Now…I think everyone here (I hope) will agree that the Super Mario Bros movie SUCKED on many, many levels. But I am convinced that the game could infact be done in movie form AND be enjoyable if we stayed closer to the roots of the game.
Now, reading that you might think I’ve been taking a little too much of the “magic mushroom” myself…but I see it more as a challenge…to take a shallow platformer and turn it into an enjoyable movie.

That’s what this thread is all about….let’s say you were given the job of creating the story for a Super Mario Bros movie (a restart for the series of films that never happened beyond the first film) What would you do? What would the story be like? Think of this as a CHALLENGE.  (sorry for grammer, I’m typing this fast enough to break the sound barrier)

I’ll start. It’s just a brief description, no details. (I’m about to leave work here)

It would consist of two plumbers that find a large pipe in the sewers. They get sucked in by some unknown means and end up in the Mushroom Kingdom where they encounter a host of characters, they are given food to eat as guests in the kingdom and discover one of the foods being a mushroom.

One that doesn’t effect the people of that world, but when the plumbers eat it are given super strength and the ability to jump much higher than the normal human. Bowser, king of the Koopa would then attack a little while later and kidnap the Princess in hopes of finding the fabled Lost Pipe. A pipe that leads to other worlds. There would be plenty of stomping battles and even a few scenes of platforming that would consist of our heroes using their new abilities to jump from crumbling platform to the next in a cavern deep underground, among other places.

This would be a dark/comedy/action film. On the outside it would have some kiddy elements, but would have more than enough humor for adults. (think Shrek only with much more “intense” scenes of violence) It wouldn’t be watered down and would have plenty of witty dialogue and character interactions. And of course lots of superhuman like action. Possibly even a couple spoofs of other movies and a “wink, wink, nudge, nudge” scene related to the game.

Think Shrek meets Kung Fu Hustle

"think Shrek only with much more “intense” scenes of violence"

lol Think bad movie.

Mario Mario (Steven Seagal) is a brutal assassin for the Mushroom family, who sells his soul to the devil (Bowser, played by Ron Perlman) to save his dying brother Luigi (Vin Diesel). The devil burns a mark in his forehead; "M", and gives him the ability to throw fireballs and jump really high.

But Luigi dies anyway... Mario teams up with Donkey Kong (Michael Clarke Duncan), Diddy Kong (Jackie Chan), and "Peach" - a sexy stripper (Scarlett Johansson) to kick Bowser's ass.

Yeah... And Yoshi's a motorcycle.

HAHAHAHA!!!
no...

I think the best way to go here would be to follow in the footsteps of past greats and play out the cute-campy-sillyness for what it is instead of trying to make it look "grown up". Just look at movies like Labyrinth for example. some of the characters look incredibly silly, and yet in the contex of the story, it works.

Have two plumbers get sucked into the mushroom kingdom, a place where little mushroom people live and are ruled by a fair princess that's been kidnapped by the evil king koopa. play out the game's characteristics in a cool visual way while stressing how magical everything feels for the two heroes and you're set!

Why not?:( Think Ghost Rider meets Kill Bill.

And Uwe Boll should direct it.
I thought you were joking at first, and now I can tell you are.

exactly how it should be, and how it should have been.

I always thought a CGI cartoon of Mario would be the best way to go.

And for god's sake, if someone ever decides to do a decent adaptation, don't make Luigi into an annoying little hyperactive brat again...please!

Speaking of Luigi, Luigi's Mansion would make a pretty cool film.

HAHAHA...I love it. :)

I notice you said you wanted a "dark" Mario movie, but why? Mario games are very tounge-in-cheek and not meant to be dark. A Mario movie could be made, but it couldn't take itself too seriously, should be incredibly light hearted and would probably work best in CGI form.

Could be cool if done right, something GrimGoblin said.. but I'd rather see a CGI Lylat Wars movie..

And no more of Luigi's "good feelings" that usually almost get him and Mario in trouble.
