House of the Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 - "The Red Dragon and the Gold"

Loved this episode. They really delivered with the dragon combat. Obviously sad to see that exit happen, but it was done pretty perfectly.

I'm excited to see the Riverlands plot develop more next week, and to see how TGC adapts his performance post-accident.

Also - PLEASE can we get an acknowledgement of Dreamfyre? It seems obvious to mention her now - show them pressuring Heleana to ride now that one of their main dragons is wounded!

That dragon combat was something else, hot damn. They've come quite a way since GoT.

Unlike ASOIAF, I have not read this source material and don't really remember much of anything when they talked about this era in those books, and I don't intend to spoil myself, so watching this blind not knowing where it's going...I will just say it's really frustrating watching this team of absolute losers keep getting the upper hand, and I'm really hoping that changes soon.

Sorry to say though, Daemon's really starting to bore me. I find myself tuning out during his scenes now the way I did with Bran's in GoT. Always happy to see Milly, though!

Poor Sunfyre. Got stuck with a ****head drunk driver. Though this episode did make me feel a little sad for Aegon. There was a cute moment between him and Sunfyre when they were getting ready where Sunfyre sort of nudged/hugged him and Aegon seemed genuinely happy to be with him. If his entire family didn’t hate each other’s guts so much, he might’ve had a chance at being a decent person.

I also haven’t read the books but I read about Targaryen history a while ago so I do know about much of what is about to happen. I don’t think Alys Rivers/Daemon plot was in the books so I’m really curious to see how that develops.

I'd love to see that too. They seem to be giving Helaena slightly more to do in the show than in the book but we could definitely use some Dreamfyre, who I think had a cameo in the first season in the dragonpit when Aemond goes down further into the pit to explore when he's a kid (after the pig prank).

What happened to Sunfyre upset me almost as much as what happened to Meleys and Rhaenys. The animators did a great job at conveying Sunfyre's emotions when Aegon came to the pit to get him.

He looked so happy and excited as he probably hadn't even seen Aegon in quite some time for obvious reasons (Aegon being crowned king, spending time in brothels and child fighting pits, etc.). Since he's a younger dragon with no battle experience, he probably thought that they were just going out for a nice ride. Aegon looked genuinely happy to see Sunfyre as well because his dragon was the only one that showed him any kind of affection.

It also makes me hate Aemond more that he was perfectly willing to take out Sunfyre as collateral damage too.

Well, to be fair the castle was on a cliff so I'd say it was the cliff rather than the castle that obscured Vhagar. It of course required quite the timing to pop up like that though.

It's one of those things that will just drive you crazy the more you think about it. Also to that degree, when Vhagar was grounded in that clip that Kane posted, Rhaenys had all the time in the world to circle back around and rain fire on Vhagar while she was trying to take flight. It at the very least could have killed Aemond in that moment. Often, writing sacrifices logic for drama but in the end it doesn't make the scene any less great.

Yes, there is some writing convenience going on, although we do see Rhaenys ponder whether she should go back or not so there is at least a reason for why it took some time turning back.

I think a big factor in tipping the scale whether something is deemed fine or annoying is the quality of the context. If it's in a good episode (or movie) one can more easily look past smaller issues, while a bad context rather manages to highlight even smaller problems because the bigger ones have already made you annoyed.
