Shane Black's "Doc Savage"

With the Doc Savage announcement, Im Sure Shazam was put on the back burner.
Another blow to DC films.

Black on making Doc Savage a period film:
It has to be. I’m not going to do it otherwise. And if it doesn’t happen for that reason it doesn’t happen. People say ‘Well, we have all these tie-ins we want to do with merchandise and we can’t do them if it’s 1930s, can’t you make it present day? He’ll fight Al-Qaeda.’ No! That’s not who Doc Savage is. What sets him apart is that he was the first of the Supermen. With all the attendant mythology about being trained from birth to be perfect.

At the end of the day, it all depends on how these elements are used. In the hands of a great screenwriter and director, the visual similarities should become secondary to the story being told. In this case, I have a lot of faith in Black's abilities as a director based off his work with Iron-Man 3.

You'd be right. Black's the guy to do it.

Yeah, kinda figured. :(

It'd be amazing to see, but in terms of there being an audience for it (even with The Rock), I'm skeptical. It'd probably John Carter itself to death.

Still, sucks, would have loved to see it.

Sounds like it could still happen, if they can sort out whatever legal entanglements they have. I hope it does.

Dwayne saying he and Black made a pact to work together on something is cool though, they seem like they could be a really great match.

I don't know about the John Carter comparison. The movie itself had many problems, and the marketing for it was quite poor. Also, star power/charisma/leading man, Johnson>>>>>>>>Kitsch. I think Black would make a more entertaining film that what JC turned out to be, and if you The Rock in an entertaining film money will follow.

It would be a pity if a Black/Rock Doc Savage doesn't happen.

Psh, repent! John Carter was really solid. It was just never going to do well, especially with those marketing choices.

If The Predator breaks out at the box office, then Shane Black will be able to make Doc Savage. Money is everything in Hollywood. If it doesn’t, then it most likely will stay dead.

Dude, John Carter was crap. It bombed because it sucked. I have no doubt that the director and writers are big fans of the source material but they had no clue how to make it work on the big screen. And Kitsch was lifeless in the lead role.

Boo. Booo!

It wasn't amazing or anything, but that's a solid damn film. Plenty of people into the pulpy stuff seem to like it, even if it's only a 50% critically on RT. It's just a pretty niche thing, you're either hardcore into the genre or it's going to be way too obscure for you. The public just didn't give a crap, which is understandable.

"Crap" is way harsh though.

I liked John Carter. Then again, I'm a sucker for anything pulp pretty much.

I thought John Carter was fine. Its main problem was that so many movies/stories drew influence from its source material over the years that by the time they got around to doing a faithful adaption of that, it felt totally derivative of all those other movies.

Exactly. People had seen it all before, in all of the movies that lifted stuff pretty much straight from the Carter books.

I quite liked John Carter and it didn't deserve the scorching it got, but the reason it failed was because it just wasn't great and didn't have the strongest vision behind it. It wasn't because it felt derivative, it's just its main problems just felt derivative because it wasn't executed that well.

How could those same ideas have been executed better, though? It's the ideas an concepts people had seen before, not how they pulled them off. People just didn't realize it was the other stuff ripping off Carter rather than the other way around, and couldn't be expected to because outside of nerddom the source stuff is pretty obscure.

It's not a great movie, you're right. But it's pretty decent, it's a solid action-adventure flick. They just never should have thrown that insane budget at it.

Thought this was a Doc Savage thread.

The John Carter talk was only in relation to how a Doc Savage film would fare with Joe/Jane average, but fair enough.

It's not going to be cheap

Not interested without Shane Black at the helm.
