Sam Raimi to reboot The Grudge

Movie just got delayed to January 2020:

Sony Bumps 'Grudge' Reboot Out of Prime Summer 2019 Release, Moves to Next Year

Unpopular opinion: the Grudge series has one of the dumbest premises ever conceived and those ghosts are the most petty, overly-vindictive villains I've seen. This goes for both versions, not just the American version. THOSE PEOPLE NEVER DID ANYTHING TO YOU! WHY ARE YOU PUTTING DEATH CURSES ON THEM?!? And don't tell me it's a Japanese culture thing. It's not like The Ring/Ringu where Samara/Sadako's an eldritch abomination so she was just BORN evil; this was a family who's patriarch murdered them and then himself out of jealous rage and yet ALL the ghost are the one's cursing and killing people. Wouldn't it make more sense for JUST the husband's ghost to be the one doing that and the other 2 are trying to help the victims or just want to be avenged and set free? But noooo, anyone who just happens to visit the house is a target just BECAUSE. This entire franchise is one big idiot plot, I swear to God.

Too many high-profile horror movies this year for the Grudge to compete. I think Child's Play would have beat it if they released on the same date,

lol i asked that also back when the first one came out but apparently it is a "japanese thing." When someone dies a ghost is a big ass deal, either they become a good luck spirit or some kinda vindictive plague.

I've always found the concept of The Grudge so stupid. "When a person... dies in the grip of a powerful rage... a curse is born."

Yeah, okay. I'm not exactly sure on the statistics, but I would bet that a fairly large contingent of the murders that occur out there are crimes of passion. Probably the majority. So then, why aren't there a bunch of weird, long-haired ghosts crawling around all of those crimes scenes, opening their eyes in spooooooooky ways?

The reboot probably cost around the amount Sony put into “Escape Room”, which was around $9 million. That movie was a decent sized success for the studio, that’s probably why they delayed “Grudge” to January 2020.

I was sort of looking forward to this, I'm intrigued. Bummer that will now have to wait for a year.

Why?!?!? This is the third or fourth attempt at this film. The original wasn't even that great. The woman was a tad creepy but was more making me laugh due to having the constant look on her face with her mouth open like she wanted to go down on a guy.

Rings was a ****ing travesty IMO. Such a sad excuse for a reboot for one of my favorite horror films. I was never the biggest fan of the original even though I remember how insanely popular it was back in the day. Given the talent behind this though I am definitely curious about it, especially with the R-rating.

Rated R huh? That piques my interest.

I'm liking what the director has said in regards to this "reboot" and the R-rating:
When asked at New York Comic Con how his “Grudge” would be different from all the previous movies in the franchise (the 2004 movie spawned two sequels), Pesce promised Sony’s openness to an R rating would result in the most disturbing “Grudge” yet. “The movie’s way more ***** up,” the director said. “Not that the wave of J-Horror in the early 2000s wasn’t ***** up — but this is really ***** up.”
‘The Grudge’ Director Nicolas Pesce Says 2020 Film ‘Way More F*cked Up’ Than J-Horror

I'm loving the posters and really enjoyed The Eyes of my Mother. I'm game.

This actually looks like it could be very good and different enough from the original to justify its existence. I’m intrigued.

Those screechy, discordant strings and clicking sounds used in almost all recent horror film trailers, though, can go burn in the deepest level of Hell. They’re just put in there to make you go, “Ooooh, scaaarrryy!

They’re not scary, just ******* annoying.

I kind of feel the opposite. I watched the trailer for the first one again (American version) and, visually, thought how well they sold it. It was so unique at the time.

This one looks like every other horror film, and the visuals are so much more bland than the first. They both even end on the same shower hand visual. I mean, if you’re going to do it again, give a twist to it. It’s the exact same shot, just blander.

I didn't love the trailer either, but honestly I'm still very much liking what I'm seeing. I'm glad to see Cho is the lead in this, and some of the horror imagery was definitely effective. I'm really curious to see what Pesce does here given what he has already done with such a bold and ambitious little indie horror movie like The Eyes of My Mother. This trailer doesn't really showcase any of that talent though.

Trailer was rather generic but some cool visuals that are pulling me in, aside from Pesce being the one directing.

Hmm. This doesn't look very intriguing. The 2000s American film, looked more spooky and interesting compare to this.

Detectives going on calls by themselves. Smart.
