Drama Rocky/Creed Cinematic Universe Thread

My review

There's no f**kin way a kid in America was a fan of Naruto and had a poster in their bedroom in 2002 unless they get their VHS tapes imported.

Well Adonis was living with Maryann at that point and she is REALLY rich and he lives in LA. I can buy that Maryann was able to get some imports if she wanted to get them.

My ranking of Rocky training montages. I need to see Creed 3 again to see how that one rates but it wasn’t too memorable.

1. Rocky 3: Apollo trains Rocky. Seeing them actually become friends and humanizing Apollo instead of just letting him be an arrogant jerk was brilliant

2. Creed: Seeing Rocky becoming the trainer while going through his own battle with cancer was really effective. You believe that Donny is trying to make the connection with Rocky he never got with Apollo and Rocky has found purpose again after losing everyone else around him.

3: Rocky 2. It’s basically the first movie montage again. But Adrian telling Rocky to “win” and then the kids chasing Rocky on his iconic run through Philly to the top of the stairs

4. Rocky 1. The original. Not as flashy or intense as the ones after, but it started it all

5. Rocky Balboa: Duke’s speech along with Rocky running up the steps one last time was a nice tough

6. Rocky 4: The longest training montage of the series, they actually split it into two parts. At this point it started to feel a little tired.

7. Creed 2: In the desert. He does some neck muscle training. Not sure what that was supposed to do.

I thought this was fantastic. Would have to watch the first one again to see which I prefer, but I definitely liked this one more than the 2nd one. Adonis' scenes with his daughter were adorable. MBJ's directing was a standout, too. Guy's got a bright future, that's for sure.

I thought this was a significant improvement over Creed II. Great performances all around. Some of the script was a bit convoluted and contrived at times, but the acting was great. I also enjoyed Jordan's directing style. He's clearly been doing his homework over the years.

my heart was breaking over Mary-Anne.

I thought this easily had the best fights in the entire Rocky Creed franchise. Obviously much of it was cinematic but it was nice to see much of the strategy in boxing (feints, slips, traps, parries, etc.) being implemented for once.

This was very enjoyable.

Majors was great as the antagonist and MBJ's directorial debut was solid. Stallone's absence was definitely felt though.

The first Creed is still the best one but all of them have been good.

I'm fine with Stallone being gone. They gave Rocky a nice conclusion and ending in the last movie. It felt like they were retiring his character. I don't think he needed to be in this film. It worked fine without him.

Been rewatching all the films again. I'm pretty comfortable in saying that Rocky Balboa is the best of all the sequels for me, and Rocky IV has the best final fight.

Yall can call me weird, but Rocky III I think is the best Rocky sequel. Rocky II is just kind of Rocky, only he wins this time. Rocky IV is gloriously silly, Rocky V sucks, and Rocky Balboa has greatness in it and then odd choices that just don't work at all. Rocky III is silly in parts, but it gives Rocky a new and relatable motivation and I think the concept of Rocky losing his edge and needing to find new reasons to fight for and get back the Eye of the Tiger is his best sequel arc, with the exception of Creed, but Creed also has a weak villain. Clubber Lang is awesome.

So yeah, call me weird but Rocky III is my 2nd favorite in the series

Rocky II has the fun of Rocky blowing his money lol and Apollo has a great arc as well. Angry that his fans have turned on him and calling him a sellout.

I just love this whole series. Each film just feels like checking in on a friend every few years. And each has its own identity honestly. Even V has a lot of things I love.

I at least like all the movies, except 5. There are a few isolated scenes in 5 I like, but the movie as a whole just....doesn't work. There was a nugget of a good film in there, just executed awful.

It certainly should’ve felt like a slamdunk with John G. Avildsen returning to direct the “final” one (it’d be the equivalent of Ryan Coogler coming back to finish off the Creed series).

But to be honest, V helps to enhance both Rocky Balboa and Creed. Balboa didn’t have to go through the trouble of explaining why Rocky was poor again, and his strained relationship with his son. And Creed also could piggyback off that with Rocky’s reluctance at first with training someone.

That's all retroactive, though. Plot points working in a future movie i dont think make the original one any better. They just had good ideas to use some of that material later for a better film down the line. Like, Creed 1-3 don't change my feelings on Rocky IV. Rocky IV is still a silly as hell movie that borderlines on so bad it's good territory often. It's place in my Rocky hierarchy hasn't changed since Creed films came out.

Rocky V had great ideas in it. I like the idea of Tommy Gun, I like the Rocky having CTE plot, and I even like the idea that he and his kid don't get along or are distant cause he hasn't been home much. You describe the movie and its synopsis, it sounds good. It's just...not well done in practice.

There are rumors that Stallone is working on extended cuts for both Rocky V & Rocky Balboa. Both were missing from the recent 4K set.

I still haven't seen the Rocky IV one he did. Mostly cause I havent wanted to rebuild the entire series again, and it's 15 bucks online. But.....he is gonna force me to buy the series again, isn't he? :cmad:

Balboa I know he talked about for over a decade when he did his Rambo: Director’s Cut. It’s mostly the deleted scenes that are on the DVD/Blu-ray. Personally I like it as is without them.

V is trickier cause he wasn’t the director so it’d be more the Writer’s Cut lol I saw the assembly version that was on YouTube a few years back. It was certainly a darker cut. And it would mess with continuity if he added back the Marie on the streets scene.

There's really no and movie in the series at all. I enjoy all of them .

Have you all seen the growing number of conspiracy theorist, racist clowns online who are trying to say that Creed III is actually a box office flop that no one is going to see and that the media is lying about its box office haul in order to prop up a film that is largely the product of African American artists?

We are living in an ugly world right now.

This is nothing new sadly. Many in the industry actively worked to tank the box office of Eddie Murphy's Boomerang back in the day for example.

Yahoo News sounds like an oxymoron since it's not 2002 anymore.
