So what does everyone think happens at the end when the journalist receives it? I'd like to think the truth gets out about everything that happened so far, yet no one will believe a word of it because they think Rorschach is a psycho nut job.

I think it means that everything that was done will be undone. In other words, the truth will come out about the Dr. Manhattan bombs and the unease between the US and Russia will be recreated.

Basically, the message is that the ends truly don't justify the means and it shows the irony that the "smartest man in the world" can not plan for everything. I thought these were incredibly awesome messages.

Though, if I remember correctly, doesn't the psychologist in the book note that Kovacs' handwriting is compltely illegible to anyone but himself?

He does. But I believe Rorschach made another copy of his journal and says "tried best to make this legible" before he mails his journal.

Oh, yeah, I think I remember that now. It's been a few months since I read the book.

I kinda hope Ozzy gets away with it. Is that wrong?

No, the world is probably a better place for him getting away with it. At least for a while, anyway, until everyone reverts back to their nature ways of being complete savages.

The journalist/publisher says it best to the fat sloppy guy (who incidently, I feel represents humanity and to another extent, us, the viewers/fans)that the choice "is entirely in your hands".

I always thought it was interesting that when Kovacs is a child he admires Truman for making the decision to drop the bomb on Japan in order to stop the war and save more lives, but views Adrian's actions as wrong for doing the same thing on a bigger scale.

I'd bet the new frontiersman has probably less control over the alternative earth as fox news has to us...if you think about it, the liberals are going to argue with them into the ground. If a crazy elaborate scheme to set up veidt was made by a psycho like rorschach it probably wouldn't hold much water.

I like what manhattan says in the tv interview...something along the lines of...even in a world without war there are still threats and danger. Even if Rorschach doesn't undo everything...there will always be death..and thats why laurie and dan might still be needed to take archie out.

good call.

In the film didnt Rorschach only mail his journal before leaving for Antarctica? At which time he wasnt aware of the details of Ozymandias' plan to blow up the cities? At that point, all he knew was that he was likely the one who bumped off the Comedian?

Thats the fun of it!

Same discussion when the book was released! :)

Love the line ''I leave it entirely in your hands'' - it's a message to Seymour (you can decide what you pull out of the crank file) and to the audience (you can make up your own ending)

Sorry for stating the obvious though. :o

I think most people will walk away with the impression that Adrian is uncovered to the public . However , When a public figure is questioned in journalism it is always debated.
My view is that people in the Watchmen universe will view it as a conspiracy. Also World Peace will only be temporary .

But the lines are drawn and connections can be made from there.

See, I am under the impression that since Dr. Mannhattan was listed as the guilty party, and Dan's quote of "as long as they think Jon is still watching us..." that the Peace would last as long as the world thought Jon was going to go all wrath of God again if they started facing off. That was what I got out of the Nixon scenes, that vibe of "We can't fight our Ultimate Weapon". He said everyone would unite, but c'mon, what are they gonna do?

easy to take on people with less than 1000 posts, huh? you are, like, so brave.

Post count means nothing here, when someone can rack up 8,000 posts in a year. :whatever:

Interesting thought... that quote about connections and lines drawn.

I originally had the same question as The Incredible Hulk, but I see your point.

It would be interesting to know if they printed the journal and if the lines and connections were ever made...

I love this graphic novel !!

Lady Leonidas

I love the open ending in the comic and the movie....Although I'd hope that it wouldn't get published because Ozy did work hard to save the world although there were sacrifices

I don't think Ozy's peace will last. It is inevitable human nature and aggression will replace unity as time passes.

Now, upon first reading I like to think that the peace is broken by the journal and Veidt gets devoured alive.

But it would be for the worse and in reality it is unlikely that it would happen so clearly. New Frontiersman is mostly a conspiracy nutjob paper and even if they prove that it is Kovacs who wrote the journal, he'll be lumped in with them. And the mainstream media will write it off as a conspiracy theory, similar to how no one believes that there was a shooter on the grassy knoll (and in Moore's version of history there obviously was) and that the government assassinated Woodward and Bernstein.

Likely, no one will believe that report or those that do will be fringe right-winged people similar to Rorschach himself or leftist conspiracy theorists. However, it will cause people to start questioning the "world peace" they have and it will inevitably collapse upon itself.
