Robert Downey Jr.- Greatest Comeback in Film History?

I don't know--Travolta in Pulp Fiction was huge back in the day. That was a huge friggin' comeback. From a punchline in a joke to the hippest thing out? Huge. Downey's overcome personal problems (as far as we know), but has never had trouble finding work. This is because Downey is ultimately more talented than Travolta, to be certain, but I think I'm going with Travolta on this one.

I do agree, the comeback of travolta was huge...but you know the fact that robert downey jr has a greater range in his acting skill.

comedy +drama+ action+ im sure he can play any role you want him too.

Travolta really didnt go through the things that downey went through. I remember when he was doing Ally Mcbeal and he got into trouble YET AGAIN that EVERYONE in show business said his career was done. Talk about coming back to superiority...

I wouldn't say he plays himself in every film.... Whats the same between Zodiac and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang?

Well, he usually has this dry sarcastic humour and a bit of swagger. Ofcourse it appears in different variaties of the same persona (much like Nicholson does). I enjoy it greatly though.

"My Clique stay in Jail like Robert Downey Jr."-NORE

Dudes been trying to get on the comeback trail for a decade but it seems he got his stuff together the past 3 years or so.

Its a good look. But he still seems like he would casually snort a mountain of that snow because of that swagger lol.

Downey's got screen presence, which cannot be acted. Another big help for him was that he sort of faded away for a while. Britney, Lindsey, and others need to learn to go away before they come back.

No, they just need to go away. :cwink:

Yeah, it's pretty impressive. Good on him, he was always a tremendous talent, glad he's been able to conquer his demons.

Good call.

I havent seen Zodiac yet, I think its going to be coming on one of the movie channels pretty soon though. I liked him in A Scanner Darkly, real interesting movie overall. He has comeback in a big way. I'd say definitely a Top 10 in greatest comebacks

I would definately rate RDJ come back higher.
It's not just so much of a comeback , it has to do with staying power.
Travolta was hip in the 70's-80's , the lost it and became popular again with Pulp Fiction and then sorta went away.

Downey on the other hand was popular , did his booze-drugs era and slowly but surely crawled back and so far is proving that he isn't a one hit wonder.

Holy crap, I didn't know he was a cast member of SNL, it was like for one season but still. Found my fun fact of the day.

i know thats why i thought he outshined travolta...and i think Downey will be around for a long long time..while travolta will phase out again

I'm so glad if anyone deserved another shot it was him. He's been one of my favorites for many years. I like a lot of the stuff he's done Chances Are, Less Than Zero, Weird Science, Chaplin, Two Girls and a Guy, Black & White. I even liked that movie where he was a ghost and the one with Marisa Tomei. I spent the last 3 years forcing Kiss, Kiss Bang Bang on my friends since I thought it was a genius piece of work. Some of them loved it some didn't. Those that didn't though now that he's playing Stark could probably appreciate it better. Thank You Jon Favreu for realizing that this man is more talented then most of the so called greats of this generation. Can't wait for Tropic Thunder.

I hate Travolta so much the man's always been a hack to me. I could count the Travolta movies I liked in one hand and yeah that list includes Look Who's Talking :o

The man is amazing in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, but His cameo in Lucky You was hilarious and worth the rent of that movie alone.

i dont think Downey really made a comeback or had to make a comeback. He has a career of ups and downs, but in general ialways thought he was a good actor.

I don't think it's gonna be a massive hit, but I know for sure it's not gonna fail, and I don't even think it will be average, I think it's gonna be one of the big films this summer.

I would say he has definately had the biggest ressurgence by any actor. I thought after being arrested so many times it was definately over for him . He seemed to keep getting second chances but would end up into the same trouble . I thought he would either be dead or serving a long sentence eventually.

It'll be interesting how Robert Downey Jr. portrays Tony Stark's descent into alcoholism seeing as how he has some personal experience to draw upon there.

Iron Man will be a failure,or average.

That is intriguing, how the hell do you know that?
What were your favourite scenes in the film? What about the appearance of Fury?

Oh, I'm sorry. You haven't seen the film yet. My mistake :o

It was actually his role in Ally McBeal that made me a fan and I'm pretty sure he won an Emmy for it too. Great character and I've been enjoying him as an actor ever since.

I am disagreed, as Dawney also had problems finding a job, because not all filmmakers wanted to work with him, especially after what he has done on sets.

P.S. I have finally ordered A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints!

Downey Junior has had an up and down career. I remember when he was on Alley McBeal and they where saying thats his comeback.

I really liked RDJ in Wonder Boys
