Rugby World Cup 2011

I need New Zealand to win by less then 20 points as I have a bet going where the only way I lose is if New Zealand wins by more then 20 points which unfortunately is possible. As much as I support France I don't see them posing too much of a difficulty to the All Blacks who have the best team in the world right now.

Still without Dan Carter and with France's unpredictable nature...

The match that no-ones wants to play turned out to be quite the spectacle as Australia takes home the bronze medal with a 21-18 win over Wales. Both teams were determined to end the tournament on a high and go out all guns blazing. Australia took a 7-3 lead at half time before Wales snatched the lead shortly after the break. It wasn't enough to stop the Aussie though as they slotted over more points to end the tournament on a positive note.

6 weeks and 47 games (and every minute of it I watched :hehe:) it all comes down to this - The World Cup final between host nation New Zealand and France. On paper it looks like one of the most lopsided finals in Rugby World Cup history, New Zealand have looked solid all tournament, they've had injuries to key players but have remained focused the whole way through knowing their fate is now in their hands. France on the other hand have somehow managed to fumble their way to the Final, relying on luck and the misfortune of others to progress as far as they have, some would go so far to say they are undeserving finalists (like me). All signs point to a comfortable New Zealand win here, easy wins over Tonga, Japan, Canada and France in the Pool stage followed by a hard fought quarter final against Argentina and a clinical display against Australia put them in pole position. There's been nothing from the French side to show they've improved over the last few weeks, struggled against Japan and Canada, followed by losses to New Zealand and more embarrassingly Tonga, a decent display against England in the quarters but a dour one-point win over Wales with a one man advantage for over 60 mins, not to mention the rumours of team infighting - and yet you can never write them off. If there's one team New Zealand would have liked to have avoided playing in the Final it's the French because they are so unpredictable. France have a history of being a thorn in New Zealand's world cup plan (dramatically losing in the 1999 semi finals and in 2007 in the quarters) and all Kiwis are aware of it. New Zealand should win this, it's almost impossible to think otherwise given the form of the two sides, but have France been playing possum all along? Is this the moment they surprise everyone and once again deny New Zealand that converted World Cup trophy? One things for certain as much as a foregone conclusion this seems I wouldn't bet my house on it.

The monkey is finally off the back as New Zealand hold on desperately for a hard fought 8-7 win over France to etch their name onto the trophy for the first time in 24 years. France were a shadow of the team that have played in the tournament so far as they threw everything at the All-Blacks for the full 80 mins and arguably looked the better of the two teams throughout. New Zealand scored the the only points of the first half on the back of a lapse in French defence taking a 5-0 lead. They extended the lead by a further 3 and looked in control until the French scored dramatically to turn the game on it's head. The final 20 mins looked as if New Zealand would collapse as the French piled on the pressure and looked for that elusive score to snatch victory but the All-blacks held on to finally do away with the demons that have haunted from past world cups and become World Champions for the second time.

New Zealand 8
Tries: Woodcock
Penalty: Donald

France 7
Try: Dusautoir
Conversion: Trinh-Duc

Referee: Craig Joubert (South Africa)

Damn, those last minutes were nerve-racking to say the least.

Really thought we could make it. But of course, it's a well-deserved win for NZ if one looks back on the whole tournament.

Very much so. Well that concludes the tournament, until we meet again in 4 years when England plays host to the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

NZ has been in party mode for the past hour. There was a huge fireworks display on the beach down the street. I haven't seen the country this amped since in the America's Cup win in '95. :yay:

I suppose that means another Queen St. ticker tap parade is pending...

The refereeing was pretty bad during that match with all the decisions going to New Zealand. France were the better team on the day. However, based on the whole tournamenet the All Blacks deserved the win. And I won my bet.
