Batman is taken back to World War II, where he fights the Nazis on D-Day alongside Sgt. Rock and the Easy Company. When the battle seems to be going against their favor, G.I. Robot comes in to save the day, but before they can celebrate, he saves a young soldier who step in a landmine, destroying itself on the teaser. Though I could see what they were going for, I was almost waiting for someone to ask: "Can't we just rebuild him?". Oh, and on that end: See, Avengers? THIS is how you handle the Nazis! THIS is how it's done! YEAHHH!!!
In the main adventure, Black Mask and his False-Face Society take control of the army of Bat-Robots (complete with Batman's cheesy one-liners) while Batman is away in space with Green Arrow, and use them to loot the city. After Batman discovers this, he goes after him, only to be beaten by the robots, and saved at the end by Ace the Bat-Hound and Proto, a prototype Bat-Robot that has A.I. and good-natured, but is too big and clumsy. Proto wants to battle crime, and struggles with its size, as Black Mask plans on using the robots to destroy half of Gotham and rule the other half. Proto tracks Black Mask down, and foils the robots with Batman and Ace, and take down the final one. After Black Mask is arrested, Batman sends Proto to fight crime in outer space.
Yeah...I'm not really feeling this one. I appreciate some of the nods to Iron Giant, and Adam West is always a blast, but the episode really screamed "Buy this toy, kids!". I realize the producers were probably trying their best, but there wasn't a lot of humor, and Proto did kinda redeemed himself too fast. Black Mask's voice was also too wimpy. John DiMaggio has great range, and they really should have gone with his Hammerhead voice from The Spectacular Spider-Man. It would have added some toughness to him, and a fitting "Joisey" accent to him.
It wasn't too bad, though. I did find the Proto/Ace friendship cute. And Black Mask's streak of being a horrible boss continues, if you've seen his previous animated appearances.
8/10
NEXT WEEK:
Teaser: TBA. Then, when an alien invasion threatens Earth, Batman, Plastic Man, and the Freedom Fighters, led by Uncle Sam, race to outer space to stop them. But when they become outnumbered, it is up to Plastic Man to save the day...with patriotism!
The Main story was a Total DUD!!!
Nothing about I liked.
Why Batman and Green Arrow in space fighting an Alien Invasion?
Makes more sense to use a GL or have a Captain Comet appearance.
I have never liked when the batmobile transforms around Batman to form
a BattleBot.
I like Ace but seeing him flying with his own jet-powered cape glider in
just plain silly.
Black Mask seem totally out of character and didn't care for his voice.
I know they do alot of silly things on this show.
Most of the time it works but for me this wasn't one of those times.
'D+'
Thankfully the opener was good.
Sgt Rock & Easy Co invade the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.
GI Robot and Batman are along to kick some Nazi Butt.
Really? You haven't seen much from this show, have you. It makes sense to have Green Arrow along with Batman. After all, GA is Batman's equivalent, and if Batman can fly into space, so can Arrow. Plus, they've been in space before in "The Super-Batman of Planet X".
And trust me, Ace having that jet-glider is far from the silliest stuff this show has ever done.
I agree that the main story was boring. But to criticize the show's ridiculousness is, well, ridiculous.
Because Brave and Bold era is about Batman and others being International crime fighters, that also expands to space. This isn't about early years Batman or anything Gotham-only. This is about Batman doing what he does best, fight crime globally.
I enjoyed this episode for it's humour, and i was glad it had a optimistic happy ending aswell.
I was sure they were going to have Proto sacrifice himself at the end.
Have you noticed how some episodes are sad? Like the Doom Patrol?
I liked Proto, but thought the episode was OK.
