Anyway, this looks intense but it also reminds me of 75% of the other action movies I've seen in the past 20 years: the hero goes into a dangerous environment, kills a bunch of bad guys, rescues someone (usually a woman or a child) and then finds himself protecting her from threats from all sides. Maybe there's more to it, but right now, the plot feels very generic.

I also worry that a film coming out like this right now will just end up being fuel for the "Let's execute all the drug dealers!" crowd.

I completely agree with you.
 
Some of the lighting looks to be emulating Deakins. Which isn't bad. Emulator Deakins is better than no Deakins.
 
It just looks awful compared to the first. I am specifically talking look here. Though the direction and characters also seem off.

One thing I really like about the first one is how deliberate everyone is. There is a controlled rage. One shot, one kill. Think the dinner scene. And even then an expression of over the top rage is two shots. This one seems a bit more over the top in that regard. A lot of overkill.
 
I feel with each trailer like they are getting further and further away about what I liked about the first, too much reliance on going bigger and badder with the action when the first was about the tense nature of the action, like the border scene was more about the threat of what was about to happen rather than mass explosions that made it edge of your seat stuff. This looks far more in your face and generic. Still interested to see because of how much I love the first and Del Toro/Brolin but Im setting my expectations low sadly when I want to be buzzing for it.
 
Also, part of what made the first one work so well was how morally ambiguous Del Toro’s character was. Yes, he suffered a tragedy but what he does at the end arguably makes him a monster. And then you have him threatening Blunt’s character. He wasn’t a hero. Yet this movie looks like it turns him into your generic “...and ONE MAN is the only one who can save her!” hero character.

Yeah I dont remember thinking while watching the first "If only this had more children in it i need of rescue it would make it better". Granted it depends on how its handled and I get the angle with Del Toros family history but its one of the things that worries me about the new trailer.

I like that the tone seems much different than the first film. Better to go a somewhat different direction with it than what the first Sicario did.
 
Sheridan hasn't let me down yet. If it weren't for the same writer being attached I likely wouldn't be interested at all but I retain some hope for this one.
 
That's a real shift in tone. It's like going from "True Detective" to "Lethal Weapon"

The 2015 trailer was very suspenseful and more subdued compared to the new trailer with a pop song inserted
 
Yeah this seems to be going for full action this time out rather than thriller, very different from the first in tone. Still a bit unsure what to expect from this but hopefully its still something to enjoy.

As for Alejandro's seeming sudden development of a conscience... maybe he is trying to redeem himself after he got his revenge. Him becoming merciful and altruistic obviously brings him to loggerheads with Graver.

I think whilst it is a bit cliche, it could be interesting to see play out. We're talking about elite actors here and a top, top writer.

Very true, I remember when the trailers for Bladerunner 2049 dropped and a few said it looked more like an action film as that is what was presented front and center in the trailers, trailers can be very misleading.

Yeah if this didnt have Brolin/Del Toro I would have written it off long ago personally and the writer is obviously got a good track record, the director I know little about so cant say much on that but losing Deakins/Villeneuve is big shoes to fill.
 
Does Brolin even sleep? He averages 3 movies a year.
