PREMISE:
Up-and-coming sports reporter (Hartnett) rescues a homeless man ("Champ", Jackson) only to discover that he is, in fact, a boxing legend believed to have passed away. What begins as an opportunity to resurrect Champ's story and escape the shadow of his father's success becomes a personal journey as the ambitious reporter reexamines his own life and his relationship with his family.
REVIEW:
I just came back from seeing the film and it was one of the best films of the summer and definitely the film to start off the upcoming 'award season' of films.
"I expected it to be something about boxers and couldn't have been more wrong. This intricately constructed story of fathers and sons has a genuine resonance and reason rare in movies."
- Boston Herald
I posted that quote because that is actually one of the misconceptions about the film and I admit going into the film I also thought it was going to be more of a boxing movie. But, the heart of the story and what pulls it along- as the Boston Herald stated is the powerful story of fathers and sons. So, if you're looking for a great movie to see with your father I highly recommend this film as well, not only does it have phenomenal performances by the cast but it also speaks about the importance of family and friends.
Samuel L. Jackson delivers a powerful performance as "the Champ" and I believe that he is a very strong contender for some kind of supporting role award, if not the academy awards- DEFINITELY the Golden Globes.
Josh Hartnet also pulls off an amazing performance as Erik. The movie revolves around his character and his relationship with his son, saying that he was great in the role is an understatement. The film required him to "give his all", notably one of the final scenes with his son, and he definitely came through.
The rest of the cast also deliver powerful performances.
4/4 stars.

So to sum it all up- if you want award season to kick off with a bang, this is definitely the film to see.
