Scorsese hints at De Niro mafia pic

i hope not. i understand that de niro tried a new genre, but he failed..

I am probably in the minority, but enough with the mob movies... it gets old after a while. He's an older actor and can't quite carry a movie anymore. It's not a genre thing, because he hasn't stuck to any genre as of late. His last four movies have been flops because of bad scripts (Righteous Kill), misguided efforts (Stardust... I don't know what he was thinking with that one but it's an attempt), and a couple more flops for reasons far beyond himself. If it's a mob movie. maybe as a supporting character in the "Godfather" type role where his screen time is discrete and used selectively, but not as the main guy any more. But he can do the same thing in any other genre. I just don't think he is a leading man any more.

When Pacino isn't screaming at the top of his lungs, he's amazing. Unfortunately that's mostly all he does nowadays. In the 70's, when he could actually be subtle, he was fascinating. There's a quietness he brings to Michael Corleone, so that when he does explode in anger it actually means something,

I Heard you Paint Houses, perhaps?

This is the first one that sprung to mind, there is also the possibility that it could be "The Winter of Frankie Machine" as that seems to be going nowhere with Mann.

I think the over the top nature of Scarface is intentional. You can't expect a story like that and not expect something that's out there. Maybe it could have went in a more serious route, but for what it was, I liked it.

The over the top nature is reflective of the excesses of the 80's, the whole movie is one giant shot at the grotesque, tacky greed of the era.

.... I dont have the tiem right now to go through why you are a complete moron and why Scarface is damn fine film, but meh, heres an article that kind of gets at why you are so shockingly wrong
It would nice if someone calling other people morons could actually spell time correctly.

Anyhow, why is he a moron? Because he didn't like Scarface?:doh:
Its his opinion and it is one I happen to share. Scarface isn't a bad film but I don't understand the universal praise it gets. To me it is nowhere near other classics of the same genre such as The Godfather I and II or the Goodfellas.

Scarface is 1. Indicative of it's era as has been previously stated. 2. It's pretty much a retelling of MacBeth and no one can accuse Shakespeare of being realistic or understated.

All in all I think Scarface is a great film.

Me too. Few people understand that Scarface is more parody of gangster and mobster films than the deconstruction of the genre that was popular at the time. It's imo a truly misunderstood film as many fans of the film don't even understand that either.

That because it's not like the Godfather films or Goodfellas. This film isn't a deconstruction of Mafia films or an intimate look into them. It was more or less a satire of the genre. While those films took a serious look into the mafia, Scarface was an over-the-top parody of mobsters films in which the center of this film wasn't heart, but rather greed. Hence, the chainsaw scene, and "The world is yours".

How in God's name is scarface a satire or a parody?
I understand and admit that it did have a few satirical elements here and there but how does that qualify it as a parody? Many films have their fair share of satirical elements but that doesn't make them parodies.

Also qualifying Scarface as a parody should also qualify the goodfellas as a parody because essentially they both cover very similar themes...including greed (while adding a touch of humor) . Yet, I find goodfellas to be infinitely better

How isn't it a satire? As I previously said, it was a satire because it lampooned the era of the 80s while also being over the top. Greed was shown as a positive quality than a negative one. Tony Montana's tragic flaw in the film ended up to be compassion, [BLACKOUT]as he refused to kill who needed to because he didn't want to harm children[/BLACKOUT]. The film doesn't really take itself seriously as shown by the exessive violence, the often bright cinematography of Miami (though it was film in California), and it was a parody of some of the era's ideals that was believed to be achieved in order to live the American Dream (some beliefs that still stand today).

I never said Goodfellas wasn't better than Scarface. While Goodfellas is satirical too, it has more deconstructive elements and more heart (along with more developed characters) than Scarface. That's why Goodfellas is a much better film than Scarface
