My only beef in this film is Robert not come back to be with his father while being sick.

Finally watched this. It is, at the very least, as good as Rocky Balboa. Top stuff.

I quite enjoyed the movie- I must confess I don't nerd out for the Rocky series and thus you won't find me dancing in the aisles or anything but it was a good Sports movie.

This was by far my favorite film of the year and I've seen a lot of films. It made me laugh, cry, cheer and it was inspirational. If I were to give it a score 10/10 it was a beautiful ode to the original Rocky. I know the director of this is up for Black Panther and he would be a good choice but I'll be more excited to hear about his next original project

Coogler did so good on this. Hope he gets Black Panther.

Anyways this was such a great Rocky movie and movie period. Sylvester gave an oscar-worthy performance.

I rolled my eyes when this was announced. I've been a lifetime rocky fan & a child of Philadelphia (though I live abroad now)- I didn't want a cheap rocky knockoff/ spinoff.

I finally watched it tonight. Wow. I thought seeing Rocky & Philly on screen would be the main pull for me- but now, if Stallone bows out, I'll still be watching. Jordan nailed it. Stallone should get an award for this. I've got some stuff going on in my life with my dad fighting cancer. To see Rocky (who I've always considered to be the embodiment of the spirit of Philadelphia) battle this hideous illness, was incredibly poignant to say the least.

Looking forward to Creed II!

there are some rumblings that Stallones performance may garner him some awards nominations

I think it would be very neat if in the sequel Doni is still living with Rocky and Milo Ventimiglia returns at some point to help care for his father, leading to a friendship between those two characters. I mean, if Aldonis considers Rocky his uncle, Robert would be his cousin, right? Just a few scenes where those two get to interact would be nice to see.

That's an interesting idea and I could see it work in the film. The only (minor) issue I have is that I am a little circumspect about Milo's acting considering it does sound like a solid supporting character. I wasn't all that impressed by him last time around.

I'd give him the benefit of the doubt with some solid direction from Coogler. I think the movie should forge ahead on brand new characters in the opposition for Creed, keep the nostalgic aspects to a minimum. But considering it might very well be Rocky's final bow, Milo's character might be a natural and maybe necessary addition to the cast, depending on where they decide to take the story.

Really want to see this film again, it'd by my fourth round. Hoping when my Dad comes into town we'll have time for it.

Just saw the film recently. I think it's definitely getting a little more than overrated. The music was too downplayed for me. Not as good as previous Rocky film scores. Even at the end when I thought it was finally going to kick into high gear, it holds back. A lot of film scores do this today, and IMHO, no bueno. I miss the big bombastic classic film scores of the 1980s.

I thought Jordan was OK, but he definitely didn't blow me away. He applied himself to this role physically very well. But I thought his presence was a little too low-key.

My other issue is that I just found it tough to buy that Apollo Creed had this son on the side the entire time. Creed didn't seem that kind of guy in the films.

Rocky has cancer and is getting chemotherapy, and his son is not in the picture at all. I'm sorry, that's not OK. Oh, Rocky didn't tell him. Why the hell wouldn't Rocky tell him? That makes absolutely no sense. I mean a big part of the sixth movie was about his relationship with his son.

The ending IMHO was a bit anti-climactic. I'm not sure that Adonis needed to win, but I think there needed to be something more of Adonis having a couple other inbetween fights before getting rushed to fight for the title. His earlier matches clearly weren't legitimate pro fights and didn't look like they were regulated or really all that official at all. Looked more like amateur exhibition bouts to me.

Now obviously, they could probably continue on if need be. But I dunno, the film was just a little flat to me.

I had the same issue with the score. I got really excited when that theme started up in the last round of the fight, but then it never went full blast.

Honestly I feel the same about many of the issues you mentioned, but they weren't big enough to keep me from really enjoying the film. As I've thought more about the movie, my rating has gone down a bit from what it was right after seeing it.

My biggest problem is that I didn't really love the main character, Adonis. MBJ did a good acting job, but he wasn't a character that stuck with me, whereas every other movie on my top ten list had very strong, memorable, likeable characters.

Yup, I don't get why it did that.

Honestly, I enjoyed the movie a lot. It's a good movie. It's very well made. But like you, I didn't love Adonis either. He didn't stick with me either like Rocky Balboa, or even like Apollo Creed did in the later films. Carl Weathers just had this weird charisma.

This is, literally, my only gripe with the film. I like the score a lot (the track during the training montage is excellent), but it held back during both the Rocky theme and at the end with The Final Bell.

That was my main issue with the movie. He's supposed to be 30ish or at least close to 30 years old and no real pro fights, and fighting for the title against the #1 p4p fighter in the world. Yeah no.

Spent my New Year watching this film. WOW I loved it! It surpassed my expectations. Loved the nostalgia and callbacks to the original first and second films. I'm a big fan of the entire franchise. Even liked Rocky 5 though ill admit its my least favorite of the series. But ill put this film right up there with the first two. I thought Rocky Balboa was a great send off to the character and thought the series would end there but this is an awesome way to keep the Rocky and now Creed legacy alive.

rocky opens with us seeing him fighting in bum fights for little money
creed opens with us seeing him fighting bum fights in mexico for little money

rocky is south philly trash
adonis goes to south philly to live with trash

rocky asks mickey for guidance and initially gets turned down
adonis asks rocky for guidance and initally gets turned down

mickey trains rocky using chicken chasing
rockey trains adonis using chicken chasing

rocky has a girlfriend who seems to have a mental disability (turns out she's just painfully shy)
adonis has a girlfriend who has some physical disability (hearing loss).

mickey trains rocky in a slugger style
rocky trains adonis in a slugger style

rocky runs through south philly in training
adonis runs through south philly in training

the champ picks rocky out of a hat as a promotional gimmick
the champ uses adonis for his name as a promotional gimmick

creed was nothing but rocky in black skin with some rap in the soundtrack.

IMO they did a disservice to that character by making it basically a Rocky 7 film. Here's a guy who clearly wished he knew his father, wanted to be like his father but left his father's home to walk in the footsteps of his mentor, live his life, live in his home and do exactly when he did. Donny Johnson didn't become ADONIS CREED, SON OF APOLLO, he became Rocky Jr. the son Rocky always wanted. Thats great for Rocky's legacy but not so much for Apollo's.

A PROPER Creed story would have had him in LA..working with Creed's old corner man Duke Evers (Actor Tony Burton is still around in his 70s)

No opening title or music, we go right into the story of the young man who never knew his father but has the same drive and even tho he's a gifted fighter able to adapt and use many styles, he's modeled his fighting style after his father. The attitude, the trash talk and big personality BUT unlike Apollo he doesn't wear it easy, its obvious he's walking in his fathers shoes and he's successful, he's winning fights and bringing the name Creed back but deep down hes STILL troubled because its NOT HIM..its his father. He's successful until he gets to that one opponent he can't beat..Apollo's style and tactics doesn't work on him and Adonis not only suffers his first lost but a Ronda Rousey type lost. With the rematch scheduled his gotta find HIMSELF if he wants to have any chance of beating this guy. Nothing in Apollo's bag of tricks can help him this time.

At the midpoint of the story he has a heart to heart with Apollos wife and she tells him about his father (this gives more meat to Phyllicia Rashad who was underused IMO) then he talks to his corner man Duke, then to his girlfriend who tells him to be himself this is intercut with the training session with duke who telling him pointers on his fathers style.

During the rematch in the 3rd act it plays out very similar to the movie where both fighters are trading blows until Adonis gets knocked down late in the fight. He gets to his feet before the 10 count and goes to his corner where Duke is freaking out. Adonis just closes his eyes and we see flashbacks of Apollo, his wife, Duke and his girlfriend telling to find himself and the bell rings and the final round starts and Adonis switches from his father's style and tactics to something else and throughout the round scores major blows ending in a knock out of his nemesis. Then we go to the epilogue where Adonis is in Philly and he goes into the Italian restaurant Adrian's and Rocky comes out and they talk. Rocky compliments him on his win and says he was wondering when he was going to stop being Apollo and start being himself. And Adonis asks Rocky who won the secret 3rd fight between them and Rocky looks at the picture of them on the wall, looks down then looks at Apollo's son and says "Well if you must know...." and just as he's about to say it we cut to black, and in big letters we see the word CREED (the first time we see the title of the movie)...credits roll..

His own music and style...not rocky's, living his own life not rocky's...if he has a surrogate father figure its Duke, not rocky. Thats what Creed should have been.

Instead it was rocky 2.0 almost step for step.

ill ignore the universal acclaim and the fact that the job Ryan Coogler did got him the Black Panther job because this idea is so much better

I think not

I'm sure I've said this before but I'm just happy to see Michael B Jordan immediately bounce back after the Fantastic Four disaster.

isn't that what rocky did in the first movie.. remember apollo just picked him at random not because he was a fighter of note.
