Marvel Publisher Dan Buckley took the stage at Discovery Times Square to reveal an anticipated announcement celebrating the 75th anniversary of Marvel Comics.

"It's been an evolution here. We segued into the big things. Stan, Jack Kirby, these guys brought us the modern Marvel Universe and that still pretty much what we have today, " Buckley spoke. "The ride has been interesting. We saw the demise of the newsstand and the rise of the hobby shop. We saw a boom and a bust and a renaissance. The stories today are seen all around the world. One announcement will be how we extend the celebration beyond these halls, and one about how we will launch the next 75 years."

With that, a trailer for a television special titled Marvel: From Pulp to Pop aired. The one-hour special will be hosted by Emily VanCamp, star of the television series Revenge, who also played Sharon Carter (aka "Agent 13") in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The documentary will air November 4 at 9:00 p.m. ET on ABC.

On to what is launching the next 75 years, the president of Marvel talked about "Avengers NOW!" Then he said "let's look backwards to see how we can extend the excitement beyond the publishing world to see what's next?"

Marvel Super Heroes: Secret Wars was the next slide, and Buckley said a creator pitched something to them a few years ago. Secret Wars by Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic will launch in May 2015, and will pick up immediately after the conclusion of Hickman's "Time Runs Out" saga in New Avengers and Avengers. Buckley said that Hickman actually pitched this story before he even began his run with the Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and everything has lead to that. "We'll be extending this in a year-long campaign across digital and merchandising and retail partners," he said.

The next presenters talked about how partners like Hasbro, Hot Topic, and Upper Deck will bring new merchandise to tie into the story. The digital group will also support in "so many awesome ways I can't tell you yet," said Marvel's Ryan Penagos, the company's Executive Editorial Director for its digital media.

Following up on their announcement of a new Secret Wars by the creative team of Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribic launching in May of 2015, Marvel gave out the first details to USA Today.

Marvel Senior VP of Publishing Tom Brevoort called Marvel Super Heroes: Secret Wars "overwhelming huge," describing it as the "biggest thing" Marvel's ever done. The long-time Marvel editor went on to state that this new Secret Wars has been on the drawing board as far back as 2012 when Hickman took over the Avengers and New Avengers titles.

An image accompanying the article, painted by Alex Ross, depicts multiple versions of Marvel's top heroes -- Captain Americas, Thors and Iron Men -- as well as other notable heroes as well as some relative unknowns -- but Brevoort says none are new or random. Click above for a large but somewhat scaled own version of the image, or click here to see an even larger super-sized version of the image.

"However massive you think this is," Brevoort says," let me assure you it is bigger than that. It's by far the craziest thing I've dealt with."

Of all the various prominent and obscure characters in this image by Ross, it's certain absences that are curious. There is no X-Men characters, no mutants even, as well as no members of the Fantastic Four or Namor as well -- all characters whose movie rights are not currently owned by Marvel. The one characters whose movie rights are held outside of Marvel who appears here is Spider-Man -- albiet not the most well known Spider-Man, Peter Parker, but Ultimate Spider-Man, Miles Morales.

Of further note, of the 33 characters depicted, only six are women; three of which are variations of the Wasp. Prominent female superheroes such as Black Widow, She-Hulk, Scarlet Witch, Storm, Jean Grey, Rogue and the Invisible Woman are all absent.

Usually skip crossovers but Esad Ribic is drawing this so I'm in. :)

Nope. Though I'm sure there'll be some beautiful splash pages. I hope this event stays contained and I can still read and enjoy some of the books I dig right now.

Wish the roster was a bit more limited. Like the original Secret Wars.
Could be cool though.

Marvel is heading down that rabbit hole DC already did with this kind of stuff. Incursions.....now past versions of the 616 heroes returning to fight current 616 heroes. Bleeding Cool called it Earth 1, Earth 2 stuff, certainly seems like it.

I think it's a very bad idea.

I'll worry about whether Marvel is rebooting when Marvel actually announces they're rebooting. People speculate that there's gonna be a reboot every single time a new event is announced at this point.

While the image is likely going to a future wallpaper of mine, I don't know what to think of this. The original Secret Wars is great, but event after event after event has caused me to buy comics less and less due to my wallet not being able to catch up not including everything else I like to waste my money on. Really cool to see Miles Morales on there though, please don't be a reboot. You're not DC, Marvel.

Well only since Time Runs Out was announced. You have to admit that Marvel is painting themselves in a corner with all these sweeping changes to the characters.

Perhaps everyone in the 616 will make a deal with Mephisto...? :o

At this point I honestly wouldn't mind if they rebooted the whole MU. Getting so convoluted that a fresh start wouldn't be bad.

They just need to streamline the current books instead of doing a whole reboot. No more dozen X books alongside a dozen Spiderman books with two dozen avengers teams with everyone crossing over between year long events which merge into each other.

Streamline it so it's easier to get straight then work on events.

Yeah please, get rid of the double shipping too! It kinda sucks to be a fan of Spider-Man, X-Men, and Avengers while being a fan of other titles too, as in you won't be able to afford it all!

If it was more streamlined, with less status quo changes all the time, I would definitely start buying some comics

I think for any given group or characters they should have them in a maximum of three comics at a time, not including one-shots. So if Spider-man is in his own book and the Avengers then he can only be used in one other one. Wolverine can only be in his own book, avengers and one other unless he leaves one of them for the duration.

The teams books should follow suit. The X-Teams should be maxed at 3, same with Avengers and such.

I have no problem with anything Marvel's been doing except for the occasional $5 issues.

Yeah, I don't really buy anything that I'm not actually enjoying. Maybe that's how I seem to be doing a lot better with Marvel's current output than most others. I buy maybe 7 or 8 Marvel titles a month, plus whatever events seem interesting, and most of my pull list is indies at this point.

no Fantastic Four, no real Spiderman = no interest

Only thing of interest is I see Thor is back as Thor and Captain America appears to be back to himself.

Or those are alternate reality versions. The new Thor and FalCap are both in the promo art as well.

Is that American Dream and DarkDevil from the MC2 universe?

If so that is awesome and I hope Mayday Parker is involved too!
