Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 7 "Those Old Scientists" (Spoiler Thread)

Many agree with you. Over at TrekBBS, “Those Old Scientists” scored an impressive number of 10s (out of 10); and the other rankings were mostly 9s and 8s. But judging from the comments, it seems most folks there are fans of both shows. (It is a Trek board, after all.) So it’s not too surprising that they’d take special delight in this crossover. And perhaps, therefore, being a True Trekker™ — knowledgeable across a variety of Trek media and genres — is kind of prerequisite for “getting” and appreciating what this episode was aiming for.

I know SNW well enough; but (as mentioned) I’m unfamiliar with Lower Decks.

Since I hadn’t seen any promos, I wasn’t sure if SNW was going to do a "conventional musical" or a so-called "diegetic musical" (staged performances interwoven within a more-or-less realistic narrative — e.g., A Star is Born [2018]). So I hedged my bets with quotations marks.

Honestly, its the episode is a lot like Lower Decks itself. It does throw some specific references (That is an oddly specific reference), but I feel you can enjoy the gist of the episode without getting the references. They make a bunch of jokes that work, but also make a lot more sense if you are aware of Lower Decks, and specifically the criticisms of Lower Decks. At the core, it is about time traveling and meeting your heroes, which is why it took a few serious turns. And in that aspect, it shares some themes with Trials and Tribble-ations.

After watching "Those Old Scientists" episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds/Lower Decks crossover and totally loved it, it made me think of other Star Trek crossovers I want to see next:

5) Star Trek Prodigy and Star Trek: Lower Decks (Two misfit crews meeting up, what's the worst that could happen?! Lol).

4) Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: Discovery (Pre Federation meets the Reformed Federation, a no brainier combo I think).

3) Star Trek: Discovery and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (Be nice for Spock and Burnham to have closure).

2) Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Enterprise (Now we know how much a fanboy Pike is with Archer, be nice for those crews to meet. Also nice for Archer to know that the name Enterprise will carry on after his days).

Honourable Mentions (if Star Trek: Legacy ever becomes a thing!!!):

*Star Trek: Legacy and Star Trek: Prodigy (be great to see Seven meet other people mentored by Janeway).

*Star Trek: Legacy and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine/Voyager (like with Star Trek: Picard Season 3 carry on the legacy (pun intended lol) of USS Titan A/Enterprise G meeting past crews, they did TNG in Season 3 of Picard so why not do DS9/Voyager in there Season One!!!

*Star Trek: Legacy and Star Trek: Enterprise (Why not have the first Enterprise meeting the newest Enterprise. Live up to the name of Star Trek: Legacy why not!!!).

*Star Trek Long Trek: Section 31 and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Bashir and Garak) Imagine Garak and Georgiou plotting and planning with Bashir trying to keep the Starfleet values alive in this darker side of the Trek Universe.

1) Star Trek: The Next Generation/Deep Space Nine/Voyager (It's about time this finally happened don't you think?!).

Which ones you want to see?

If the voice actors didn't look like their animated counterparts (and voice actors often do not look anything like the characters they're playing) would they have had to use different actors for live action?

Honestly have no idea if it would have happened.

My guess is that there were some pretty generic visual guidelines that the voice actors were hired to meet, with the character designs tweaked later to really look like the actors, just in case a live-action crossover could be arranged in the future.

They might have even just had promotional appearances in mind, such as posters or talk show appearances. Wreck-It Ralph did that with Calhoun at least, and could have with the rest of the main cast.
