Sega has released the second in its series of Shenmue I & II trailers exploring the basics of the Shenmue saga with Ryo Hazuki English voice actor Corey Marshall.

This time, it focuses on the characters, from Ryo to Lan Di and the many NPCs players encounter.

Here is an overview of the video, via Sega:

From Ryo himself to Lan Di, Corey introduces us to Shenmue’s key characters: the mysterious Shenhua appearing in Ryo’s dreams, Ren the Heavens gang leader, and many more friends, foes, and those whom Ryo would be wise to keep an eye on. Beyond the key characters that Ryo encounters, there are hundreds of NPCs awaiting you in the world of Shenmue: love interests, enemies, neighbors and merchants… and of course, a cat.
If you missed the first part, which focused on the story, watch it here.
Shenmue I & II is due out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on August 21.

Eurogamer: A look at Sega’s cancelled Shenmue remake

Published 22 hours ago. 61 comments.
Reportedly developed by the same team behind the remasters.

Sega was once working on a remake of Shenmue and possibly Shennmue II, according to a Eurogamer report.

The remake was allegedly in development for quite some time before being cancelled due to budget constraints and development delays.

Unlike the remastered version of Shenmue I & II released by Sega earlier this year, this version of Shenmue featured significant rendering improvements, proper shadow maps, higher resolution textures and foliage with higher complexity geometry, 3D objects for the previously flat textured roof tiles and fence post, ambient occlusion, upgraded NPCs, and more.

The video obtained by Eurogamer also includes footage of Shenmue II, suggesting that full remakes for both titles were in development. While the improvements for Shenmue II appear lesser in the video, it may be because it was in early development. Improvements include enhanced texture detail and the addition of shadow maps to the environment.

Here are some comparison images:

The remakes were reportedly developed by the same team that delivered the Shenmue I & II remasters.

Eurogamer contacted Sega for comment on the status of the remake, but has yet to receive a response. Whether it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen, but according to Eurogamer, “this video represents the tip of the iceberg and that a significant amount of more advanced work was completed.”

Shenmue III English voice recording report
Published 7 hours ago. 16 comments.
A look at the voice cast at work.
Ys Net has posted an official English voice recording report for Shenmue III, including a video of the voice cast in the recording booth in 2018.

Get the full report below.

■ English Voice Recording Report!

Hello Everyone,

The English voice recording is coming along so we want to report where we are at and get behind the scenes with the cast and crew.

If you have been following Corey Marshall on Twitter, you might have seen that English voice recording was also in session from last year. Shenmue III continues the tradition with a huge amount of voiced lines. We are about 70 to 80 percent done recording and we are happy to report we are right on track!

◆ Main Cast Introductions

Ryo Hazuki (voiced by Corey Marshall)

Shenmue-III_2019_01-30-19_001.jpg

Hey! It’s Corey Marshall! Without Corey, our English speaking Ryo just would not come to life. Corey was set to play Ryo when the project started back in 2015. It did take a quite a while to get into the studio and start recording the English voices, but Corey was full on ready to give a great performance, so expect the best!

Ling Shenhua (voiced by Brianna Knickerbocker)

Shenmue-III_2019_01-30-19_002.jpg

Playing our heroine in Shenmue III is Brianna Knickerbocker! Yu-san selected from a number of candidates through audio auditions only, and Brianna stunned with her great performance reel. Finally meeting at the studio, she stunned us again with her beauty. Brianna has acted in a dizzying array of games and animated features, so we will all be looking forward to her portrayal of Shenhua!

◆ Behind the Scenes at the Studio

Last year Yu Suzuki and sound director Takayuki Nakamura went to the studio in Los Angeles for the English voice recording jump off.

—Who’s this!? It’s Corey’s daughter, Katana, making her voice acting debut!

—Ready! Go?

—Yeah! The English voice crew brings it!

Shenmue-III_2019_01-30-19_008.jpg

Hope everyone enjoyed that! There was so much great back and forth on the Shenmue concept and technical aspects between Corey, Brianna, all the voice actors and the recording staff from Lionbridge Gaming in charge of the English voicing, making it a truly meaningful chapter in the journey!

Shenmue III Reboot Develop Blue 2019 panel summary, screenshots
Published 4 hours ago. 25 comments.
An hour-long beachside chat with Yu Suzuki.
Shenmue-3_04-12-19.jpg

Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki shared new information and screenshots of Shenmue IIIduring the “Beachside Chat with Yu Suzuki” panel at Reboot Develop Blue 2019 in Dubrovnik today.

Here is a summary of the panel, via @necrosofty:

  • Suzuki believes in the diversity of game puzzles and wants to present various ways to solve the problem.
  • Suzuki perceives reality as being something that gives you the feeling or idea of that place, rather than something real. It is the idea of “similarity” versus “reality.” He does not want to be the “simulation guy.”
  • For example, in one of the screenshots showcased, there are familiar Japanese food stalls in a Chinese setting and mountains from a totally different location. It is about creating the feeling of being in a location. He put more work into the faces and animations to give off a “feeling” rather than “reality.” The music, for example, was recorded with real Chinese instruments. And while the boat showcased in one of the screenshots is not something you would actually see in China, it still has the flavor of China.
  • Suzuki shifted the design of the game to meet his team’s strengths (such as his artist who enjoys making boats) as he realized the team needs to be engaged to make a good game.
  • Suzuki is trying to do things in Shenmue III that he could not do in its predecessors, such as pawning an item and gambling the money away. While those systems existed before, they were not connected.
  • The core fighting system is better integrated through a skill book which unlocks skills by collecting more items.
  • The game’s Baidu Village setting is one of two main areas. Baidu Village is a countryside area that features items and prize winning, as well as skills that can be purchased with money or exchanged.
  • Every game system is tied to the skill book.
  • Suzuki is working towards more complex accessibility modes for battle. Rather than difficulty dip switches like back in the day, they let you set the battle difficulty, ranging from easy to “better not play this mode.” The complexity of control increases with your chosen difficulty.
  • The dojo can be used to practice with a wooden man, spar, compete in matches, and increase your skills. Your can level up your dan in the dojo to clear matches that surface during the story.
  • There will be a movie that summarizes Shenmue I and II for newcomers, but Suzuki recommends playing them before playing Shenmue III.
  • Minigames include gatcha, crane games, a punching game, and an overall emphasis on physical or mechanical games. There will be electronic (video) games as well, and you can also win tickets that can be redeemed for prizes and more, which connect to the skill tree.
  • The forklift will return, but its use is still a secret. The forklift in this game will be slower than the original, but it is better integrateed into the game and is connected to critical path-related things.
  • The play style changed from Shenmue I to II, and has changed again with Shenmue III, but Suzuki thinks original fans will really like what the team at Ys Net has done.
Shenmue III is due out for PlayStation 4 and PC on August 27.
