Post-Mortem Interviews

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What came with the decision to kill off Wes?

PETE NOWALK: I have to take all the responsibility for it. It was a horrible decision to have to make, because everyone really loves their job here, and I love them all doing their job. When it comes down to why I made the decision is because he is the heart of the show, and really I wanted to do something that felt impactful, and it impacts every character. That’s why it killed me to make the decision, but also why I made it, is because it really spins out everyone, and I really wanted something to change the DNA of the show.

It wasn’t easy to make. I switched my mind a million times, and I really just didn’t make a decision, and I was like, “I’ll make it when I have to,” and “I’ll make it when I have to,” and then eventually it was episode 7, and I had to make a decision. It was the least fun aspect of this job that I’ve had so far. I’ve had to make hard decisions, but this one… we’re just a happy family really, and I love Wes. I love how Alfie portrays Wes. I’m really terrified actually what the show would look like without him, but I think Shonda [Rhimes] taught me something: It’s like, “Go toward the terror.” It was a hard decision, but it’s just going to be visceral for all the characters, and I think that’s what I was looking for.

The second half of the season will include flashbacks with Wes, correct?

Yes. So, we’re going to see Wes for sure, alive, in the rest of the season sporadically. Obviously the big mystery is who killed him? What happened to Wes? We will be flashing back to what happened to him as well as — I don’t want to give away anything, but we’re going to see him in flashbacks in a way that I hope feels very cathartic.

But moving forward, he likely would not be a series regular next season?

I haven’t decided. Betsy [Beers] is always like, “You don’t know in your show. It’s crazy with your timeline.” And that’s the truth. I don’t know. Who knows if we’ll have a next season? I don’t really even think about it beyond this season.

TVLINE | Presumably the second half of the season will delve into what happened in Annalise’s house — the explosion, the fire, Wes’ death, Laurel’s experience in the basement.

It’s a few hours of time, and we will be seeing those hours throughout the remaining episodes. In the first episode back, we’ll see what happened to Wes after he left the police station. We won’t get all the answers, but slowly, we’ll be pulling back the curtain. We’d been doing flash-forwards, and now we’ll be doing flashbacks. And by the end of the season, if not earlier, we’ll find out what actually happened to him and who killed him.

TVLINE | We know Annalise is in jail for murder and arson — and on the word of an informant. If Wes is dead — we thought he was talking to detectives in the same timeline, but now we know it was a few hours prior — does that mean someone else is the informant? Or were the detectives somehow thinking Wes was alive and about to turn on Annalise? I’m not sure I’ve got that entirely nailed down.

You are very savvy, mister! [Laughs] As you said, they said they had an anonymous source, but Wes never signed the agreement — so does that mean there’s someone else? That’s a big question in our first episode back, and we’ll get an answer to that that is really shocking.

When did you find out that you would be killed off?

Pete [Nowalk] told me around the seventh episode, so about a month and a half ago. I got a call from his assistant being like, “Hey can you come and talk to Pete?” And I was like, “This is it.” We were all in this state of uncertainty and nervous excitement. We were all anxious to find out. He told me and I went back and told everyone else — I told Pete that I’ve got to tell everyone else and he was like, “Of course you do.” We had time to let the shock set in.

I think most fans are guessing that Wes is the father to Laurel’s baby. What can you say about that?

I can say that it will become apparent in the first episode back. Beyond that, I wouldn’t want to ruin that for anyone. But his relationship with Laurel is very important — it’s developed over the course of the three seasons — she’s always been there for him when he had a problem and had to deal with it, she’s the one helping him through it and supporting it.

Kind of funny thinking about it now. [BLACKOUT][BLACKOUT]Who killed Sam? Wes, Who shot Annalise? Wes. Who's under the sheet? Wes.[/BLACKOUT][/BLACKOUT]

Besides Mahoney's son, I think it could also be whoever Mahoney was on the phone with the night he got shot.

I really don't care enough for the character but I was shocked that he was killed. I always assumed he was the safest. Now I'm kinda sad we'll never see the [blackout]incestiuous sexual chemistry[/blackout] between him and Annalise again. Unless... there's [blackout]ghost sex[/blackout]! :funny:

Connor killed Wes since he already blamed Wes for all of their problems

Show is crazy. I have a theory but need to watch older episodes to see.

Connor is really, really annoying now. Also, I'm starting to feel like [blackout]Laurel[/blackout] (accidentally perhaps) killed Wes. Like Asher saying that pointing the blame on someone else is a sign of guilt is a clue although he was referring to Connor in that moment. IDK?

I can't see that happening. For one, she had been out getting drunk and only showed up at Annalise's house about five seconds before KABOOM, but also I feel like everything we've seen with her since it happened has been too powerful to not have been genuine. Same with Annalise.

I'm betting on [blackout]Bonnie[/blackout]. They've given us flashbacks to fill in where other key characters were/how they interacted with him before the fire, but all we've seen of her is the call she got from Frank that Wes knew Rebecca was dead, and that's something they haven't followed up on at all. I think [blackout]him deducing that it was Bonnie, confronting her and being killed for it[/blackout] would provide a certain level of closure there. Connor feels like an obvious mislead, being shown in flashback with two episodes to go, and the Mahoneys would be a boring solution. [blackout]Bonnie[/blackout] would be huge.

Finale night. In an interview with Jack Falahee, when asked the cast's reaction to the killer reveal, he said the audience would be just as shocked as the cast was. So, with that in mind, if it's not [blackout]Bonnie[/blackout], then my wild guess would be that [blackout]they snuck Marcia Gay Harden in and had Hannah (remember, Annalise called her when she was drunk, just before the fire) do the deed[/blackout].

OR... maybe [blackout]Michaela[/blackout]. I don't know if maybe she would've had the opportunity to slip away from her mom on the night it all went down.

Sure, but not really.

I hope Frank's ready to choke some more motherf***ers, because when Annalise learns the truth, she's dispatching him to take out [blackout]Laurel[/blackout]'s whole family.

Amen to that.

Poor Wes. From conception to death he had the worst luck

Yeah that was not a good finale. I don't know why they couldn't pull it off. Like season 1's finale was disappointing. With season 2, I was just over it and glad they were done with the siblings. And for season three's finale, Wes' killer is underwhelming and I was confused by a lot of things.

I think what makes the finales mediocre are the killer reveals. We were expecting it to be someone we were attached to [blackout]or someone we at least knew,[/blackout] but then they do stuff like this and make it someone completely left field and you're like "....really?" instead of "I KNEW IT!"

While I am a bit underwhelmed by the reveal I did like the finale. And the real killer kind of opens the doors to some new storylines.

This show has killer mid season finales but weak season finales

I just don't get it

Call me crazy but I actually liked the reveal

You can't have this show always have any of the main cast be the killers all the time otherwise it would get predictable. So to bring in somebody we never expected to be the one to kill Wes was pretty much a breathe of fresh air IMO. Now in next Season we could see exactly why Laurel's Father wanted Wes dead

I've liked every mid season and season finale since the first season so I'm crazy too.

My thoughts exactly! Mid season finale of S1 and 3 remain to be some of the show's best episodes. The finales, not really.

bad place yeah! Smits is great.

Except in the f***ing Star Wars prequels. But that wasn't his fault.
