Sicario

Sicario Featurette - Alejandro (2015) - Benicio Del Toro

This movie, man. It's like feeling you're about to have a heart attack for 2 hours. Saw it in the city last night and it kicked my ass.

Blunt is unsurprisingly great. Probably her best performance I've seen yet. Brolin is perfect for his role, but Del Toro quietly steals the whole thing. He's just fascinating to watch, can't take your eyes off him. Those three all get great stuff to work with, and the rest of the acting is top notch. Jeffrey Donovan and Jon Bernthal are great in small roles.

It looks fantastic, it's Deakins, we all know that by now. Gorgeous, brutal, intense camerawork. The sound is masterful, the score is haunting, the craft on display here is absolutely incredible.

My one qualm with the movie is
what they end up doing with Blunt's character and her overall trajectory, but it kind of works for what the film's going for, oh and the very last second of the movie is bizarrely abrupt and kind of clunky. That's a nitpick though, obviously.
(No specifics but just in case anyone doesn't want to read it)

Denis cranks up the tension and scale of Prisoners to 11 with this without losing any character, emotion, or drama, so if you liked that then Sicario is a knockout. I felt like I had to dunk my head in a bucket of ice water when it ended. Definitely one of the best of the year so far for me. Denis does it again.

Don't have time to go full on with this film but checked it out this morning. Easy 4.5/5, 3rd favourite film of the year so far. Excellent stuff and masterful work from all involved.

How is the political stuff? The script I read long ago doesn't really blame one country over the other.

Can't wait for this. Love the cast and the atmosphere just feels so eerie and unsettling, like in The Bridge.

Emily Blunt is so beautiful. My goodness.

It's really good, man but if you've not seen Polytechnique you really should. It's his best movie to date. Sicario might even top that.
Poly is rarely brought up anytime Villeneuve's other movies (Incendies, Prisoners) are praised/suggested in a discussion so I'm glad it's being mentioned.

Oh man. I can't wait to see this. It's showing at the Landmark near my house. My wife is gonna love this. They have that couch seating too and you can put your feet up on the coffee table.....just like at home. :woot:

$#!T. It's not in the couch theater. Maybe I should start a petition......

I remember when I went to see Gravity. When I walked out of the movie, I was just drained. I looked at my watch and thought "Holy.....That movie was just an hour and a half?" It felt like I'd been run through the wringer for a minimum of 2 hours.

Denis had a Reddit AMA to day about the movie but 95% of the people were interested in only Blade Runner 2. Felt sorry for the guy. Trying to promote one movie but people asking him about the movie he's a while away from talknig about. Heck it's not even his next movie as well.

This movie looks really entertaining!
But...with a kid I am seeing less and less movies in the theater. I wish I could rent it right now :(

"Sicario" sequel in the works (EXCLUSIVE) http://bit.ly/1itFgxS

Lionsgate is developing a sequel to “Sicario” that will center on Benicio Del Toro’s mysterious hitman.

The project is being overseen by Taylor Sheridan, the writer of the acclaimed thriller.

Director Denis Villeneuve is also involved, although it’s early in the process and it’s not clear if he would come on board to direct.

“Before the release of this movie, I was talking to Denis and I said what happened to this character?” said Patrick Wachsberger, co-chair of the studio’s motion picture group. “Where is Benicio going?”

Seeing this Friday. :) Will be my first DV movie, and I'm super excited about it.

Why is Hollywood hellbent on robbing mysterious characters of their allure?

It's pretty much along those lines. It makes a good case of the short comings of the countries involved while showing the necessity of some involved and strikes a middle ground between the issues involved, not just black and white; very clear shades of grey.

Ah the atmosphere in this movie was just so wunderbar. <3 Another bleak movie along the lines of Enemy and Prisoners. Del Toro and Josh Brolin steal the show easily, while Emily Blunt's character is there to be the viewer, the rookie who gets to see just how dark the cartel business gets down to.

Saw it today and it was indeed pretty intense... After that first scene, I was quietly wondering if I could handle another two hours of that. Thankfully, it never reaches THAT level again, at least not for me. But man. You just feel totally uneasy all the way until the end. Really atmospheric and tightly put together.

I hate to get political, but what happens in the movie isn't even half of the real stuff that goes down in mexico. Our relationship with Mexico should be a lot better. Hell, our history with them is written in blood and far more crucial than the one we have with Canada imo. A couple months ago, 40 something college students were picked up by police officials and were killed and their bodies rumored to be burned in a dump area. And this was all done by their local governor. Crazy ****, man.

The biggest drug lord in the world escapes federal prison twice. He was only one week away from being brought over here. Lawd.
