Which graphic novel would be good to start off with for a person who's kinda new with the X-Men in the comics? Also another question, which comic book issues or graphic novels deal with Magneto's past, origin, and his reasons for his beliefs of mutant supremacy?

I would recommend Joss Whedon and Cassday's Astonishing X-Men.

Astonishing X-Men vol. 1: Gifted
Astonishing X-Men vol. 2: Dangerous
Astonishing X-Men vol. 3: Torn
Astonishing X-Men vol. 4: Unstoppable

As for Magneto, maybe you can wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magneto_(comics)
and track the issues under Footnotes.

:)

There's only ONE X-Men graphic novel, it's called God Loves man Kills, there is another one called "New Mutants" that deals with the origin of the New Mutants. What you might have meant was "What good trade paperbacks can I read?"

Incidentally, that one graphic novel is a great Magento/X-Men story and it was the basis for the X2: X-Men United movie

God Loves, Man Kills
The Dark Pheonix Saga
X-Men: Onslaught
Days of Future Past
Astonishing X-Men
Massiah Complex
Age of Apocolypse
The entire Morrison run of New X-Men

These are some off the top of my head.

Read the Morrison run of New X-Men before reading Astonishing X-Men, by the way. Also, make sure it's not "New X-Men: Academy X" or "New X-Men: Childhood's End." Those are entirely different books about the students. You want one simply titled "New X-Men." Just... just look for Grant Morrison's name on the cover.

Go for the Essentials collections. Volumes 1-5 will get you caught up on most of the major characters, plotlines, and events in the X-men's history.

Aviod New X Men like the plague

Hey! New X-Men: Academy X was pretty good. Stop jading the poor boy.

*pats Sharky's head* Start with X-Treme X-Men.

You trying to put him off X-men completely?

Protip: Don't read anything released after 1991! It's all crap! Except AoA! But not the revisit!

I'm trying to inaugerate him into the grand tradition of Marvel...

Good ideas that turn to **** pretty quickly.

The X-Men comics that have bought recently are reprints of X-Men #1 and Giant Size X-Men #1. I also bought the X-Men #1, the one with Magneto on it by Jim Lee. I got this for free from someone who was giving away their comics, it was all the issues of this stroyline called ShatterShot which ran through the X-Men and X-Factor titles. Was this storyline any good or infamously bad because I'm only a first time X-Men fan. When I go to Comic Con, I'll hunt down God Loves, Man Kills and any issues that deal with Magneto's past. Is Ulitmate X-Men any good? Any good issues that involve the Sentinals besides Days of Future Past?
It's just because I want get into what the heart of X-Men is about which is racism, bigotry and prejudice. I'll get to the epic scifi storylines like The Dark Phoniex Saga, Age of Apocolypse, and Days of Future Past later.

Stay away from anything that has the word "Ultimate" in the title. That universe is about to implode anyways.

Ultimate, Astonishing, Uncanny...which is the best X-Men series?

I'm bumping this thread b/c i'm new to the x-men comics so feel free to list some of the best tpb's...especially to start with. Wouldn't want to start by reading the ones that go deep into the lore and expect you to know every character!

Which were released in 3 convenient volumes a year or 2 ago! Can't go wrong there...

......I'd also like to add God Loves-Man Kills, Mutant Massacre, Fall of the Mutants, Inferno, X-Cutioner's Song, Fatal Attractions, and the Phalanx Covenant (I thinks its been collected under The Origin Of Generation X?)...

Is New X-Men the one with Frank Quitely's art..?

Thanks for the suggestions Hellion!

it depends who you ask. ive enjoyed Uncanny because it's spearheads the direction of the franchise and the changes to the mutant community, but others argue that the book is no longer about a TEAM. Astonishing is a continuity-free brand for X-Men for people who don't know or care about 40yrs of X-Men history. it started as a normal ongoing series in continuity (beautifully done by Joss Whedon and John Cassady), but is now just a mini series. Ultimate is a world all its own, rebooted after the destruction of the Ultimate X-Men in Ultimatum.

a new "X-Men" #1 came out last month (with #2 out today) so thats probably the best place for new people to get on board. there's also X-Men Legacy (the former "X-Men" from the 90s) that focuses on Rogue and her relationship with all the young mutants, but it relies heavily on continuity.

i say Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men is the best take on the X-Men in the past 10 yrs. i recommend it to all newcomers. i didnt like Morrison's New X-Men, but if you decided to read it, know that it's before Whedon's Astonishing.

after that to catch up on the X-Men all you probably need is:
Messiah Complex
Utopia
Nation X
Second Coming

so i did what people in here suggested and got new x-men volumes 1-3 and the joss whedon omnibus of astonishing. i'm almost done volume 1 of new x-men and so far, whats the deal with cyclops? wolverine and he seem to have switched places or something, with wolvy saying something about scott always being able to cry on his shoulder or something. and then cyke is a dick to jean and then you get to the point of "did you sleep with emma?" and he says "no, she kept me up all night."

otherwise its pretty good. but he's just pissing me off. do people like cyclops like that?

before Morrison's run started Cyclops merged with Apocalypse and was presumed dead after Cable detroyed the hybrid "Cyclopalypse". Jean found that he was still "alive" and with Cables help was able to resurrect him, but the transormation changed him, made him darker. on top of that Jean was exploring the highest reaches of her powers without fear of the Phoenix and this unsettled him, causing him to confide in Emma, and you know the rest.

most long time fans can probably agree that Cyclops is probably one of the *****iest guys when it comes to relationships (go back and read what happened with Madelyn Pryor some time), and even though i hate what Morrison did with him, it led to Whedon making him a really interesting character not defined by his relationships.
