Reviewing Marvel Comics a Week Early

A few. None are particularly memorable because I know next to nothing about most of the characters, and then I finally stopped buying them altogether. But the ones that centered on Namor, the Human Torch, Captain America, and Bucky have been fun.

The Namor one is the only one I found was worth buying but I highly recommend it.

Was that the one Marcos Martin did the art for? I think I missed it when it came out I'll check if my shop has one next time I'm there.

Okay, there's a bunch of cool comics I just finished reading that come out on Wednesday so I thought I'd do another round of this.

Now, someone in another thread apparently perceives this thread here as me somehow being arrogant. So, for the record, I acknowledge the fact that me being able to read these comics a little earlier than everyone else does not mean I'm better than anyone else, and, by posting my comments here I am in no way trying to insinuate that my opinion matters more than anyone else's.

Now that that's out of the way, I hope there are some of you find these little mini reviewy things helpful/interesting. If no one does then I'll stop writing them.

As usual I'll avoid giving details unless requested and just give a general idea (or I'll use spoilers as necessary).

Now, on with the show!

Wolverine Old Man Logan giant size
Was good and bad (but mostly bad). Good: This may be the first time I've ever seen Logan portrayed as the deadly brutal (yet stealthy) creature they always build him up to be.
Bad: The ish portrays the Hulk pretty pathetically, and I saw the ending coming probably 3 pages ahead.

Spidey 606
Okay, clearly I'm not a fan of the BND status quo so I won't go on about that. The art on this ish is pretty awesome, so there's a positive. On top of that they also did a good job of working black cat back in. Overall though whether you like the issue or not will depend pretty much entirely on whether you like the ol' "Peter is a loser and everything goes wrong for him" sctick or not. If you like it, you'll like the ish (and vice versa)
I'm of the opinion that that got overdone a couple decades back personally.

Avengers Initiative 28
This is a series that I never expect to enjoy, yet usually end up enjoying. I don't expect to enjoy it cuz I'm generally not a fan of any of the cast of characters, yet the issues are usually good. Weird.
Anyways, this ish had a number of good twists I could never have expected. If you've been reading the series at all you're pretty much sure to like this one. To summarize in one sentence, this ish answers the question: How do the resisting Initiative heroes fair when they face an army of Osborn-loyal "heroes"?

Dark Reign: The List: The X-Men
Focuses a LOT on Namor, which is not something I expected based on the title. If you're a fan of Namor it's a pretty decent ish, but you can also skip it if you want since it's completely self contained (if you don't read it you'll never know you missed a thing... so save money that way if you want to).
Overall a fairly decent one shot, though at the end
Norman Osborn has Namor right in front of him, with Sentry all set and ready to rip Namor apart (as he clearly should be able to), and yet Osborn tells Sentry to stand down for no apparent reason despite Namor being right there threatening him. Makes no sense at all.

Dark X-Men The Confession
Basically just a recap issue. If you've been reading X-Men related stories this is all pretty redundant. Don't recommend it unless you need to catch up on things.

Fantastic Four 571
Cool issue. I'm not usually a big fan of FF comics but this one was quite good. How does an army of Reed Richards solve everything? What could possibly be a threat to them? That's all I'll say.

Hercules 135
If you're a fan of roll-playing games, you'll especially like this issue. Good stuff. Interesting Cho-focused story.

Hulk 602
Wasn't a fan. The epic Skaar vs Juggs match I'd hope for... not so epic.

Ms Marvel 45
Man, they're making me think that they want to make this series unsalvageable.

New Avengers
A piece of tech that depowers the New and Dark avengers (even overriding Norman's armor and depowering the freakin sentry apparently) but not any of the villains? That's just ******ed.
If you can overlook that though it was an interesting issue.

Spider-Woman 1
U might've already read the motion version, either way, very strong first issue I thought.

Uncanny X-Men 515
Good ish. Land's art is at its best (which may be ripped off, i dunno). Fun opening action sequence despite me not having a clue who any of them are.
Good emotion as Cyclops wrestles to take care of the difficulties around them all. Also liked that they kept the touch of the Void in Emma (rather than ignoring it as I'd expected them to).

That's all for this week. Now back to the homework I should've been working on instead of writing this. :yay:

Beast leaves in that issue of Uncanny, right? Is his departure good? I'm thinking of maybe picking it up even though I don't read the series.

Nope, beast doesn't leave this issue. Not a bad read though if you want to pick it up anyway.

Okay, I really should be going to bed right now since there's church in the morning, but I just don't feel like it. So here's a batch of advanced reviews to hopefully help you decide if you want to buy the issues or not :)

Amazing Spider-Man 609
Okay, this is more of the clone saga stuff. We start with a fight with Kaine, and move on to Pete running around trying to track down Damon. I thought the issue was about a 6.5/10, with the really good art for the opening fight scene being the highest point.
The issue ends with a retro (cheesy) faux cliffhanger ending where Damon's threatening Pete's cousins and Harry and Pete isn't in his costume, with a caption on the bottom telling us that next issue is called "no more secrets". So we're supposed to actually think that Pete's really gonna reveal his secret identity to everyone in the room despite editorial just going through a crapstorm to make it hidden again. That's about as much drama as a few issues back when they had another retro faux cliffhanger with chameleon supposedly killing peter. Lame.

Invincible Iron Man 19
FANTASTIC issue. The art is outstanding as usual, and this issue's writing is excellent. Osborn and Stark finally come to a head, and we see the trio of girls as they try to escape from Avengers Tower. Dramatic conclusion to the issue that leaves me wanting to see next issue.

Dark Avengers 10
This issue was okay, but it's really more just a buildup to get this arc started off, so don't expect anything big.
This ish ends with the Dark Avengers running into what appears to be Molecule Man, Mephisto, and Enchantress. Also, Sentry dies yet again this issue without putting up a fight (this is starting to tick me off), and to top it off they don't even reference the fact that his face got shot off in the last issue. What the heck is Bendis doing with that character?!

Might Avengers 30
An interesting issue. It's nice to see a big gathering of Avengers again, am starting to wish that they'd get to the point already though with this unspoken of guy. Also, Pym is really getting put on a pedestal that's RIDICULOUSLY high at this point. For example,
In this issue Pym actually gets visited by Eternity! That's right, the embodiment of the universe takes some time out to chat with Hank Pym. And on top of that he tells Pym that he sees Pym as his champion, as the "scientist supreme" (yeah, that's a quote from eternity). I'm likin the series so far but this scene was just over the top

Thunderbolts 137
Okay, gotta get to bed so I'll be really really brief and just say that if you've liked the last couple issues you'll like this one. Really nice art with intriguing story and good twists. Though for this issue you have to be an Iron Fist fan to really appreciate it. 7.5/10

Actually, as an Iron Fist fan, this is exactly what I was wanting. Him being in it will make this my first Thunderbots purchase.

I've really been liking Thunderbolts, but Iron Fist was my favorite title (tied with Nova) so him taking a big part of this series excites the crap out of me.

I can't wait for this one, I'm glad it delivers. :woot:

Yeah, the Thunderbolts issue with Luke Cage and Iron First is a fun issue. It's like one of those old 80s team-up issues but done with modern art and better writing.

Just read Dark Wolverine 79
.
Thought it was very interesting, though it seems inconsistent in its portrayal of Daken's skill level though from other appearances. To be more specific...
Daken has been portrayed as taking on Wolverine and a bunch of highly skilled people but in this ish he seems to be legitimately taken down by some D-listers. It's used for good dramatic effect but still struck me as odd.

Wolverine Origins and Incredible Hulk both cover the same basic thing of Wolverine meeting Skaar, etc. Both were decent issues, but the problem is they both show them meeting for the first time and the stories aren't at all the same. Yet another of Marvel's unending continuity errors that the editors should have caught. Frustrating to see this kinda thing happen so often and them clearly have no intention of bothering to fix the problem.

Just got the next batch of advance Marvel comics today. Only read a few so far but here's some info.

First off: ALL PUNISHER FANS! Read Punisher #10 BEFORE you read Punisher the List. (I read it the other way around unforunately).

Punisher #10
About the same as the previous issues we've been going through. So pretty good. This issue does basically conclude the Punisher vs The Hood arc and tells us who exactly Punisher's new sidekick is. Worth a read I'd say.
Big Spoiler:
the sidekick (henry) is Jigsaw's illegitimate son who is trying to make up for his father being so evil

The List - Punisher
This issue is absolutely brutal! WAY WAY better and more than I was expecting. Essentially it comes down to Daken vs Punisher, with a conclusion that was really unexpected to me. Unfortunately the preview they follow it up with kinda ruins the effect, but I'd DEFINITELY recommend checking the issue out.
BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG BIG spoiler:
In this issue Punny takes the usual punishment but also dishing out a bunch as he flees from Daken and Hammer agents through sewers and more. But the injuries keep piling up (shot through leg, stabbed through abdomen), until Daken finally catches up to him on a rooftop.. and lops off Frank's forearm, then his head. his head goes over the side of the building as Daken slices his torso and legs in two smooth strokes!
It's the kind of end I thought Punisher should always get, where he faced a superior opponent (healing factor, etc) but just didn't manage to get as lucky as usual. Part of me kinda wishes it had been the Sentry in this issue, and that The Void had killed him. But that's just cuz I'm a huge Sentry/void fan.

The List - Wolverine
This issue, on the other hand, was a major letdown. We only ever see osborn as he's in his office and Wolverine is a secondary character to Noh-Varr. This definitely should have been called "The List - Noh-Varr". Essentially Osborn doesn't even go after Wolverine, he goes after some base wolverine knows about. Nohvarr tells wolverine about osborn's plan and team ups with him (for no apparent reason) and they proceed to foil said plan. Waste of money for sure.

FF
Conclusion to the "solve everything" arc. I think it tied it together nicely, though some pretty big stuff was left hanging. Hopefully they get back to this in the future. I'm definitely buying the tpb.

Whoa dude, whoa. I am DEFINITELY going to pick up The List: Punisher. Who wrote that?

Shoot, I just wrote a bunch of mini reviews then lost them all when my browser closed itself. Dangit. here we go again... but briefer...

So, Marvel's got a TON of issues coming out on Wednesday, here's more mini reviews and they're may be more to come if I have the time. Hope you find them useful :)

Secret Warriors 9

FANTASTIC ART!!! There's a massive fight scene with people fighting close quarter and it was amazing, plus the artist draws Ares like a beast! Recommend this issue (and this artist just went on my top ten list)

Ulimate Avengers 3

I don't like the illegitimate son thing, and a smarter richer brother for Tony Stark that just happened to never be mentioned is just ******ed, but I liked this issue anyways. ult nick fury is always awesome, plus this ish we get to see Cap versus the avengers, and I always loving see ult cap in action. And it looks like next ish we're gonna be seeing an ult Professor Hulk! :D

Dark Avengers: Ares #1

What happens when Osborn lets the god of war choose any soldiers he wants and train them any way he wants? You get brutal training and a really sweet issue. I enjoyed this way more than I thought I would. Try it out!

Ultimate Iron Wars #2

This issue we get to see for the first time Ultimate Modok and Ult Iron Man use his Repulsor (which is awesome btw)! Plus a pretty good hanging ending. A fun issue to me :)

New Avengers 58

This used to be my favorite series, 25 issues ago or so. This ish isn't too bad, some good moments and such, but it's all kinda ruined by the fact that they escape Ares by Cap shooting him in the jaw with a pistol... A PISTOL!!! He laughs off explosions, but apparently the armament of the average drug dealer can stop him. Way to go, Bendis.

Necrosha #1

if you like a lot of the lesser known mutant characters (new mutants, hellions, etc), you'll probably like this ish. it focuses mostly on the black queen and the aforementioned lesser known mutants. I don't like her or them really, so i didn't enjoy this ish at all... except seeing Pyro back alive, especially with Crane drawing Pyro's flames, but that was only one panel...

Ms Marvel 46

We get a conclusion to the 'war of the marvels' that really doesn't explain anything and, like the arc itself, is a waste of time. They really should've left carol danvers dead. Highly don't recommend wasting money on this.

Haven't done this in like 6 mths, but I'm in the mood, so here goes :)

All of these issues come out April 7th

As always, if there's anything specific you want to know about any of the issues just let me know :)

Cap America/Black Panther #1
This first issue is mediocre to me. The art is meh, and all this retrospective stuff is getting really overdone these days imo. This offers nothing really new to the idea. If you like seeing Panther acting as hands on national leader then check it out, or if you like the Fury/Cap or Panther/Cap interaction. In general I recommend against though.

Ultimate Comics X #2
This is a surprisingly non-stupid issue from Loeb! If you enjoyed the first ish, you'll like this one, and I recommend both. Enjoyable enough art with an interesting story that is well paced. This tells what's going on with mutants since ultimatum and the collapse of the x-men. I hate Loeb's work usually, so the fact I'm recommending this should say something.

Luke Cage #1
Ugh. I like the character, but couldn't enjoy this issue. I found the art terrible, and the story is nothing special. On top of it, Arcudi doesn't write Cage as well as Bendis does. I know people hate on Bendis, and I haven't liked NA in a while, but he writes a good Luke Cage. Plus Cage is put against hammerhead, and I hate hammerhead. He's like a dick tracey villain reject.
don't recommend.

Uncanny X-Men 523
This is a pretty good storyline, and one that is paying off a whole lot of buildup. Some good action, I'm intrigued by what will happen with Hope as well as Cable and her's dynamic. If you're looking for big story movement, it's not here. It's mostly just setup, but it's done well and with some good character interaction.
I recommend it.

Avengers Origin #1
I was really psyched about this series, but I found the first ish anyway very disappointing. Having the characters in old suits but in a modern day setting with the plot revolving around hacking just seems really off. The Wasp in her original outfit but in modern day just makes her seem all the more stupid. Ditto for Iron Man's old armor, which seems mighty retro in a modern day setting considering it's supposed to be higher than highest tech.
Also, the way the heroes are brought together just seems kind of lame/uninteresting to me. I hope this mini gets better, but I don't recommend this ish.

World War Hulks #1
Okay, multiple stories so multiple mini reviews. First is the A-Bomb story. I personally hate Rick Jones being a Hulk-like figure, combine that with the fact that his story is basically about how his wife wants to tag along all the time despite not having any superpowers and it leaves me really not liking it. Only thing I liked was the art, which I thought was excellent. Also, they make Ulik,
a Thor villain if I'm not mistaken, into a fool who is drunk and gets KO'ed in one punch by Jones.
Then comes the Glen Talbot story which really glorifies the character. I would like it except that frankly I don't give a crap about the character and
they make it into a bit forced seeming attempt to put Talbot into the Winter Soldier's background. Apparently he not only snapped the Soldier out of his programming temporarily, but he also gave the intel that later let the Soldier get freed completely
.
I'll be honest, I only skimmed the cosmic Hulk story cuz I hate the whole idea of a mechanical Hulk stronger than the Hulk is. Lame. The story though is yet another glorifying of Talbot and shows his relationship with Betty a bit. Also, this is the only one with art that I flat out didn't like.
The Samson story is not bad actually . Shows what he's doing for the bad guys and that his conscience is starting to work its way back out a bit.
The Red SheHulk story is not bad as well. Did nearly the impossible and made me mildly give a crap about Redshehulk. Contains easily the BEST THING about the issue too which is that they state that Jenn isn't really dead, it was just an LMD. Good that she's not dead, bad that once again they used the cheap LMD excuse for a cheap dramatic moment.
As for the last story, I generally hate deadpool, and I hate the exponential increase in Hulk-like characters over the past while, so I hate this story. Nuff said.
Overall, I would never spend money on this ish, but if you're liking the Hulk stuff lately this is more of the same.

Shield #1
There were people looking forward to this, I was very nervous about it though, and it turns out with good reason as they did exactly what I'd hoped they wouldn't.
Either this doesn't take place in 616 continuity, or it does and they're once again unnecessarily shoving a bunch of stuff into continuity that doesn't fit, or at best fits awkwardly.
Either way though the comic is pretty ridiculous. Apparently in 1582
Galileo invented a machine that somehow forced Galactus not to eat the Earth. And 400 years later Reed Richards has a hard time doing it? Man, turns out Richards is like a ******ed chimpanzee compared to a bunch of guys in the past. Who'da thunk it.
.
I won't talk about the main characters or overall plot of the story so as not to spoil.
I dunno, some people might think it's cool, but I think it's just plain stupid.
I was very impressed by the artwork which has tons of detail fit into a number of different cultural settings.
Definitely don't recommend.

Iron Man Legacy #1
I can't figure out what continuity this fits into, and I'm finished the issue. If it's 616, at what time point in continuity? Seems redundant since another Iron Man series is going already and it has better writing than this one.
The art is very strong though.
Not bad, but not great. The only reason I plan to read the next issue is due to the last panel revealing that
Doom is behind Stark's problems. And I'm a sucker for a Doom story (it helps that Doom looks awesome in that panel).

Spider-Man: Fever
Man, this issue was just not for me. All I can say is whoever put it together has done lots of drugs. Just not my kind of comic.
It's like a comic out of the 70's so if you like retro feel to comics or a trippy style art, you'll like this I guess.
I personally highly don't recommend it. Couldn't even get myself to finish the issue, and i got it for free.

Wolverine Weapon X 12
Okay, i know this story arc blatantly rips off the main plot of Terminator, but you know what? They're doin a darn good job with it. The new characters are interesting, the ones we already know are being used well, and the art is very well done, including the hefty dose of action we get. Throw in the nice twists I didn't see coming and I'm a happy man with this ish. Recommend!

One more important thing to note if you haven't already read it I mentioned in the Secret Avengers thread that in a variety of ish's coming out next Wednesday there is an ad revealing that
the leaping silhouette from the SA teasers is actually Beast! And he's in a new costume with A's on it instead of X's :D

AND THAT'S ALL FOR THIS WEEK FOLKS! Hope y'all found reading this enjoyable :)

That bit about [blackout]Ulik[/blackout] actually sounds pretty well in-character, to be honest. He was never the sharpest tool in the shed.

Good to know. I only have one issue with him and it's an older one, so my knowledge on him is fairly sparse.

Glad to hear Ultimate X is keeping it's charm. Really digging a story where Loeb isn't writing any action or something lol.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised. A current Loeb story that not only doesn't sicken me but actually is quite good. Let's hope he can keep this miracle up.

Aslong as he doesn't turn this into anything of a superhero vs. villain stuff. Which is what i'm worried of since the villain variant for #1 had Sabretooth.
