I'm pretty amazed at how well those boots look.

Water actually preserves things really well. Humidity and dampness makes things decay more quickly, but being actually submerged in water can make make organic matter last for obscene amounts of time. Obviously things like animal remains (including people) will get eaten, but they won't rot much at all. They find stuff that fish won't eat but would normally rot away, like leather and wood, from centuries ago.
