Regé-Jean Page to star in Paramount’s ‘The Saint’

Is he really that good of an actor? He didn't impress me in Bridgerton or on his SNL hosting gig.

Yeah, the Saint is one of those properties that never had much of a following. Did the Kilmer film do well? I remember liking it back in the day but I think it was a modest hit at best.

Anyway, I like Page a lot. But nabbing this role probably takes him out of the running for Bond (a role I think he’d be perfect for). But the upside to taking on a lesser known spy character is the opportunity to make it your own without endless comparisons to previous actors. The Kilmer film has its fans but it’s not anything like the Bond fandom. That said, this film’s success hinges a lot on Page’s appeal and whether they hire a competent director.

I like the Val Kilmer movie from the 90's, but it didn't do that well at that BO when it came out, so the fact that this is getting a reboot is definitely a head scratcher.

This is Paramount though who seem pretty desperate for franchises now, but who knows maybe it will be decent and the guy they got for this definitely has the look to pull off the role.

The Val Kilmer film came out at a different time when star power meant something, even though it's not like he was on a Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt level. The Saint was probably the last big film he headlined. And even then, it's not like it was some massive hit. What chance does a potential spy franchise have these days when Bond and Mission: Impossible are the only ones people really go for? Did they not learn anything from The Man from U.N.C.L.E.?

Yeah… the Kingsman movies have done pretty well and Melissa McCarthy’s “Spy” comedy was a hit but I don’t think there’s a lot of interest out there for this genre. That’s a shame IMO; I really enjoy a good spy thriller but like you said, Bond and MI kind of have cornered the market. Though to be fair, I don’t think a lack of overall interest in the genre was the only reason Man from UNCLE flopped. It was also just a lackluster movie; the humor fell pretty flat and there was hardly any action in it. Aside from a bunch of pretty people in great 60s costuming, it didn’t have much going for it. Hopefully The Saint will do better but I’m not holding my breath.

He is ok. He is like a young suave Pierce Brosnan so I could see Simon Templar a gentleman thief.

I've never seen Bridgerton but I have seen him in The Roots remake, For the People and Sylvie's Love.
