Sony Pictures Taps ‘Iron Man 3′ Helmer Shane Black To Direct ‘The Destroyer’
Mike Fleming Jr said:
EXCLUSIVE:
Sony Pictures has set Iron Man 3 helmer Shane Black to direct The Destroyer, Fight Club scribe Jim Uhls’ scripted adaptation of the adventure book series by Warren Murphy that will give framed New Jersey cop Remo Williams another shot at a movie franchise. Uhls wrote the script with James Mullaney, who co-authored books in the series and became the sole writer of The Destroyer series until it ended in 2008. The film will be produced by Charles Roven, Steven Chasman, and Andy Horwitz. Michael De Luca and Lauren Abrahams will oversee for Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Williams was a Newark cop until he was framed, sentenced to death, then resurrected following a botched execution. He is given a second lease on life serving in the enforcement arm of the clandestine U.S. government agency CURE. Williams teams with the Asian assassin Chiun and together they clean up and eliminate those who oppose America’s interests. The book combined old-school suspense and Eastern mysticism, and slick, violent capers that lend themselves to humor, which has always been in Black’s wheelhouse.

Black, who started his career writing phenomenally successful spec scripts that included Lethal Weapon, became a director with the Robert Downey Jr-starrer Kiss, Kiss, Bang Bang, and most recently reunited with Downey to direct Iron Man 3, which grossed $1.25 billion worldwide and bolstered Marvel’s highest flying franchise outside of The Avengers. Black is attached to co-write and direct Doc Savage for Sony, but his collaborators feel he has an ideal take for Remo Williams, the rough and tumble character who first surfaced in the 1985 movie that starred Fred Ward (The Right Stuff astronaut who opened the hatch too early and sunk his spacecraft).

“Shane has been a fan of the original Destroyer book series since its inception and he has an incredible vision for this film,” said Atlas Entertainment’s Roven, who presided over the Dark Knight franchise and Man Of Steel and is currently producing Batman V. Superman. “[We] couldn’t be more fortunate to be working with this talented director on this material. The narrative Jim and James have created is incredibly rich and while it’s a story rooted in adventure, it is also very much character driven.”

Said Columbia Pictures production president De Luca: “The Destroyer is a two-fisted classic and deserves no less than the genius of Shane Black. “We couldn’t be more excited about his vision for this character.”

Black is represented by WME and David Greenblatt of GreenLit Creative. Uhls is represented by Paradigm and Anonymous Content. Mullaney is also repped by Greenblatt.

they just won't be able to translate the physical impossibilities of the fighting art of Sinanju without resorting it to looking like some form of typical martial arts or some form of cheesy-looking CGI to help pass it off... I don't care if Black's been a fan of the Destroyer since the beginning, I'm STILL highly skeptical of it all...

Damn, Shane Black is making Guillermo Del Toro look like Terrence Malick.

Used to have all the Destroyer books but sold them on ebay for a ton of $$$

Haha, I had no idea these were books. I just remember seeing that cover in a video store and thinking what a joke it looked like. I almost thought it was a spoof, sort of like Loaded Weapon 1. Is it good? Or so bad its good?

It's not a masterpiece, but I think it's entertaining.

Shane Black is attached to direct like a dozen projects right now.

What I want to know...which one will actually come out?

did you know that the son and daughter of Remo Williams have their own book series that recently started up and is written by Warren Murphy and Gerald Welch?... they're on the their third book now...

Just hurry up and make Doc Savage already!:cmad:

I love superhero movies, giant robots, monsters and all that crap, but it would be nice to see a classic action-adventure movie on the big screen once in a while:woot:

I thought he just signed up to Doc Savage.

His Nice Guys has lead actors now, I'm guessing that one's going first.

(What happened to the Doc Savage movie?)

It's postponed in favour of The Destroyer according to the article;

Four. The Nice Guys (which is supposedly filming in a couple of months), Doc Savage (which was pushed back for The Destroyer), and the Predator sequel.

Looks like all of them will.

Doubtful. He never did Death Note. Doc Savage has been kicked around for like 10 years.

The Nice Guys and Predator 4 are probably the most likely. The former has two lead actors in place and the latter is probably a necessity for Fox, since the X-Men well will dry up in a few years.

He's probably do a better job on the destroyer than Doc. I want him as far away form Doc as possible. I like his SF and action he did decades ago but I really hate what he did in IM3 and don't want that for Doc Savage who is one of my childhood heroes.

Shane Black will not give you what you want with Doc if IM3 is any indication. It may be fun for lots of folks but it won't be Doc.

As long as he does Predator 3 first (or would that be Predator 4 since there's no number after Predators?), then I'm happy.

Hmm... This is actually a perfect match of Director and subject matter to my eyes. If he can make it down and dirty, with an amazing stunt team to make and American "THE RAID" then we could have an instant classic, which IM3 notwithstanding, Black's been part of before in the past.

Oh, it's incredibly over the top, but... Damn if that film don't just sing as entertainment. It's got a couple of great action sequences actually, and the training to application stuff I find to actually be spiritually in line with actual martial arts training, in that Remo learns not specific techniques per se, but is trained to have heightened attributes which is what makes him dangerous.

Potential casting spoilers, but producer Steve Chasman is also Jason Statham's manager, producer and co-founder of their joint production company.
