Should comics tone it down?

That idea's logically sound, but it doesn't take fandom into account. People form emotional attachments to characters they like, and they want to read about them. If the writers/artists for those characters aren't doing something they like, they generally have no recourse but to either drop the comic, which they don't want to do, or read it and be unhappy for the time being, hoping that it'll get better. It's one of the things that sucks about being a fan of something.

Agreed. And the big two milk this dilemma for all it is worth. Which one is more shameless and cynical about it is open to debate. Joe Q's made an EIC tenure out of taking his audience for granted (or for fools) and Dan DiDio has tried to beat him in that race to the bottom.

just an opinion, but if someone doesnt like the content in a comic "dont" pick it up, its as simple as that. An artist and writer have a vision, and if its what they want to be shown its what they want to be shown. If you dont like it find another company or an all ages comic simple as that. Ya know powerpuff girls.
This is a discussion about whether or not you as an individual believe comic should be more open-minded about how they portray crime and criminals. About whether or not you have a different vision of how things should be. Saying "this is how things are and thats it wah" is the Marvel method of dealing with things and apparantly the xisaacx method.
