Anthony Mackie and Evangeline Lilly Join Real Steel

Source: Variety
May 12, 2010

Anthony Mackie and Evangeline Lilly ("Lost"), who both had roles in The Hurt Locker, are joining Hugh Jackman in the Shawn Levy-directed Real Steel at DreamWorks Pictures.

Jackman will play an ex-fighter who becomes a promoter when human boxing is outlawed for being too violent. The new gladiators are 2,000-pound robots with human qualities. The ex-fighter's access to sub-standard robot parts hampers his hopes for glory in Robot Boxing, until he discovers a discarded robot that always seems to win. The ex-fighter has also discovered he's the father of a 13-year old son (Dakota Goyo), and they bond as the robot brawls its way toward the top.

Mackie will play a boxing promoter and Lilly will portray a friend of Jackman's character.

The film is based on a short story by Richard Matheson that was adapted into an original "Twilight Zone" episode that starred Lee Marvin.

Don Murphy, Susan Montford and Levy are producing. Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke, Steve Starkey, Mary McLaglen and Josh McLaglen are executive producing.

First Image From Real Steel

Source: USA Today
June 15, 2010

The first look at the world of Real Steel has appeared online courtesy of USA Today.

The image, shown below, depicts Hugh Jackman's character instructing a Samurai-inspired robot called "Noisy Boy." Though many of the robots in the film will be depicted with motion-capture technology, the article explains that 19 animatronic doubles were created as well and will be used in filming, which started today.

Real Steel is set for release on November 18, 2011.

I gotta say I'm really intrigued by this. Of course it's kinda the same down and out underdog story like Rocky but sounds like it'll be really sweet. I expect Hugh to bring a needed humanity to his character. Considered me interested and somewhat excited.

this sounds awesome...

by the looks of it its clearly an adaptation of that twilight zone episode with the robot boxers... and the human engineer is forced to pretend to be a robot and win.

with speilberg and zemeckis.. i could forget about who's directing.

im interested... definatly original

who really belives that they will use a lot of animatronic robots for fighting? come on.

It's standard to have an double of the CG creations on set as reference material and to give the cast and crew an idea of how things will look like.

Anyway going back to the topic. When i first saw the picture at Hitfix i thought that it was camera setup next to Jackman , not a robot :wow:
Also thank god that that Twilight actor isn't near this movie. I would've instantly lost interest if he was cast as the male lead.

The animatronics may be used when one of the humans has to interact with the fighters or whatever. Maybe while working on one, or one gets damaged in the ring and they go up to it and maybe try and coax it back up or whatever.

Hhhhhhmmmm sounds intriguing, I like the sound of this and its something that hasnt been done before in movies.

Hehe, I must say this sounds pretty cool in a way. I'll keep an eye out for this one.

It's got Hugh Jackman, so of course I'm seeing it. :oldrazz:

It does sound like it could be a really fun movie, as long it's done right. I read an interview with Shawn Levy where he was saying he didn't want it to be in 3D because he wanted it to be about the story instead. I nearly wanted to hug him for that.

why is he then making a big budget movie where robots are fighting?

shouldnt he writte a book? there it can be only about the story.

Must you treat every movie like some sort of grand conspiracy?

According to several articles I've read about the movie (not to mention a script review as well), it's very much a father/son story as well as a "robots are fighting" story. You can do both, you know. It's called giving the story some heart. It's certainly been done before.

Because it is possible to combine both, not everyone is Michael Bay.

why are you saying this to me? i know that it can be done. i am not writting that 3D shouldnt be used because then the is not about the story.

That isn't what you said when you quoted danoyse though.

i was being sarcastic. yes 3D is popular right now and its used for money shots.

but saying that 3D should not be used because you are making a movie with a story is wrong.

:hehe: I actually like myself a spot of Bayhem in moderation but the idea his way is the only way for a big SFX blockbuster is wide of the mark.

Me too, but I wanted someone to punch him in the face after Transformers 2. Maybe they can send over one of the Real Steel robots once they're done filming. :oldrazz:

EXCLUSIVE: 'Real Steel' Director Shawn Levy Says No To 3-D, Cites 'Rocky' And 'Paper Moon' As Influences

Shawn Levy's been hitting big over the past few years, what with the success of his two "Night at the Museum" movies and now, tomorrow's "Date Night," starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell. He hasn't always done straight comedies, but most of his work to this point has had a humorous bent. That's going to change with "Real Steel," a robot boxing movie that promises to deliver more than just boxing robots. MTV's Josh Horowitz spoke to Levy on the "Date Night" record carpet earlier this week, and it's clear that the director is excited about doing something a little different with this project.

"That's a kickass movie. My first non-comedy, starring Hugh Jackman," he said. I got a call from Steven Spielberg and he said 'Hey, there's this Richard Matheson short story, I've been developing it for 8, 9 years.'" The call led to a meeting, and the veteran filmmaker was sold on Levy's pitch.

"I... had a very specific take on the material that was, yes about the robots and all that, but really [also] a kind of poignant relationship drama, which is something I've been looking to do," Levy explained. "Kind of big-hearted and rousing. I haven't seen a sports movie in a long time that really had me rooting and up out of my seat."

"Robot boxing movie." That's the easy high-concept pitch. Levy sees "Real Steel" as something more: part sports movie, part relationship drama, part action flick. It leads one to wonder where his influences lie.

"It's a weird amalgam," he said. "What it's not is 'Transformers' or 'Terminator.' There's definitely shades of that 'Rocky' paradigm. There's shades of 'Paper Moon,' in that it is a father-child road movie. And it's really kind of a redemption movie. It's got some humor, but it's definitely not a comedy. It's got a lot of action, really kind of muscular action, and a lot of... heart."

Jackman has already been cast in the lead adult role while Dakota Goyo plays his son Max. The child actor has built up a fair amount of television experience, but he'll really have an opportunity to put himself out there in "Steel." Casting for the rest of the principals started earlier this week; Levy told Josh that there are "15 other adult roles" to be filled.

The million dollar question these days is 3-D. Will your movie be in 3-D and will it be the real deal or a post-production conversion? The latter question won't apply for "Real Steel" since the hot format-of-the-moment won't be used. Part of it stems from scheduling; the movie will hit theaters close to several other 3-D releases. For Levy though, it's more than just that.

"I don't think it's gonna be [in 3-D]," he said. "In our minds, we don't want it to be just 'the robot movie.' Frankly, to make it 3-D would immediately signify, 'oh it's that boxing robot movie.'" Levy is most interested in "really making sure we serve this as a kind of intimate relationship movie."

Have you read the Matheson short story? Are you excited for this movie?

So to recap:

The main reason the movie will not be in 3D is because there are other 3D movies coming out at the same time.

Levy has basically said that he doesn't want to make 3D to be the star of the film. That does not mean he thinks 3D movies have no story.

So far though 3D has been used to sell movies deemed light on storytelling qualities, hence why Levy made that comment IMO.

:funny: That was perhaps the noisiest, most brain dead film I've ever sat through, he needs to do another movie in the mould of The Rock.

If all of his movies were like The Rock, he'd be a genius. That was a great film.

Sounds great, i'll never complaint about someone putting heart and emotion into a movie as at the end of the day this is what makes us resonate with the characters, all the great movies have heart and emotion in them.
