That idea's logically sound, but it doesn't take fandom into account. People form emotional attachments to characters they like, and they want to read about them. If the writers/artists for those characters aren't doing something they like, they generally have no recourse but to either drop the comic, which they don't want to do, or read it and be unhappy for the time being, hoping that it'll get better. It's one of the things that sucks about being a fan of something.
