The two breakout movies from this year's lackluster Cannes seem to be the five hour Carlos, an epic story about terrorist Carlos the Jackal from Olivier Assayas, and Rubber, a movie about a killer tire.

Yes, a killer tire.

It sounds like a joke, but apparently the film is excellent. People are saying that the film is funny and strange and that the tire - which gets a credit! - is actually a character. Magnet, the genre arm of Magnolia, has picked up the movie and now they've released the first images of Robert, the tire.

Here's the synopsis:

Directed by Quentin Dupieux (Steak, Nonfilm), RUBBER is the story of Robert, an inanimate tire that has been abandoned in the desert, and suddenly and inexplicably comes to life. As Robert roams the bleak landscape, he discovers that he possesses telepathic powers that give him the ability to destroy anything he wishes without having to move. At first content to wreak havoc on small desert creatures and various lost items, his attention soon turns to humans, resulting in the most gory vehicular-related mayhem inflicted on screen by an “inanimate” object since Christine.

Yeah, I feel the same way. It has to be the most ridiculous concept I've ever heard of, and yet... if this movie was playing at the theater down the street, I'd HAVE to cancel my plans tonight just to go watch it.

Now I want Mega Shark vs. Rubber Tire

actually the earth was caught in the tail of a rouge comet for a few days and it made all electronic devices (as well as trucks, planes, etc) come to life, but for some reason (PLOT HOLE!) cars did not

Was that the one with the Green Goblin themed truck? Or am I on drugs?

yup there was a GG themed truck, so no, your not on drugs :hehe:

Saw this at the Helsinki International Film Festival a week ago. It was good.

* waits for fanboys to rip this movie about not being faithful to the source material *

lol

Speaking of source material (and I say this as a huge fan of Raimi's first two Spider-Man films)... isn't it just a little ironic that we got a more comic book-accurate Green Goblin costume on a demon possessed truck in a silly 80's horror movie than in a big-budget Spider-Man movie?

That trailer was so insane I think I have to see the movie.

I love the: "is it black" line.
