Oct. 31, 2008: Officers from the Sumter Police Department converge on the scene of a shooting off of Wise Drive in Sumter, S.C.

SUMTER, S.C. — The parents of a 12-year-old shot to death while trick-or-treating said Monday they hope the man accused of killing him is haunted for the rest of his life.
T.J. Darrisaw died Halloween night after police say a convicted felon unleashed a barrage of bullets from inside a home, pumping at least 29 shots through the closed door and front of the house. The boy's father and brother also were wounded.
"The injury to my arm is not as bad as the injury to my heart. I've lost a piece of my heart forever," father Freddie Grinnell Jr. said as he sat in his living room Monday.
Police said the suspect, Quentin Patrick, 22, opened fire with an AK-47 because he thought he was being robbed. The family went to the home because the porch light was on, usually a signal that trick-or-treaters are welcome.
Two of three siblings who went to the door with their father were wearing ghoulish masks. Their parents said the slain boy was determined to get candy first, so he was in front when the shots were fired.
"T.J. saved us that night," Grinnell said. "He took most of the shots."

When the shooting stopped, Grinnell said, the door swung open. Patrick stood there, gun in hand, and said, "Oh, no."
"I was holding my son while he was bleeding, and he was backing out of the yard," Grinnell recalled.
Grinnell and another son who was shot were treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital.
T.J.'s mother, Daphne Grinnell, said T.J. liked to bake cakes, in part because he relished licking the batter, and constantly asked what he could do to help out around the home. The seventh-grader was on his middle school drill team and loved math and board games.
"He was always up for a challenge," his father said, recounting how his son got up early for math tutoring. "I was looking forward to his graduation, to high school, to college. I was looking forward to all of it because I know he would make it."
A bond hearing was scheduled Monday afternoon for Patrick, who is charged with murder and three counts of assault and battery with intent to kill. The public defender's office had not assigned him an attorney Monday morning.
State records show Patrick has been charged with evading police and a string of drug crimes since he turned 18 in 2004. He was sentenced to three years in prison but released in January 2007 under a program for first-time offenders after serving just five months.
T.J.'s parents said they want Patrick to suffer for a lifetime behind bars.
"He should have to live every day in jail and see it and feel it every day for the rest of his life," Daphne Grinnell said.
Freddie Grinnell Jr. said he doesn't want an apology.
"'I'm sorry' does not bring my child back," he said. "I want justice."
Meanwhile, he continues to relive the nightmare of the shooting.
"I see the same thing," Grinnell said. "We were just standing on the front porch for a second, and all hell broke loose. It happened so quickly."

This is truly the saddest thing I've read in a very, very long time.

:(

What is the human race coming to?

:( My condolences to the family.

I agree. It is heartbreaking. Why didn't he think about that being Halloween night? That is awful.

The "excuse" sounds horribly lame, someone knocks on your door on Halloween and you think it's a robber. Plus you fire an AK-47?!?!?! Person deserves to rot in jail long enough for a trial then executed.

There is no excuse for what that guy did in killing that 12-year-old boy. He said he thought they were robbers, but would robbers ring your doorbell, on Halloween night? I hope he will stay in prison for the rest of his life.

This whole thing makes me ill. I read in another story where this guy's girlfriend got caught trying to flee out of the back of the house with $7500 in cash. They both have multiple drug convictions. I think he owed some drug dealers money and was paranoid out of his skull over it, which lead to his inappropriate use of the gun.

You should get some rest from your illness... what with the double vision and all.

I live in Sumter, South Carolina and I was shocked when I heard about this story. Now I'm sure people will be paranoid when Halloween comes because they don't know if said person has a gun with them or not.

With that said the person should suffer in jail forever and never see the light of day.

Who the **** is freaked out on Halloween? You already know what the deal is.

Holy ****, that's horrific. I can just imagine the moment where the little kid is pushing ahead to be at the front of the door, than excitingly ringing the door bell and the next moment being ripped to shreds. That's ****ing terrible and insane, almost like a plot to a horror movie. The next Halloween the father is going to take revenge or something. Ugh, the whole thing just makes me sick.

Is it just me or is the dad making fun of his son for being overweight?

I think we need to give this man a call.

I think that man should stay dead and buried along with his movie series. :)

Well, I agree to an extent. I'm hoping the sixth film is the last one. But with that said I'm stating that a Jigsaw trap would be ideal for the man who shot and killed an innocent child.

:csad: This is heartbreaking. What was the guy's excuse? He though they were robbers? So robbers ring your doorbell? Idiot, he deserves to rot in prison.

Yeah... Hurray for gun control.:whatever:

Seriously why in the hell do we the people need to have automatic weapons?

That is very very sad. That family is going to be miserable for a long time.

I just want to make a mention that it's obvious to me that age doesn't discriminate when it comes to stupidity and general evil character of nature.

That's horrible.

this is sad, and not to downplay the tragedy, but it seems to me that the kid didn't SAVE anyone. He didn't leap in front of his parents to deflect the bullets. He didn't push anyone out of the way. He shoved his way in front to get all the candy, and instead took the most of the bullets. And, why do both of his parents talk about how much he liked candy and cake batter? Was he a fat kid?

"T.J. saved us that night," Grinnell said. "He took most of the shots."

Am I just reading this wrong, or is that a horrible thing to say? :csad:

Oh, Dew....as usual, your heartless demeanor turns into a philosophical debate for all of us. :o
