I've got many friends who are interested in graphic novels, but don't know where to start with regards to the X-men because it isn't so easy to just say 'read this graphic novel' - there's often a series or continuity to have to take into consideration, which dissaudes new readers.

Which graphic novel would you direct a first time X-men reader to? and why?

Go with squeeks idea...

I also suggest buying the three new volumes of the Grant Morrison Run of New X-men in 3 Ultimate Collections...

there a good read...

Pick up some of the Essentials volumes. Or you can just find a story that interest you, and backtrack. No harm in that. "God Loves, Man Kills" is a good contained story that doesn't require you to know too much history.

The Marvel Essentials is a great way to go. I bought about 5 volumes starting with issue number 1 and then it just works it's way up. Also that disc squeek mentioned is awesome, I got that too

It really is great and sooo worth the money if all you want you to do is read the dang things and catch up. If I lost my collection and had to start all over again, I'd be buying the discs. I hope they come out with a Wolverine one. :)

The "40 years" DVDrom is GREAT, it really is, however just be aware that it collects every episode of the classic Uncanny X-Men up until when the disc was pressed - over 400 issues, however, there's not a single issue of the adjectiveless X-Men titled that arose in the early 90's. There's a disadvantage once you get to that point - in that much of the 90's had parallel conjoining stories within X-Men and Uncanny, so with this disc, you only get "half" the stories for that decade.

It isn't as bad as all that, most of the Uncanny stories do maintain their arcs and can be easily read. But yeah, there are a couple of "crossover" arcs that you will only get half the story. It is still well worth the money for a new collector and it beats having to pick up the issues one by one sometimes at a great expense. I do wish they'd get off their arses and put out the compainion discs of Abjectiveless and Wolverine as well.

I have the 40yr DVD also and I love it
