Anyway, my choices for the team will hopefully solve the problems that people had with the first film but I will also explain how to solve some of the problems people will think my selections might have.
So the way I interpret the end of the film there are only four members of the team left; Rick Flagg Jr, Deadshot, Killer Croc and Captain Boomerang. Katana is an invitee so isn't a permanent member. Harley Quinn escaped with the Joker and I don't believe either of them will play a role in a Suicide Squad sequel. I think they were here to bolster a little known team and will now be used in the Batman solo. Now powerless I don't expect to see anything to do with the Enchantress in the next film. And obviously El Diablo and Slipknot are dead.but to me there's still room to recruit and still room to shuffle what was left of the squad.
The first problem my choices tackle are the lack of meta-humans. We, the audience, were told we'd see a team of meta-humans. The government officials were told the same thing. But it isn't what we get. I understand that from Waller's perspective Enchantress was going to be in the squad and that Katana's sword is supernatural so makes her semi-meta. But all the audience counts is Killer Croc and El Diablo so are rightly disappointed. So the new recruits will have four meta-humans whilst the only human, King Faraday, will be leader. By adding more meta humans it should create great visuals. Imagine the squad hiding behind a wall of Killer Frost's ice whilst Faraday and Deadshot shoot through one of Nightshade's shadow portals before leaving a gap for Croc to jump through it and take them down. Meanwhile we have Plastique leading Captain Boomerang through a building to flank them whilst Copperhead flanks them the other side. These are the only sort of visuals you can only get with having meta-humans.
Now onto each character and why. I'll start with King Faraday. Now don't get me wrong I enjoyed Rick Flagg and the story the made for him. It showed off Waller's manipulative nature and made the mission more personal for him which is always good for story telling. But there are two reasons I would have King Faraday replace him. Without the personal connection he may become stake and the way they built him in the first film was he was there to control Enchantress, not that he was the best man for the job. Out of respect I would have Flagg die early on in the film and they have to search for a replacement. He leads a small squad made up of himself, Deadshot, Killer Croc and Savant on a mission early on to capture Killer Frost but he dies trying to save Savsnt whose forgetfulness leads to his death anyway. They discuss a few options for leadership of the squad with Nathaniel Adams and Benjamin Lockwood being mentioned. They choose King Faraday due to his wealth of experience and due to his partner Nightshade being a meta human herself. I made the decision for King Faraday because another problem I had with the first film was the lack of a relationship between Flagg and Katana. Yes they were both good guys but if you saw them stood together you wouldn't think it was them against the rest. Katana was also such a boring character so hopefully having Nighshade introduced, who has an established friendship, will mean they have development throughout the film. This removes the potential of Flagg becoming boring, gives him a respectful exit instead of between films and pleases those who wanted him gone.
The next character in the team is Killer Frost. As mentioned she is captured early on in the film by a small squad sent by Waller to bring her in. Due to her being the cause of Flagg's death Deadshot and Croc, whose respect for Flagg grew as he led them on the smaller missions, there is some antagonism between the duo and Frost. She is often the new cause of conflict in the group and gets on best with Copperhead due to his sneaky nature and begins to formulate an escape plan with him. She'll be a big powerhouse on the team like El Diablo but does not care about killing kids.
The next is Plastique, homage to the team from the Justice League Unlimited episode. She is chosen to join due to her military experience having been in the army for years prior to leaving and developing abilities that allow her to make things explode sections after touching them. She is said to having been on a mission with Flagg, Deadshot and Boomerang a few months prior so already has a positive relationship. I think this will benefit the film as it will make it different from the first where none of the characters knew each other.
The last recruit is Copperhead. A friend of Killer Croc's who abandoned him one time which led to Croc's capture by Batman. This means that he is hated by Croc. He is befriended by Frost who creates a plan of escape hearing of the people such as Slipknot, Havana and Blackstar.
Hopefully this team will solve some of the problems in the first film and I've properly explained my reasoning for the change of leadership.
The way I see things going for the first act is another mission briefing by Waller and Flagg. There would be some necessary exposition. Explain that a smaller mission calls for a smaller squad and that Deadshot and Croc have been doing more missions since Midway and have developed a good working relationship. Deadshot is long range projectile, Croc up close muscle. It also explains that this is Savant's first outing and mentions his forgetfulness. The team roles out to capture Killer Frost. On the way Deadshot and Croc joke about Boomer and how they are able to block out his daily screams. Flagg says they've learnt he is rubbish in smaller groups as he gets cockiest, he's easier to control in big groups as there are more people for him to be afraid of. As they reach where Killer Frost is hiding we see she has made the place her own with frozen hostages acting as deterrents of a full on attack. They battle with Frost who manages to kill Flagg as he tries to rescue Savant from a pit of ice spikes. They manage to capture Frost but Savant dies after Frost persuaded him to let her go and she kills him in an escape attempt. But Deadshot and Flagg recapture her and bring her to Belle Reve. When the return to their cells they walk past Boomer's cell and taunt him. In their cells we see even more luxuries reinforcing the idea that they've been on successful missions and their relationship has been improved.
It is at this point we see the rise of the films villainous force. And Waller and her team begin their hunt for a new leader. A few names are thrown about but they leave undecided hoping to test out the suggestions first. After an alert is made that the Suicide Squad is needed we see Waller make a call to King Faraday. They say they chose him for his experience but he ends the phone call saying "don't worry, I'll bring her."
It is at this point we see Copperhead and Killer Frost in a room together being prepped with their explosive devices. They are brought into a room where we see Deadshot and Croc all geared up and ready to go. Deadshot and Croc are not happy to see Frost so soon. Croc notices Copperhead and gets angrier. They are held back by guards until Faraday walks in and orders silence. Deadshot shows the same lack of respect to Faraday that he first showed Flagg and taunts his old age. Faraday tells him he understands they had grown close to Flagg but that is no reason for the teenage rebellious attitude against the new step-dad. He also warns that for big groups like this Flagg had Katana to watch his back. Faraday states he has his own. Much better and much more devoted. This is when Nightshade opens a portal behind Deadshot, pulls him through and pushes him out behind Frost and Copperhead. Deadshot and Croc are impressed and get back into line as Frost and Copperhead are geared up. Croc points out that Flagg could have handled a team this size on his own. Faraday points to the last two who walk in and they hear Boomer before they see him. He walks in very cocky and immediately flirts with Frost and Nightshade. He points out that the woman behind is boring. At that moment we are introduced to Plastique who walks up to Croc and Deadshot and gives a hug hello and her commiserations about Flagg. They leave the building and get on the chopper and head to where they are needed.
