Robert Downey Jr. Is Dr. Doom / Victor Von Doom - "Same task, new mask"

Phase 4/5 were weak asf.

Some super soldier serum is just what the doctor ordered.

I'm not a fan of this casting, but I'm not expecting them to actually make this version of Doom actually be (related to) Tony Stark. I imagine he'll just be Victor and RDJ will do a very different voice, and have the mask on most of the time (maybe even do it Mandalorian style with him not even always needing to be on set since he can dub over a body double), and if we see him without the mask he's covered in prosthetics from his face being melted/scarred.

I'm so confused by this casting. I know the rumours were swirling, but RDJ is so iconic and I felt his ending in the MCU was perfect and this (sort of) undoes that for me. It just feels somehow lazy... like fancasting gone mad (although did any fans really want this?)

As much as the original Fantastic Four movies were flawed, I genuinely would have been more impressed had they revealed Julian McMahon as Doom. I have a soft spot for him still (it's the nostalgia of that time)

I'm sure there is a plan and this wasn't some desperate decision, but I'm feeling unsure about this.

Why even cast RDJ then? They could get almost any actor for a lot less money. If this casting is real, meaning that the Russos aren't just trying to throw people off with a fake announcement, then Doom will be a Tony variant. Thet's the only reason you'd get him for this role.

I don’t see why he has to be an Iron Man variant?

Think about
Chris Evans in Deadpool, he’s playing Johnny Storm, a completely different character in the MCU.

They can easily pass it off with the multiverse. Also Doom is primarily masked and heavily scarred.

I’d prefer it if he wasn’t but even if he is an Iron Man variant, once the MCU resets at the end of Secret Wars I imagine all characters will be up for grabs again. So we will likely see an MCU Von Doom at that point anyway.

What the actual...............

Cant wait for Deadpool to ridicule this decision.
LMAO Ironically he already has " Till you're 90 "

Im glad the first few posts on Page 1 sum up how i feel. Its a insidious casting decision. For the diehard Marvel fans against this decision i genuinely feel for you.

This is happening because Disney’s stock has declined over 30% in the last few years.
That's a reason but what more directly lead to this was pivoting away from Kang as a result of Jonathan Majors being a terrible person and audiences not responding well to Quantumania. What Marvel should have done was recast and strive to right the ship with Kang but instead they're all in on Doom as the main villain of Avengers 5. Which I guess makes sense, but having RDJ play him is lunacy and desperation all wrapped up in the same package. If they had marched, say, Cillian Murphy out on that stage who's quite literally in the same boat as RDJ by having just won an Oscar for one of the biggest movies last year, there would have been much more of a positive response.

I was kinda skeptical of it last night, but after a good nights sleep, and reminding myself that the Russo's are back (which I LOVE!), I'm starting to like RDJ as Doom. Let's f****** go!

Then do Superior Iron Man
This. It would have been miles more preferable by comparison. As it is, it just reeks of trying to relive the MCU glory days and botchering for yet another time one of Marvel's greatest villains into an evil Tony Stark variant. This feels downright insulting to anyone who's a fan of Doom and wanted to see him be done right after so many blundered adaptations.

But the majority of people seem to be eating this up, so I guess we're on the minority on this.

I wanted Superior Iron Man, but if RDJ gives his absolute best to this I’ll definitely give it a chance.

That would work much better for me rather than the Stark variant angle.

No sir, I don't like it. If he is truly playing Victor Von Doom, I just don't like it...

If he's playing a variant... ok, but why not just cast a good actor (Cillian Murphy) that would get people excited? This is so weird...

Will the real Victor Von Doom please stand up.

Then why cast RDJ at that point? You could literally cast anyone else. Like Spider-Fan said in another thread, even if it's indeed Victor it doesn't matter. They are absolutely casting RDJ due to the association to Iron Man.

And we're not getting another Doom after this, this is the casting.

There’s no way they’re going to keep Downey Jr. under the mask the whole time either.

I also don’t think we’ll get another Doom.
Yeah, you don't bring back the man whose performance kicked off your cinematic universe and keep his face covered. Curious now if he'll be teased in Fantastic Four.

The move is desperate, though hopefully Downey Jr. differentiates performances enough to not make you think about Tony. Part of that will be hard to do, but we shall see. If he can bring more of the energy he had in Oppenheimer and less of...well, Tony, then I could see it.

I believe that this is it as far as Doom goes and there won’t be another. That said there is the smallest chance that if fans see the movie, hate what they do, and make a big enough fuss about it you could see a Mandarin style attempt to make it up to fans.
