Sicario

Just saw it, and I loved this movie. Best movie of the year so far, or at least it's Sicario or Ex Machina.

There was one scene towards the end with Benicio Del Toro, which was one of the most intense scenes I've seen in a long time. I was at the edge of my seat and you could just feel the tension in the air. Those who have seen the movie probably know which scene I'm talking about.

Oh yeah... the
family dinner
right?

Yes!

I was sitting at the edge of my seat thinking "They won't do it right?" but they did it. It gave me a similar feeling to the twist in Se7en, where you feel like your innocence has been taken from you and you have witnessed some of the darkest things ever.

Definitely one of the best scenes in the movie though, and the one I will remember the clearest.

Thoughts: Really liked this movie. Great cinematography, great performances and the score was amazing. The thing that kept my "like" from turning into love was a lack of focus. Was the focus the story of Blunt, Del Toro, or stopping the cartel? Seemed like it was all three, but I didn't feel satisfied by any of them save for Del Toro's, which by the time they started fleshing it out I felt like they should have began working that way just a bit earlier. Still, it was a very enjoyable film.

Yeah this film is right up there with Ex Machina for my favorite of the year. After this and Inherent Vice, I just wanna see Josh Brolin in more comedic roles. "What's the password?"

LOL, guess I'll be weezerspider's echo today, as this is indeed tied with Ex Machina as my favorite of the year, too. Really excellent. Can't wait to watch it again. That last shot of Blunt's character, [blackout]hunched over the balcony, completely broken[/blackout], was perfect. And that haunting score won't get out of my head.

Yeah this was excellent. I didn't love this as much as Prisoners but the same amount of skill and eye of directing that I love in Villeneunve is present here. The man just knows how to pull you in with an opening shot. I got chills. That score. Johansson doesn't disappoint once again.

Del Toro's performance is so understated and he never raised his voice which I admire a lot. But he was intense nonetheless. That scene with the water cooler. I just wanna know what he did with it.

Blunt was solid too. God, she should have been Wonder Woman. Or even Black Widow.

I felt like it was both Blunt's and Del Toro's film. Both opposing sides. I think maybe at one point Del Toro was like Blunt but then what happened changed him and he crossed to the other side and became a wolf long before this movie happened.

Not entirely sure how I feel about the ending but man once it got to [BLACKOUT]retrieving Guillermo[BLACKOUT], you can count on one hand how many scenes didn't feel tense. Acting was great from all the leads, especially Blunt and Del Toro. And the cinematography was a delight as expected. Just breathtaking.

I preferred The Martian, but that shouldn't take anything away from this movie. I saw both movies yesterday and didn't go wrong.

Yeah I wouldn't mind seeing both but don't have the time or money. Both sound good in their own ways.

‘Sicario’ Sequel in the Works at Lionsgate (EXCLUSIVE)
“This is a movie that needs word of mouth,” said Wachsberger. “It’s not an easy title. ‘Sicario’? You have to Google that. You’re not going to wear a t-shirt of that.”
Brent Lang said:
Lionsgate is developing a sequel to “Sicario” that will center on Benicio Del Toro’s mysterious hitman.[

He added that he hoped that “Sicario” with its eerie shots of nighttime raids and violent border cronfrontations might finally score an Oscar for Roger Deakins, who is zero for twelve despite nominations for the likes of “Unbroken,” “Fargo,” and “Skyfall,” calling the award, “past due.”

Wachsberger also agreed with critics who have been predicting Oscar love for Blunt and calling her performance as tough agent forced to question her beliefs one of the finest of her career.

So this or the Martian?

Depends on what you prefer. Personally I liked Sicario just slightly more, but both are in my top3 movies of 2015 so far.

Sicario - Bleak thriller where a lot of bad stuff happens, and at the end of it nobody is really gonna come out with a smile on their face. Similar tone to Prisoners, but taken even further, much thanks to the violence involved and the action has a "real" feeling to it. Three of the best acting performances of the year from Blunt/Del Toro/Brolin.

The Martian - Funny, entertaining and more of an adventure movie. Cast Away in space with more comedy to it. You get both the survival and the rescue aspect, so unlike Cast Away it's not just focused on the survival part. Some great performances and we see Matt Damon and Ridley Scott return to form. A more casual & enjoyable "blockbuster", and I don't mean anything negative with that.

The Martian might be the safer bet (I think it will appeal to more people), but if you really liked Prisoners and Enemy, Sicario is easily on par with them, maybe even my favorite out of the three.

At this point I wonder if Denis is even capable of making a film that isn't really bleak and depressing. Not that they aren't great mind you (they are). But jeez does the dude seem really cynical about, well everything.

Well his next two movies are sci fi and he said they won't be as dark as Incedies/Prsioners/Enemy/Sicario. He did those pretty much back to back.

His next movie.

“Story Of Your Life” is a sci-fi film about communication, right? That seems like an interesting way to approach sci-fi more cerebrally.

It's how language influences your perception of reality. It's a very beautiful and powerful story. It was important for me to do this because after “Polytechnique”and “Incendies,” “Prisoners,” and “Sicario,” I found that I need to take a break out of darkness. "Story of Your Life" is very emotional and more light, and I just needed to go there for a while.

But what’s it about exactly?

The movie starts with the landing of alien spaceships everywhere in the world, in random places. Places that have no meaning and there is nothing happening. It's like a real positive invasion movie. The spaceships are landing, and nothing is happening. It's the story of a linguist, played by Amy Adams, that is hired by the U.S. government, to go ahead and get in contact with those aliens inside and to try to understand why they are on Earth. Is a very poignant story.

That's sounds like it could be interesting. Of course he's also doing the Blade Runner sequel, and that film was also pretty bleak (even the proper ending is ambiguous).

Then it turns out the aliens are only using those places to set up base camps to vaporize us. :o

Blade Runner is dark but it won't get to Incendies or Sicario levels of Darkness.

So I saw it. It was very well acted but it had a "been there done that" feeling to me, especially since I am also watching Narcos on Netflix. In fact, it felt like it could have been a 10 episode series on HBO or Netflix.

I hated, hated Emily Blunt's character. It was just a bad sexist stereotype. Yes she carried a gun, but she was basically the uptight female who kept the alpha male heroes from doing their job. She even had to be saved from the corrupt cop (Jon Bernthal was basically playing Shane from Walking Dead). She really added nothing to the story besides being the audience entry point.

And the other cop's story was also basically unnecessary. It was there just so they could tie in the ending on the soccer field. But from the minute he showed up, you know he would be killed.

Del Toro was great. Not sure if I would watch a spinoff with just him though.

I can see that spinoff movie they're talking about with Del Toro be a HBO miniseries instead.

I feel like Silvio's "pointlessness" and Blunt's "doesn't know anything" WAS the point. The Drug War is murky, complicated, and a battle between "kings." Those two, they're pawns and in the end, their fates DON'T really matter in the grand scheme of things. They're just another statistic, and nothing really changes.

Gonna agree with everyone else, this is easily one of my favorite films of the year. So far I've enjoyed Black Mass, Ex Machina, and this the most out of everything else in 2015.

I agree and I thought that that was rather obvious. The last scene drives it's point well very poetically. The fact that some people seem to miss this is kind of disheartening in regards to the state of cinema-goers.
