Universal has purchased David Guggenheim’s spec Safe House for $600k against $900k, winning out against two other movie studios in a bidding war. The action thriller tells the story of a CIA agent who becomes the only survivor after a CIA safe house attack, and must help a dangerous prisoner avoid being killed as they escape to a second safe house, “outmaneuvering various forces that want them both dead.”

Early days but this sounds like it has great potential.

Denzel Washington to Join Safe House

Denzel Washington is in talks to star in Universal Pictures' thriller Safe House, reports Variety.

The trade says that the studio has brought in director Daniel Espinoza to work through a quick rewrite with David Guggenheim, who penned the original script.

The film centers on a house sitter of a CIA-run safe house who must help a criminal, who's being hidden there, avoid being killed as they flee to another secure facility when the first house is destroyed by villains who want the witness dead.

The production is targeting a fall or winter start.

The movie follows Matt Weston (Ryan Reynolds), a CIA agent whose job is to keep a safe house in South America operational in case it needs to be used, what happens when rogue agent Tobi Frost (Denzel Washington) allows himself to be captured in order to escape a team of mercenaries hired to prevent him from buying a file detailing the names of CIA's dirty agents. The safe house is compromised and Weston and Frost are the only survivors. To make things worse, the team's employer is inside the agency and has framed Weston for a crime he did not commit. The only chance to save Frost and clear his name is to reach the second safe house, many miles aways, all while dodging Vargas and his men as well as the CIA itself.

Joel Kinnaman And Vera Farmiga Join Safe House

The cast of AMC's The Killing is making a killing today.
Hot on the heels of Heat Vision's exclusive news that Killing star Mireille Enos is in talks to join Paramount's World War Z as Brad Pitt's wife, we can report that co-star Joel Kinnaman is joining the Universal thriller Safe House, starring Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds.
Swedish actor Kinnaman is reteaming with director Daniel Espinosa, who helmed Kinnaman's breakout film Easy Money/Snabba Cash.
Safe House follows the only surviving agent of an attack on a CIA safe house (Reynolds) as he tries to transport a lethal prisoner (Washington) to a second destination before being taken out by violent forces that want them both dead.
In a key role, Kinnaman is playing a man who operates a safe house where Reynolds and Washington show up.
The script was written by David Guggenheim, an Us Weekly editor who worked nights on the story and whose spec landed him a new career as a hot Hollywood scribe. Terry George did a polish.

EXCLUSIVE: Universal Pictures has set Vera Farmiga to star with Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds in Safe House, the Daniel Espinosa-directed drama. Production is already under way, with Reynolds playing a young agent assigned to escort a dangerous criminal to safety after they are attacked at a safe house. Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, Robert Patrick and Liam Cunningham will also star in the drama. Scott Stuber is producing and Intrepid Pictures' Trevor Macy and Marc D. Evans are exec producers. Denzel Washington always puts up awesome performances on screen & this won't be the exception. It's pretty good that they've cast him opposite Ryan Reynolds who sometimes plays antagonistic roles, so we'll see how this plays out.
