Showtimes’ 'First Ladies' | Viola Davis, Michelle Pfeiffer, Gillian Anderson

OT Fagbenle Talks Playing Barack Obama, Working with Viola Davis & More / SiriusXM Video

During the interview the actor spoke to host Karen Hunter and co-hosts about turning down a previous opportunity to play an African-American icon, but taking on the role as Barack Obama in the Showtime series “The First Lady”, was because he felt he could relate to Obama’s character personally, and spoke about working with Viola Davis who plays Michelle Obama:

“I do think for me personally, Barack is someone who has an African father, who lived abroad in multiple countries as a youth, I feel that I genuinely come from as a person, someone who can really relate to that story.”

“I was doing Obama last week with queen V, queen Viola. Let me tell you something about Viola Davis.. she’s amazing. Oh my god. She’s playing Michelle Obama..I don’t really look like Barack, but the point is it’s about capturing the spirit. If you want to see Obama go on YouTube. I think our job as actors is to try and embody a spirit..Anyway, the point is about Viola. She’s so good, but also she’s political. We’d get into the chats, we get into philosophy, politics. She’s so well-read, she’s so knowledgeable. I just wanted to say, I love that woman and she’s everything.

‘The First Lady’: Ellen Burstyn, Eliza Scanlen, Cailee Spaeny To Recur – Deadline

Burstyn will play Sara Delano Roosevelt (SDR), President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s (Kiefer Sutherland) mother and Eleanor Roosevelt’s (Anderson) mother-in-law. Fiercely devoted to her only son, she commissioned a pair of houses as a wedding present for Franklin and his wife, on the strict condition that she could move in next to them. She had a complex and often domineering relationship with Eleanor, but the pair eventually grew close.

Scanlen will portray young Eleanor Roosevelt. The favorite niece of President Theodore Roosevelt, Eleanor lost both of her parents at a very young age. At 15, Eleanor was sent to Allenswood Academy, where she became an independent thinking, progressive and self-confident young woman. She married her fifth cousin Franklin in 1905.

Spaeny will play Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, the eldest child and only daughter of President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Eleanor Roosevelt. Anna was a writer, newspaper editor and special aide-de-camp to her father, acting as his assistant during World War II. Beloved by both parents, Anna also carried the burden of being the peacekeeper in her parents’ unconventional marriage.

Looks quite interesting. If there's a season 2, i'd love to see there be focus on some First Lady
s from the 19th century.

Well Pfeiffer is getting good notices as Betty Ford, but everything else seems to be getting a mixed or muted response.

Still looking forward to it.

Just added this to my DVR schedule. :D Looks great!
