious, and visually beautiful CBMs that I've seen in a long time and I hope that WB/DC can keep the momentum going!

I've been getting tired of the formulaic movies from Marvel, as well-done as they usually are, and Aquaman was the perfect shot of something different from WB/DC. I really hope that WB/DC keeps making movies where the director is allowed to be creative and unique, because that's exactly what's going to differentiate WB/DC from Marvel going forward, IMO. Heck, James Wan needs to come back not just for a sequel but for any other DC movies too!

Btw the 3D on this movie was done amazingly well. HIGHLY recommend seeing it in 3D. On the biggest screen possible, with the best sound system possible.

I voted 9 because I went to go see it in 3D last night and I was wowed the whole way through

Aquaman hands down my favorite film out of the 6 films now in the DCEU

Same here. WW dragged a bit here and there and of course the 3rd act can't touch this one. Yes, WW had No Man's Land but I teared up twice during Aquaman during Atlanna's scenes

- *Arthur and Orm fighting to death* *the battle is happening* *Atlanna having her priorities straight, and only showing up after finding a crown and a sparkly poncho*:

- Arthur kissing Mera's forehead <3
- Thomas and Atlanna's reunion made me cry
- THAT LAST SHOT
- the end credits and the song were gorgeous!
- loved that mid-credits scene. I understand Manta but if he hurts boo....

I cannot wait to watch it over and over again
I wish all critic reviews were this fun and passionate. They take it soooooooooooo seriously. Sometimes it can be risky to have such high expectations going in so I'm glad you enjoyed it!

She was so powerful I almost wonder why she didn't just kick Orm's ass (which she could clearly do) and become Ocean Master herself lol.

I know I did and it is probably better if you watch the film in 3D IMAX which is what I did

It was. . . okay. A 7/10 for me. Visuals were amazing tho, especially that trench sequence. But the humor was hit or miss for me. The action was okay to great. Hated the pacing tho.

I mean Aquaman's pacing was okay but surely a lot better than the other films in the Universe

After having a few days to gather my thoughts I am giving this a 7.5. I agree with others the humour was hit or miss and I thought the same about the score. Great visuals and CGI but story was too predictable at times.

It's an origin film from a really known superheroe, of course it's gotta be predictable

Can someone tell me the title of one superhero movie that isn't predictable?
