Scientists cure cancer, but no one takes notice

Chris Rock: There ain't no money in the cure. The money is in the medicine. The government ain't nothing but a bunch of drug dealers on the comeback!:awesome:

The world is overpopulated...so I WILL be the guy to say it...there should not be a cure for cancer anytime soon. Sorry. We have a serious population problem on our hands people. While humans still have land to spread out on...they can only do so by taking away other species homes and food supplies. Sorry to say, but we are just mostly *******s to this planet.

Or... we could cure cancer and then colonize the oceans?

Seemed like a better solution than watching our species die by the millions.

:ff: :ff: :ff:

I think this factors into medical research/funding/approval and policy decisions. Not only are we killing more people, but we are taking their lunch money while we do it. Its just the peasants so no one but them cares anyway.

Right on man! If I ever get cancer I'll totally opt for chemo and if the cancer doesn't go into remission I'll happily die painfully because the world is overpopulated!

lmao with that kind of mentality you may as well just off yourself.

In all honesty, I think there's been a cure for cancer for years. We'll just never know... because too much money is being made on treatment. And yes, that's a conspiracy theory... one that I happen to take seriously.

Agreed. Just like there's too much money being made on the treatment of polio, malaria, smallpox for their cures to be released.

Yes, cancer treatment is a multibillion dollar industry.

But...if a company did find the cure, they would have all those billions upon billions all to themselves. Their investors would be seeing ridiculous returns as every person on the planet would be throwing money at them, whether they had cancer, or were just afraid of getting it.

With the good will and publicity they'd instantly build up, they could probably do whatever they wanted for the next hundred years, no matter how crazy or unethical, and people would still say "...yeah...but they cured cancer!" :p

Yeah.

I didn't understand a word of that.

If it was really legit it would have found its way into the Nature journal, which is where the big time is. People just don't submit their papers to any journal willy-nilly. The more famous and influential journal, the more clout you'll have the next time it comes to renew your grant (ie, more moolah in it for you). It is in every scientist's interest to get their work into the big-time journals.

I've NEVER heard of "Science Translational Medicine," although I have heard of Science, so I presume that this journal is a subset of the main Science journal.

If it was that important, it at least would have been in Science, not a subset of it. :oldrazz: And if it was as important as people claim it is, it would be in Nature. :oldrazz:

God I hate people. Don't these *******s make enough f***ing money already? They nickel & dime us for everything else.

[is summoned by biologist-signal]

I stopped reading at "natural cancer fighting human cell, the mitochondria" because that is COMPLETELY NOT TRUE.

Mitochondria is not a cell, it's a organelle inside every cell - it's how the cell produces energy to do...everything. They are always activated.

No wonder why they can't get anyone to fund their "cancer cure," because all the other scientists are laughing them back into their basements. :funny: Or if they misspoke, surely an official educational institution could hire some copywriters that didn't spew misinformation like that so people could maybe take them seriously. :oldrazz:
I noticed that too. This is high-school level bio, people.
Besides, there's a major grammatical error.
The drug is widely available and the technique is easy to use, why the major drug companies are not involved?
Let me fix that to ye best of my ability.

First off, please don't use my arguments when you're not smart enough to pull them off.

Second, **** the planet. Don't be stupid. We're not some kind of blight on the world, we're just another species doing our thing.

C, this isn't a cure for cancer. There's too much wrong with the article and I haven't seen anything reported anywhere else.

Also, cancer kills things too slowly for it to make a difference in any population.

The vast majority of people who get cancer are past child-bearing age, so they will have already blighted the planet with their progeny. :oldrazz:

Also cancer victims probably end up using more resources than they would if they were healthy.
In treating them, yes. And if we let them die a painful death, it's a slippery slope to justify withholding other "treatments" in the name of saving the planet. I can barely see without my glasses, without them I'd probably get run over by a car in swift fashion. So should my glasses be taken away from me because I'm not fit enough to survive on a planet where only the fittest should survive? :oldrazz:

they need to stop cancer research and start discovering more ways to not damage/repair DNA. testing bred to be cancer prone rats isn't going to get anyone anywhere.

What are you referring to? DNA gets damaged all the time, including when you're not doing anything at all besides sitting around letting your cells divide. DNA can break during the synthesis of a new strand. :oldrazz:

My lab is doing research on DNA repair and it's really mind-bogglingly complicated. You'd think it'd be easy, but nooooo.

I'm intrigued by your knowledge of DNA. Do you think we'd come closer to a cure for HIV/AIDS being that cancer will seem to never be cured? Do you think more research should be towards that subject?

I think South Park settled this debate already.
