Ryan Murphy's The Prom

Looks like so much fun, I’ve been dying for more musicals to kick my heels up to at home

Watching it right now...it is definitely Ryan Murphy um and VERY over the top. In a lifetime sorta way.

I'm mean, its a Broadway musical heavily based in camp. I'm no huge fan of Ryan Murphy, but I'd be concerned if it WASN'T "over-the-top."

Like I said, it's VERY over the top imo. Hairspray was over the top, this is VERY.

I read that there was controversy with James Corden being cast. I thought he did a pretty good job though.

Corden is getting trashed in a lot of reviews for (according to them) playing an outdated and over the top cartoonish gay stereotype.

But isn’t that the character in the Broadway show? I saw a little bit of it on YouTube and the character seems over the top as it is

I think they're more pissed about it because Corden isn't actually gay. But for what it's worth, he's a very over the top straight guy on his show anyway so it wasn't really like he's out of his wheelhouse. People just generally don't seem to care for him.

Corden is kind of....a flamboyant straight man who could come across as gay if you didn’t know he wasn’t anyway.

I honestly thought he was gay until he mentioned his wife on his show. I do find his show funny and really enjoy his Crosswalk Musical sketches

I saw it and thought it was cute. Netflix does need more wholesome musicals like this. I agree that James Corben could have been replaced by someone like Titus Burgess but oh well. Nicole Kidman is actually really awesome in this

He seemed like a modern type of gay to me. One thing Ryan has always been good at is giving gay actors gay/straight roles so im not mad that a straight actor played gay.

I saw so many people saying this and now that I've seen it... I don't get it? He came off as very reserved to me, probably the least over-the-top out of all the actor characters. The Broadway take on the character was WAY more flamboyant and stereotypical. Maybe I'm biased because I watched with my best friend, who is a gay man growing up in the MidWest and really connected to Corden as Barry on a personal level, but I thought Corden gave a really incredible performance. The internet just really hates him for some reason. I've never understood it. But all he does is show up and people start reaching for torches and pitchforks.

All in all, I think it was an enjoyable movie. The writing was wildly inconsistent. Especially the first act got incredibly cringey at points. And I wish there was more focus on the couple instead of the actors, but that's the show, not the adaptation. I do hope to see Netflix invest in more Feel-Good musicals like this in the future. Bright Star, Tuck Everlasting, Big Fish... would love to see it.
