rest in peace J.D Salinger

Thank you Mr. Salinger, for writing the only book I enjoyed reading in high school
Yeah, I certainly enjoyed reading Catcher in the Rye the most out of anything else I read in my HS career. I read it during HS, but not for HS which might have helped. Reading it was just one of those moments where everything hit me at exactly the right moments, I was exactly where I had to be in life for that book to affect me the most.

I like Gatsby too, thankyouverymuch!

Being Canadian, I never had to read it in high school. I didn't read it until I was in my3rd year of university. It was one of the only books I've ever put down and just said "Wow". It was just so well-written.

That's how I felt about The Cat In The Hat Comes Back. Talk about a moving piece of literature!

I love the Great Gatsby too. The last couple of lines in that book always give me goosebumps.

How long was this guy off the grid for?

We did Catcher as a set text in school over here in Scotland as well. Like, we got to choose a book to do for part of our final exam, and Catcher was the book our teacher chose to study in detail with us all, and was the one she recommend us to do. I'm pretty sure I had already read it iirc, but although i loved the book and could talk about it all day, I didn't want to do it as I was not sure what ideas about the book were the teachers or my own by that point, lol, so didn't want to be sitting regurgitating the same thing a lot of other folk would have been for their final exam. I did Sylvia Plath's 'The Bell Jar' instead, a good old fashioned loony bin memoir.

Wow, I thought he was dead already...damn. I've been meaning to re-read Catcher in the Rye for a long time now, I guess now would be the time to honor him and do it. I never had to read that book in high school, but decided to seek it out and do it for a book report after seeing the movie...Conspiracy Theory...lol XD

Damn you north the border Scots and your good english literature education :cmad: ;)

Down in England we read Of Mice and Men, To Kill A Mocking Bird, Adrian Mole rubbish and a boatload of Shakespeare.

We did read The Monkey's Paw which was cool though.

Yeah, it was on the lists of texts you were allowed to do, or were 'highly recommened', ie if you didn't do those it was frowned upon by the exam board as they probably have not read Bukowski, lol.

We did Of Mice and Men too, and watched that tv adaptation with Malcovich, first time i saw him in anything.
Shakespeare wise we did Julius Ceasar.

Don't know what the Monkey's Paw is, will look it up, haven't read Adrain Mole, but i liked the tv series, lol.

But, Catcher was the one our teacher went into with us for the exam, looking at other folk's essays, writing out the discussed opinions on what it was about etc. She was a very cool and liberal teacher.
That's why I didn't want to do it, I think a lot of folk's essays would have turned out very similar, and I'm pretty sure I was the only one out of my class to get an A that year, maybe one other person, can't remember, so probably a good idea. Only one other person in my class did the Bell Jar.

For some reason, I never get to read Catcher in the Rye when I was in HS, so I haven't read this novel that seemed to impact many youngsters when they are growing up.

I would get ahold of it as soon as possible, as well as everything else said about it, it's impact on culture etc, it's very funny, you will probably have a great time reading it and tank through it pretty quickly. His other books are very good too.

I never really liked Catcher. Not sure why. Maybe it's because I think it's severely overrated. I don't fault other people for liking it, though.
