Action-Adventure Russos' and Hemsworth's "Extraction" (Netflix)

That sequence was impressive but the rest of the movie and the characters were so incredibly hollow and boring.

Oh for sure. After they escaped the building in the helicopter, I was surprised it still had a half hour left. I would have just killed the bad guy there.

Tempted to renew my Netflix for this. :hmm:

If this movie was Indonesian or South Korean then the critiques for it somehow wouldn't exist

*looks at Kane52630’s reviews/ratings for this and a lot of other films when I read them*

There is no way The Flash is better than this. This looks and has actual genuine craft and work put into it. The former just looks like CGI sludge.

Also, the first one had “complex plot and characters”? :funny: Don’t get me wrong, the first film was compelling and worked for what it needed to be, but it was just a means to serve all of the action in the film, nothing more.

This, the first film and other films like it are simply meant to be super entertaining action showcases, and there’s nothing wrong with that. I really liked the first film, and this was also great. If Chris Hemsworth and Sam Hargrave want to keep making these for as long as they want, until they can’t or don’t feel like it anymore, then I’ll keep watching.

Your taste in and standards for these kinds of movies is weird, man.

It's fine if you don't get my tastes, it's not that complicated. I simply tell say if I enjoyed the movie or not.

You are right, movies like these are made just to be action showcases and nothing more, I even said in my review that you apparently read. That "one shot" scene was indeed well done even though I obviously noticed the seams that connect each scene. Problem with that is they blew their wad early so you had an hour+ of nothing really topping it. But they all follow the same kind of story with the same kind of visual flair with the same kind of dull dialogue with bland main characters. When I've seen Ghosted, The Gray Man, The Mother, and even John Wick, they all roughly act the same to me. Is asking for compelling characters from these kinds of movies too much to ask? Apparently, I guess so.

As for the first one (and I wrote it in my review for the first one), Randeep Hooda was the only compelling/complex character because he actually had some interesting character development, unlike Chris Hemsworth's character who was and still is absolutely dull to me.

Also I'm reading some reviews and there's a few that I totally agree with.

Dude you wouldn't accept any criticism for the Raid movies that were essentially led by a stuntman who's acting was like wood and who's character development was zilch, just like Tony Ja before him, yet nobody complains about "compelling and complex" characters, they just enjoy them as action movies and want the hero to have screen presence and charisma, but when they are made in the US suddenly all these other requirements are needed.

Loved the sequel! Watched it last night and was blown away by the top notch action. An upgrade over the first movie in regards to action though I felt the story wasn’t as strong as the first film.

And with how it ended, I am not surprised we are getting a third film. Bring it on! These films can easily be the Netflix equivalent of the John Wick series
I’m sure Netflix see it that way too lol and will likely encourage the next film to not be a trilogy-ender.

The action is undeniably great, but there's pretty much nothing else here. The one take sequence is definitely an achievement worth praising but this isn't the game changing action film as some comments have stated. The movie mostly collapses after that point and is too long. Other than the action, everything about the movie is bland, with the bland grayish look that's becoming a Russo Brothers signature. Hopefully Hemsworth and Idris are allowed to display their charm and charisma a bit more in the 3rd one.

The entire approach to this movie seems to be "look at what all we can do in one take!" And sure, the craft in executing those long takes is impressive. It's just that there's no style or personality to speak of. There's no composition. No artistry. And certainly no one on screen compelling to watch. Comparing this to John Wick is an insult imo. This feels virtually interchangeable with The Gray Man or any of their other action ventures, just ya know, with more shaky-cam long-take action. The Old Guard didn't have that, but at least it had some personality. But I guess when one's written by Greg Rucka and the other by the Russos, that's to be expected.

Also, Idris Elba's presence was so random here. Talk about an easy paycheck lol.

*seeing more criticisms from people who didn’t like this film*

I loved this. Is it terribly deep? No. But Hemsworth is a compelling lead and I never felt bored even during the non action scenes. I liked Hemsworth and Farahani's characters a LOT and felt invested in them. Lawd, the action sequences. All three major set pieces are A level quality but that opening 21 min sequence in particular might easily be one the best action sequences i've ever seen, period. And yes I've seen the Raid movies and the John Wick movies, this is at least on par with them in terms of craft, although Wick gets the edge since its got a lot more visual style to it.

I'm now fully onboard with making this an ongoing series.

It’s slowly but steadily climbing up to the 80’s mark on RT. Good stuff.

Oh yeah i watched it on Release and boy is it fun.
Like sure its not super well written or so, but god damn it people...its a action movie.
Story does its job but the movie is carried by cool action.

What more can one want?
Like seriously cool action and i already want a third one right now.

This was definitely an improvement over the over rated previous movie for me. The action was a big step up, if a little video gamey at times. But it was good to see Rake vulnerable at times also and given a much more personal mission. I also liked the resolution at the end to the plot point from the first movie about his son. This one had a bit more emotion behind it which I personally prefer in my action movies as it makes you care about the characters more.

7.5/10.

80% on RT. Strong bump from the first movie and this could be a franchise that just gets better moving forward with more emphasis on story and characters as people have hinted at so far. Adding a few more bigger names to the franchise should also raise its profile.

i still need to watch the second but i cancelled netflix :/
