I consider Robert Deniro to be in my top three favorite actors of all time, but it seems like he has not given damn in forever. The last time I enjoyed one of his performances was Heat.

I can't even finish watching that damn Intern trailer. Old Deniro with the young kids and getting coffee for Anne Hathaway. **** you.

Young Deniro will forever be an all time great tho.

Wait for his performance in Russell's "Joy"...

It sounds lame to say, but I don't like seeing Jlaw push him around.

This man was playing russian roulette and taking names in the movies once upon a time. *sobs*

No Pacino is doing way worst than De Niro. At least De Niro has David O. Russell by his side along with 'Hands of Stone'.

Well I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that there aren't many good interesting roles for 70 year olds. You bet your ass Leo never would have taken his place as Marty's go to guy if age wasn't a factor. I do think it would have been cool for him to have taken Sheen's part in The Departed which was offered to him first, but I love Sheen in it.

Pacino's done quite well this year, at least on the Indie circuit with Manglehorn (which is really good), The Humbling and Danny Collins.

Maybe DeNiro just wants to have fun.

I mean his status as a legend is undeniably certified. He's given classic performances, been in classic movies, he might just wanna have some fun and get his check.

And as people point out he still has these O Russell films which give him good dramatic material. He also has the Bernie Madoff TV movie coming up.

Now Pacino I'm not sure. Apparently StarLord says he's doing indies, but imo his career is all f***ed up. But again he's an undeniable legend. He doesn't have anything to prove.

De Niro is like one of those divorced housewives in their 50's who become wild and promiscuous. They've paid their dues in their youth, now let em have some fun.

sometimes I think he's just doing those movies for the money nowadays, DeNiro needs dinero

I started watching De Niro's later movies so didn't get what all the fuss was about.
I saw Godfather 2 recently, an eye opener with regards to his talent to say the least.
Basically, De Niro has been phoning it in for years.

So, you haven't seen Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Cape Fear, The Dear Hunter, etc? His best performances?

I thought everyone knew that he's been taking roles just to pay for Tribeca Film Festival for a while?

Bingo.

The man is old. He has been acting for many decades and has done the hardest possible work to get where he is now. He's made many great films. He's won awards. He is known as an acting legend. What more could he possibly have at this point? He has the prestige and the money. He knows his best days are behind him and I think he's okay with that. Now he's just a guy in his 70's who just wants to live life and have some fun. The fact he still wants to act is something else.

Could you imagine telling young deniro his older self would have a massage from Barbara Streisand and wearing a fake boob?

Old Deniro, Nicholson and Hoffman are all at an age where they just want to have fun/paycheck.

I wouldn't put Jack Nicholson in the same category. He's been away from films for 5 years now, and sure he may have had one or two roles purely for paycheck reasons, but nothing like Deniro's doing with straight-to-video guff like Killing Season, The Bag Man, Freelancers and Heist.

By far the worst thing De Niro has done is Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Nicholson is too busy sitting in the front row of Laker games to be in any more movies.

Even when he was filming he always had it contracted he was given time to sit at the games anyways.

Silver Linings Playbook. Not first lead, but hardly as light-hearted as a Focker movie.

Unfortunately, most highly-regarded thespians seem to reach a certain age where they largely switch to autopilot, whether it's because they burned out the passion they had for acting in their younger days, they're older and less energetic, or they just know they're well-established and want to spend their old age relaxing in less demanding roles and having a little fun.

De Niro and Pacino are probably the most egregious examples of this (and some of what De Niro has done has been just embarrassing), but it's not like Michael Caine or Morgan Freeman do much challenging either. They're always enjoyable to watch onscreen, but they coast along being Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman. Freeman was in Ted 2 and Olympus Has Fallen, FFS. And Caine is co-starring with Vin Diesel in The Last Witch Hunter. Caine has been notorious since the '70s for having no shame about appearing in any random crap you put in front of him if you throw enough money at him, though, so that's nothing new for him.

And apart from The Grey, Liam Neeson hasn't done much really meaty, acting-wise, apart from continually reprising his Taken character, interspersed with slight variations on his Taken character.

Anthony Hopkins does a lot of slumming and cruising along on autopilot too. Stuff like Red Dragon, Odin, etc., he just cruises through being Anthony Hopkins.

Gary Oldman obviously doesn't have the same fire and passion he used to have either, and hasn't since the 1990s. He's even admitted in interviews that acting doesn't mean as much to him as it used to. He went all-out in his early roles and burned it all out of his system, is the impression I get from him. He freely admits that half the better-known roles he's done in the 2000s, like Harry Potter or Batman, he just does because his kids wanted him to, stuff like that.

Johnny Depp just cruises along in generic Johnny Depp mode 99% of the time, except for making an overdue comeback with Black Mass where he reminded everyone he can actually act and not just run around playing dress-up and acting goofy.

But like others have pointed out, all of these people are among the most highly-regarded thespians around, and De Niro, Pacino, and Hopkins in particular have given some of the most iconic and acclaimed performances in movie history. So I think they just reach a certain age where they know their legacy is sealed no matter what they do now.

With Neeson its actually quite sad. I'll track down the interview again but he has admitted to at certain times more or less taking on anything to keep busy after the loss of his wife.

Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman, people know what they are getting when they hire them. You hire Morgan Freeman for the Morgan Freeman role, you know? It may not be challenging but they aren't bad in the roles by any means.

DeNiro can be outright one of the worst things in whatever he's in.

Pacino has always been choosy with the roles he accepts and has IIRC had at one time a 4 year gap (1985 - 1989) between films solely of his choosing not cause offers were not forthcoming.

Pacino tends to make few casting faux pas with one I can think of that was not so great
