Oh, Joel Kinnamon knows plenty about acting.
But from an acting standpoint, walking around just moving your jaw, it's not so interesting.
He's kind of right. Walking around, moving like a robot and only moving and acting with your jaw isn't a terribly interesting performance. It's cool looking, thanks to the slow, rigid robotic movements. But it's not terribly interesting. I'm sure that Weller went through a lot, and I know he had to do a lot of training to be able to move right in the suit, and he did give a good performance, but let's not pretend that it was some brilliant, untouchable one.
It sounds like they want him to be able to move in less of an obviously robotic manner than Weller did, which makes perfect sense. It just sounds like they're going to portray robots as more advanced, similar to AI and movies along those lines.
If he looks more human, it will require that much more of a nuanced performance to be able to pull off the disconnect from humanity element. That could result in something special. Think about it. If you can see the eyes, then the eyes have to become "robotic" in their mannerisms and movements. There are some fantastic possibilities.
I doubt they're going to have him look like just like a regular cop...he'll still probably have visual elements of the classic Robocop design.
