Heres how to make Superman dark.

Superman is a dark character at first. Since Jor-El cant be used, heres what I was thinking. Superman believes he was sent to Earth, only to get powered by the Sun,so that he can conquer WarWorld. As Superman is told by his robot confidante, that was Jor-Els mission for him. So Earth doesn't really matter to him.
But as the movie progresses,Lex Luthor becomes his enemy and Superman helps clear Metropolis up. As the City becomes lighter,so does Superman, each character and Metropolis, helps him become Human. When WarWorld does arrive, instead of killing Mongul. Superman participates in the fights and wins. He refuses to kill Mongul. Suddenly his Robot confidante arrives and shows his dissapointment in Superman, claiming Humans have made him weak again.

Its then revealed that the Robot is in fact Brainiac. He tells Superman that he manipulated and erased his Humanity,in hopes of using Superman as a weapon in conquering planets for his Homeworld.Eventually Supes becomes the boyscout.

I like my Superman white.

We all remember what happend the last time he changed colors.

interesting thoughts. Though superman should be a light and happer character. Sure luthor, metropolis can be dark. And over the course of the film/film series metropolis becomes a becon of light/hope. So superman should be the light where as the city/villain threats are the dark aspects.

If they reboot, but still keep Routh, then I think he should be the lighter character, helping a dark Metropolis.

But if they had Sam Worthington for example,he should be dark, then eventually becomes lighter.

Routh, I believe deserves another chance. I was really moved by that scene in Returns, where he is watching TV and seeing all the terrible things in the World. I would like to see Routh deal with that sort of thing.

well with all the legal issues they are having and not able to get a direction they can decide on. Routh is probably way out of the picture then. If we are looking at 2014 the earliest for any new film that would be 8 yrs post SR and plently of time to start anew with superman.

No, he should by no means be dark. I think he should be more 3 dimensional in terms of having thoughts , fears , hopes and flaws like any one else but not a dark avenger. I agree that we need to get beyond the simple boy scout version but he's fundamentally about hope.

I think there are some really interesting ways you can show his struggle with his quest and his role in this world. In that sense you could show anxiety in his character but I wouldn't extent that to making him dark.

As far as his powers go I do think that a lesson the character could learn is that it takes more then his powers to make a difference and become a leader.

I think in terms of tone a reboot needs to take the source material seriously and respect it, as opposed to camping it up. I think Smallville in the first 3 seasons had the right tone.

Aww man. I keep hearing rumours that the World will end in 2012. We'll never see it now. LOL.

totally frodo, you want to honor and respect the source material for the character. Just look at the films on comic guys that have been more faithful/honnor the comics compared to ones that change things willy nelly. I agree superman/clark kent in film series needs to be more defined and i said before i rather take it clark kent is his real identity and superman is just what he can do. Trying to help the world and make it a better place. Though since superman has gone through so many many different takes in his long history. That is why i keep saying the best thing the next guys can do is look overall what traits were the best from each eras of the comics. Use those traits in a new combined form for superman. Then make an all original story with basis on certain top superman stories out there.

But IF he was a dark character?

Well. People have been telling me it would be good for a graphic novel,Ill send it off to DC. Ciao.

I think this should be said for the last time on SHH

If people mean dark as in TDK dark where your g/f is blown to pieces and a psychotic vigilante slams pencils in the heads of criminals then no

If however people dark as in taking a adult mature theme such as Superman dealing with moral issues such as a him leaving the earth and the earth having to suffer 9/11 type of disasters then yes . Or not being able to save everyone in time when a massive tragedy a la the tsunami takes places.
I'm not saying that it should be that specific but you get the basic idea.

Dark doesn't have to mean pushing the PG-13 rating in terms of gore , profanity and action scenes. Not every movie needs to have a happy go lucky take like spider-man running along the tunes of "raindrops keep falling on my head ". However a adult take wouldn't be bad either.

Not digging it.

I think his characterization was best on the animated series.

Not totally naive, but not an antihero.

He should never seem antihero.

No,....... a thousand times, no.

Also it's been mentioned here a couple of time to avoid the simple and naive farm boy also.

A foundation of his heritage is his physical perfection, health, and intellect. These things are innate to all Kryptonians. His ethical behaviour is indeed the result of his idyllic American small town upbringing, but his superior intellect would never allow him to be either simple minded or naive.

only things that should be dark is the villains, their threats to the city/world/to superman.

ya the villains should be dark and evil, instead of campy. Id still like to see superman get pissed off and go all red eyed on someone

also McTeigue basically confirmed hes had discussions with WB about Superman

The villain yes. Superman no.

Well depending on what is technically meant by the word 'dark'... No

Heck I personally thought the Superman in SR was too 'dark' (by my definition of the word anyway) with all the stalking & 'feel sorry for me I'm Superman' moments.
Heaven forbid if they actually tried to make the character 'dark' we'd probably have Superman who interogates people by throwing them accross America & catching them on the other side :down

I wouldnt mind it starting out out all bright and cheery like S:TM or spider-man, but it gets dark when an alien threat like Brainiac or Darkseid invades. Even then you could have Superman remain bright and hopeful.
He would be the one constant, the one bright hope in the Dark.
If not for Superman the earth would give up in the face of such a threat.
