Robocop 30th anniversary

Happy 70th Birthday to Peter Weller!

And Happy 67th Birthday to Nancy Allen!

Yep! RoboCop is 70 years old and shares the same birthday as his partner Anne Lewis, who's almost 70 herself.

Happy birthday to our unfortunate cops.

Unrelated note: I had such a huge crush on the lady scientist (key engineer?) when I was a kid.

I grew up watching Robocop 2 more than Robocop. No, the score isn't as good as the first film's, but still has some great moments. Especially that main theme and some of the underlying Robocain stuff.

ITV used to show it late night all the time in the UK in the mid 90's along with stuff like Big Trouble In Little China and Total Recall so I ended up watching it a lot more than the original as well.

It maybe doesn't have quite the drama of the original(although it seemed to be setting up plots for a 3rd film that didn't happen with his wife/family) but I think it might well be the best of the various dystopian action settings of the era taking very effective shots at capitalism and political corruption run amok whilst staying very fun and never coming across as preachy.

Incidentally I do wonder about this view a lot of people seem to have about action blockbusters in the mid/late 80's into very early 90's, they tend to be put down as "Reagan blockbusters" yet actually I think this was an era when action films were probably pushing the strongest anti capitalist/US imperialist message, you couldn't walk for corrupt corporations and CIA men. I suspect a big issue was that post Blade Runner failure Hollywood put the kibosh on more obviously arty sci fi so a lot of such politics ideas ended up bleeding into action cinema instead.

30 years? My, time passes quickly. I got that 20th anniversary steelbook DVD when it came out.

The practical effects still look damn good.

And Poledouris' score... :hmr:

That betrayal scene is still gold to this day. The score is a big part of that.

I still love the shootout at the drug factory how Robo just strolls in and locks in on all the targets and delivers one of the most bad ass lines in movie history "come quietly, or there will be trouble".

I have to say Nancy Allen aged pretty well from the eighties. Well, at least compared to myself, lol.

And yes, I agree on the practical effects. They hold up so much better than some CGI-stuff decades later. Robocop is a timeless classic, and it's always fascinating today to see which action flick from that era lived to gain simular status.

Dude I totally remember that change. It was not too uncommon for many movies to film alternate takes, not only to give the production options during the assembly of the movie but also for broadcast versions.

Well, I'm glad to know I'm not a nut! I knew it happened.

I can't believe it's been 30 years. I remember the first time I watched RoboCop 1 was on VHS during my 4th grade year. My dad rented it from the local mom & pop store before BlockBuster & Hollywood video existed.......

Would still motorboat. Nostalgia.

Still one of the best shoot outs ever imo.

Happy 30th anniversary to the original and best RoboCop movie.

Yep, RoboCop came out in theaters 30 years ago today. I watched the unrated cut this morning. And listened to the complete soundtrack afterwards. Both the movie and score still hold up quite well, imo.

RoboDoc: The Creation of RoboCop (OFFICIAL TRAILER 2017)

Looks great. Still disappointed that Weller declined to participate in the documentary, but I'm very excited for the RoboDoc regardless of his absence.

Did Weller give a reason for why he declined to participate?

Pretty much what OutOfBoose posted. Weller was tired of talking about RoboCop and felt he had nothing else to add or say in the RoboDoc, which was strange b/c the RoboDoc seems to be the end all be all of RoboCop documentaries. I was particularly interested in his opinion on RoboCop 2. Weller's absence is the only quibble I have with the RoboDoc. There's unfortunate reasons and circumstances as to why Miguel Ferrer, Robert DoQui, Dan O'Herlihy, Basil Poledouris, Irvin Kershner, and Leonard Rosenman were absent, but the original RoboCop himself. Missed opportunity.

Robocop's getting an Alamo drafthouse re-release. It's gonna be a whole event in Dallas.

He has no obligation to work on it really.

They had been conducting interviews for this for years, so there's a very good chance that Miguel Ferrer actually participated.

I heard that Weller is expected to appear for that. I thought he was tired of talking about RoboCop.:o

None of the cast and crew are obligated to work on it and yet most of them did anyway.

The makers of the RoboDoc posted on their facebook page the day of Ferrer's passing that he couldn't participate (though he wanted to) b/c of his illness.

OK and? I get you are a fan of this documentary and all, but Peter Weller stated his reasons for not doing it, and I can't really disagree with his view.

Saw this on Imgur.

Not sure what it's for but it's a cool visual.
