A small slice of in-game footage.

Shenmue-3-Teaser_08-21-17.jpg

Ys Net has released the first teaser trailer for Shenmue III ahead of Gamescom 2017 in Cologne, Germany this week.

The teaser trailer is built from a “small slice” of an in-development build of the game, and provides a sneak peek at the new looks of the main characters, new characters, and the feels of Shenmue world.

Shenmue III is due out for PlayStation 4 and PC in the second half of 2018. It will be published both physically and digitally by Deep Silver.

Plus additional comments on the game and development.

Shenmue-3-Interview-Game-Watch-Spark_08-23-17.jpg

The character models featured in the recent Shenmue III teaser trailer are mostly temporary, series creator and project director Yu Suziki has confirmed.

Speaking to Game Spark, Suzuki said that the character models are largely incomplete. “Shenhua, Ryo, and the other characters are mostly temporary,” Suzuki said in response to concerns about the character models.

“Shenhua still has to be fixed up a bit.” Pointing to other characters, Suzuki said, “This is a character close to completion. This one is temporary. This one is also temporary. This one is temporary, too.”

Characters of sufficiently high quality are seemingly being made, but executive producer Hideaki Mori****a “was unable to ready them in time for this trailer.” According to Mori****a, the major milestone of signing a contract with Deep Silver tells us that development on the project is progressing with new form, but since a trailer was not released alongside the announcement, they put one together despite feeling it might be premature. Mori****a said,

“While there is little excuse, there are parts that are still lacking or parts that are not sufficient.”

Speaking to Game Watch, Suzuki also said that facial expressions have yet to be implemented.

“Facial expressions were implemented a month ago, but were temporarily removed,”

he said.
Here are some of other tidbits from the interviews, with some additional information from Famitsu:

  • Shenmue III will be a single-player-only game. Post-release downloadable content is planned, but Suzuki could not discuss its contents.

  • The voice actors for Ryo—Masaya Matsukaze in Japanese and Corey Marshall in English—have already signed on. There are a lot of voice actors Suzuki wants on board and will try to accomplish that as much as possible. However, since the previous game came out such a long time ago, some voice actors have since retired. For example, he will be holding auditions for a new voice actor for Shenhua.

  • While Shenmue used the Virtua Fighter engine and Shenmue II used the Virtua Fighter II engine for its fighting system, Shenmue III uses a new system built from scratch. Suzuki does not think that Shenmue III should be “an action game where critical command inputs are necessary.” From the beginning, Shenmue has been a game of thought where what is important is not the player’s timing input skills, but judgment. That is why a new battle engine is being made.

  • There will be a race. Suzuki also wants to include lure fishing. A system is being prepared where various people tell you about fishing spots, and you can sell the fish you catch for money. You will also be able to make money wood-chopping. As for the forklift, “everyone will be mad at me if we don’t do it,” Suzuki said. “The forklift is being prepared.”

  • For users who have not played the first two games, Suzuki wants to create a visually-based digest that introduces the story of the previous titles, but has yet to decide if this will be a video or not. He wants it to be simpler than the digest video included with Shenmue II. Since Ryo is tracing in the footsteps of his father, he will recall old things during the story, and since he can make international calls to characters from previous games, he may be reminded of when “I had that experience with this person.” Rather than relying on a single movie, Suzuki thinks it is better to scatter it across the game. Suzuki wants players new to the series to be able to enjoy it, as well as to bring a smile to the faces of returning players.

  • While he has difficulty predicting the gameplay length of Shenmue III, Suzuki said it should be about 30 hours in length.

  • While Deep Silver is the international publisher of Shenmue III, a Japanese publisher has yet to be decided. Partnering with Deep Silver stabilized the project in various aspects, including budget and promotion support. While he was originally thinking about scaling back, this led him to aim a little higher. This also slightly extended the development deadline an increased the number of developers working on the game. The game is currently in full-scale production.

  • Regarding a revival of Shenmue and Shenmue II on PlayStation 4, Suzuki notes that they are properties of Sega, so he is not in the position to comment. He understands that they are many users that want it, and thinks that they should do it if they can coordinate it with Shenmue III, as the releases can be beneficial to each other. He noted that the first two games had a high budget and invested in a lot more staff and trivial character details, which is something that cannot be done now. For that reason, he joked, if Shenmue and Shenmue II were re-released, they would be a director competitor to Shenmue III.

  • Suzuki would like to make Shenmue IV after Shenmue III, if possible. He does not think the story will be completed after Shenmue III, and has no interest in forcing it. While there are many users who want the story to be completed, he does not want to cut so many things short. He hopes to be able to complete the story within his lifetime.

  • Shenmue III will not be at Tokyo Game Show 2017. The only reason it is at Gamescom 2017 is because of the Deep Silver partnership announcement.

Plus, a holiday greeting card.

Ys Net has released a special video interview with Shenmue series creator Yu Suzuki conducted by animation producer Hiroaki Takeuchi on the production of Shenmue III titled, “Then, Now, and Tomorrow.”
The official Shenmue III holiday 2017 greeting card was also released:

Get the video interview and transcript below.

[YT]YZFPPvmr7v8[/YT]
Hiroaki Takeuchi: It’s my pleasure to be here today.
Yu Suzuki: And mine as well.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: It is a treat to sit down and have a talk with you.
Yu Suzuki: Thank you very much.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: Since that surprising announcement two and a half years ago, how have things gone overall during that time?
Yu Suzuki: Time sure has flown by. Putting the team together took quite an effort, but I feel the team we have now is a good one. The real fight starts here.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: I see. I’d like to hear your take on these past two years working on the game development and team staffing, and if anything has gone particularly well or rather not so well.
Yu Suzuki: Sure. Using Unreal Engine 4 has been a first for me, but it allowed for more conventional techniques than I expected, which in turn also brought with it completely new efficiencies. Along with those two points, it has allowed us to bring the graphics quality past what I had first envisioned.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: I have also been keeping a close eye on how the graphics look, and they get better every time I come to check. Do you feel they are fitting in more with what you had imagined?
Yu Suzuki: Yes, the graphics are certainly improved over what I had in mind. While there are of course things that would not compared to a triple-A title, they are better than what I had originally planned for and have started to come into their own.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: Very exciting.
Yu Suzuki: The thing that has been harder than expected for me has been using the engine as is. Because as someone who used to write everything from code, I want to see and touch what’s inside, but can’t.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: I can imagine. Having previously created games starting by writing the programs, you would have some of that here to a degree. And along those lines, what do you feel has represented the most challenge, or rather turned out well in terms of development?
Yu Suzuki: Well, one thing I do feel better about lately is Shenhua. You could say she is my life’s work, and along with her expressions for one, I know I must forever keep on making improvements. It is a work without end. Both Ryo and Shenhua. I think we are now at the point with Shenhua’s model that I can say it finally is something I can approve of. Now it is a matter of getting the expressions and movements right.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: As fans already know, Shenmue hosts a wide variety of characters. How does character development look? Will there be even more characters to pack in?
Yu Suzuki: That’s right. In December—well it’s already December—so this month it looks like we’ll really be upping the count. It will go up to around 100 characters. The character design studio Lakshya Digital is working with us now, and we are seeing some really great models. I know these characters will make an impact and leave an impression.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: Can we expect characters wthat we won’t be able to unsee? (Laughs.)
Yu Suzuki: I can say that. (Laughs.) They’ll have some personality, shall we say. Look forward to them. They’re fun just to look at.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: Is there anything that you want to work on the most? Is there any challenge you want to take up?
Yu Suzuki: Well… I want to do something a little different with the battles. When it comes to fighting, there are things that I want to make my own, so I was thinking to do things a bit different from last time. We have been running some tests. It is not a game like Virtua Fighter that is about the timing. So, I hope… it will take the form of a puzzle game that anyone can play, with strong emphasis on choreography.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: Well! Is that to mean you don’t have to rely as much on play skill? Do you picture then fights blended into cutscenes to some degree?
Yu Suzuki: They may be influenced by whether you pick up some item, and so on. Incorporating more puzzle-type elements. That’s what I would like to do. And QTEs, along with other things.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: Can’t forget the QTEs.
Yu Suzuki: It would be nice to do a different kind of QTE.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: So much to look forward to. Can we expect to see these features added soon?
Yu Suzuki: Don’t expect them too soon. (Laughs.)
Hiroaki Takeuchi: So, we talked about the characters before. The different facets of character development are coming together, but what is the progress on the character voicing?
Yu Suzuki: Ryo had been decided early on, but we couldn’t find a Shenhua. That is until very recently. We had a lot of auditions.
(*Concerning the Japanese voice actors: The English voice actors for the main characters have almost all been cast. Remaining casting and recording will continue next year.)
Hiroaki Takeuchi: Congratulations.
Yu Suzuki: It was just two days ago.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: That certainly is news!
Yu Suzuki: Yes, it is. Most of the other parts have been cast, and the voice acting auditions are almost finished.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: I see. Will we at last get to recording in 2018.
Yu Suzuki: That’s right. We will get at it starting in 2018.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: I think it is time to wrap it up, but lastly, would you like to say something to all of your backers?
Yu Suzuki: 2018 has been the year we breathed life into the Shenmue characters. Daily life is vital to Shenmue, and is a major theme throughout. The most important part of Shenmue is how the characters go about their casual lives. This year we set ourselves up to accomplish that. I want to thank you all again for your continued support.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: Indeed! We will keep our hopes up for everything ahead.
Yu Suzuki: Yes, please.
Hiroaki Takeuchi: Alright, then. Thank you for speaking with me today.
Yu Suzuki: And thank you.

And here is a new FAQ posted on the collection’s official website:
Which version of Shenmue II did we port?
For technical reasons we started with the Xbox source code and data. This has the advantage of some additional features missing from the Dreamcast version:

  • Snapshots system
  • Filters
  • Texture mip-maps to improve anti-aliasing
As some community members will know, the Xbox does have some graphical differences to the DC version which will also be present in our version.
What features have we added?
As well as the herculean effort of porting the code to the new platforms, there is a huge number of things we have added:

  • Choice of Japanese or English speech in both games
  • Saves can be carried over from Shenmue into Shenmue II on all platforms
  • Saving anywhere in both games
  • HD resolution rendering
  • Updated UI
  • New post processing effects for both games
  • Full controller support and configurable mouse and keyboard for PC users
  • Full Achievement support for both games on all platforms
What does Modern control scheme mean?
Modern control scheme means we have enabled use of the analogue stick instead of the D-Pad for movement of Ryo, as well as adding full mouse and keyboard support for PC users.
Will the games run at 60Hz?
Throughout the engine, game code and scripts there are hard coded assumptions about a fixed 30Hz frame update rate, so the game needs to run at 30Hz.
Is the game 4:3 or widescreen?
Gameplay where the player can control the camera is 16:9.
Cutscenes are letterboxed in their original formats.
Can the emulated arcade games be played?
We are pleased to announce that all the arcade games in the original are fully playable in the new release!
Who do we have to thank for this incredible work?
The amazing team at d3t.

Toy Capsule Box Set now available for order.

The crowdfunding campaign for Shenmue III has reached $7 million with its Kickstarter and Slacker Backer campaigns combined, which has unlocked the “AI Battling” expansion to its battle system, developer Ys Net announced.
Here is an overview of the system, via Ys Net:
Battle System Expanded: AI Battling

This control system lets you automatically unleash the perfect technique in response to the opponent’s positioning and distance. R&D for this system is based on Yu Suzuki’s concept for players who are not used to fighting games or for those who want a full immersion battle experience. This battle system is highly compatible with, and will be an extension to the current battle system.
Additionally, Ys Net has announced that the “Toy Capsule Box Set” limited edition of the game is now available for order through Fangamer.
