I've seen this done for a couple other shows, so I thought it would be a good idea for Smallville. It's a bit hard to explain (but easy to understand). Basically, you try to compile the "ultimate season" by choosing the best episode out of the others of the same position in each season. For example, the first episode of the "Ultimate Season" choices are:

Pilot
Vortex
Exile
Crusade
Arrival

You vote for one of those, and the one with the most votes at the end of a period of time becomes the first episode of the "Uutimate season". You do this until you reach the season finale, and then you have the ultimate season of Smallville! Easy enough, isn't it?

I figure it's best to do it in groups of four, since that will expedite the process much more. You can notify your choices by bolding, underlining, deleting the other choices, whatever - just something that shows which episode you like the most. Feel free to explain why you chose what you did as well. I'll be leaving out Season Six since it has not completed yet.

The Ultimate Season So Far:
1.) Pilot
2.) Heat
3.) Hidden
4.) Red
5.) Run
6.) Transference
7.) Splinter
8.) Ryan
9.) Lexmas
10.) Whisper
11.) Unsafe
12.) Reckoning
13.) Vengeance
14.) Obsession // Krypto (*tied*)
15.) Cyborg
16.) Crisis

Seventeenth Episode
Reaper
Rosetta
Legacy
Onyx
Void

Eighteenth Episode

Ninteenth Episode

EXODUS wins by default as Season Two is the only one to have twenty-three episodes.

This round will go until 1/7 or shortly around there.

Wow! This is gonna be difficult since some eps are continuations of the prior ep, but I'll take a stab at it...

First Episode
Pilot
Vortex
Exile <- Yeah, this wins out over Pilot. It was just THAT good. :O
Crusade
Arrival

Second Episode
Metamorphosis
Heat
Phoenix
Gone
Mortal <- Curses on you for making me have to choose between Heat and Phoenix. :p

Third Episode
Hothead
Duplicity
Extinction
Facade
Hidden <- Geeze! If they were all THIS easy.

Fourth Episode
X-Ray
Red <- Gah! Yet again, this was a very tight race with X-Ray, but Red Clark will WIN any of MY best-of lists. :D

This sounds fun! They do something similar at a Pearl Jam MB picking the best song from each album based on track placement.

Anyway, my picks:

First Episode
Pilot
Vortex
Exile
Crusade <-- 'My name is Kal-El. It is time to fufill my destiny."
Arrival

Second Episode
Metamorphosis
Heat <-- This episode's great simply for the scene where Jonathan shows clark how to use his heat vision. Classic!
Phoenix
Gone
Mortal

Third Episode
Hothead
Duplicity
Extinction
Facade
Hidden <-- Pat's right. The first four seasons all aired clunkers in the third episode.

Fourth Episode
X-Ray
Red <-- Another easy one.

i had to go bust out all my vd box sets to do this but hee are my choices:

crusade (these are tough because the premieres and finales are the best)
heat (new power, smokin "Hot" guest star)
hidden (easiet of the bunch)
Aqua (there i said it bro!-but lois in a bathing suit )

What about S5? I think you should include that.
Fun idea, btw.

First Episode
Pilot <-this was the toughest choice. Pilot only gets the edge on Exile because of how successful it was as a pilot.. and the nostalgia points.
Vortex
Exile
Crusade
Arrival

Second Episode
Metamorphosis
Heat
Phoenix
Gone
Mortal <--for me, that's a big d'uh. ;)

Third Episode
Hothead
Duplicity
Extinction
Facade
Hidden <-- Phenomenal episode on every level.

Fourth Episode
X-Ray
Red <--another easy call.

Pilot
Vortex
Exile <--Easy. One of the best episodes. Ever.
Crusade
Arrival

Second Episode
Metamorphosis
Heat<--Tough choice, but I just love this episode. :D
Phoenix
Gone
Mortal

Third Episode
Hothead
Duplicity
Extinction
Facade
Hidden <-- I gotta agree with everyone else on this one. No contest.

Fourth Episode
X-Ray
Red <--Yet again, none of the other eps could compete with this.

how about the next four because i pretty much agree with kaboom

The Pilot is still the best opener IMO. I sat up for about 7 hours after it aired looking through my Superman comics I hadnt looked out in about 7 years.

then it's

Heat
Hidden
Red

New set of four up! I predict most of them will be easy choices . . .

Fifth Episode
Cool
Nocturne
Perry
Run<----Best superhero ep. ever IMO
Thirst

Sixth Episode
Hourglass
Redux
Relic
Transference<-------There's no way to hate on this episode. It was awesome. Loved the prison fight especially awesome.
Exposed

Seventh Episode
Craving
Lineage
Magnetic
Jinx
Splinter<---------What can I say? Paranoid Clark rocks. It doesn't hurt that Braniac's in this episode either. :D

Eighth Episode
Jitters
Ryan
Shattered<---------As much as I love 'Solitude' (and I really do), this episode has got it all: Morgan Edge, Lex going crazy, the start of the Julian story (which I loved especially in Memoria). Awesome episode.
Spell
Solitude

5) Run

6) Relic

7) Splinter

8) Solitude

Fifth Episode
Cool
Nocturne
Perry <---------- Wow, this was tougher than I thought. As much as I love "Run" (it was the template for how to do superhero guest spots), it's McKean's performance as Perry that was the deciding factor. I want him back on the show! Also loved the way the show deals with Clark's powers being affected by the sun.
Run
Thirst

Sixth Episode
Hourglass
Redux
Relic
Transference <----- Easily one of the best eps of Smallville ever. Great job by Tom and Glover.
Exposed

Seventh Episode
Craving
Lineage
Magnetic
Jinx
Splinter <------- If anyone ever gives Welling crap for his acting ability, they need to be pointed to this (as well as Transference.) Top notch!

Eigth Episode
Jitters
Ryan <----------- As great as Shattered and Solitude are, I got to go w/ Ryan just because it was such an emotional episode. The scene in the balloon stil brings a tear. :(
Shattered
Spell
Solitude

Fifth Episode
Cool
Nocturne
Perry
Run - Torn b/w 'Perry' and this, but 'Run' wins out.
Thirst

Sixth Episode
Hourglass - So, so tough, because I love 'Transference', it's one of my favourite eps of all time. But so is this. Overall, this stays with me though, so I have to go with it. *feels bad for Transference*
Redux
Relic
Transference
Exposed

Seventh Episode
Craving
Lineage
Magnetic
Jinx
Splinter - Oddly enough, I dont like this ep all that much, but it's a tour de force for Tom Welling, and I love that.

Eigth Episode
Jitters
Ryan
Shattered - It was between this and 'Solitude.' This just about won out.
Spell
Solitude

I missed the first round, but here's my choices for the second four.

Fifth Episode
Cool
Nocturne
Perry
Run
Thirst

Sixth Episode
Hourglass
Redux
Relic
Transference
Exposed

Seventh Episode
Craving
Lineage
Magnetic
Jinx
Splinter

Eigth Episode
Jitters
Ryan
Shattered
Spell
Solitude

Aside from Jitters, I could have picked all of the eighth episodes. But I'll go with Ryan, because that episode just encompassed everything Clark Kent and Smallville is for me.

Fifth Episode
Cool
Nocturne
Perry
Run - I liked Perry, but I LOVED Run.
Thirst

Sixth Episode
Hourglass
Redux
Relic - Okay.. this is NO FAIR! I seriously can't choose b/w Relic and Transference. I'm going with Relic, only because it comes first alphabetically.
Transference
Exposed

Seventh Episode
Craving
Lineage
Magnetic
Jinx
Splinter - As much as I enjoyed Jinx, Splinter is one of my all-time faves.

Eigth Episode
Jitters
Ryan - kinda 50/50 again with Shattered, but the Ryan story was the first story in SV that made me cry.. so I guess that means something.
Shattered
Spell
Solitude

I think I'll probably blow a few minds with this one, but what the hell. My choice of episodes is based solely on what I enjoyed the most, and what I'm more apt to watch over and over again. So...

Fifth Episode
Cool
Nocturne
Perry <-- This one was tough because I *really* like Run.
Run
Thirst

Sixth Episode
Hourglass
Redux
Relic
Transference <-- This one was tougher than Run/Perry because Relic is the ep that MADE me a SV fan. Period. But very few episodes beat Transference in overall joy, so Transference "wins."
Exposed

Seventh Episode
Craving
Lineage
Magnetic
Jinx
Splinter <-- Hah! DUUUUUH!!!! No contest. I wish they were all this easy.

Eighth Episode
Jitters
Ryan
Shattered
Spell <-- Um... yeah, really. I aint gonna explain myself on this one. Putting Spell ahead of Ryan, Shattered and Solitude is embarrassing enough, but I LOVE Spell, so nyah! Sue me. :p ;)

:wow: Pat? Did you take the wrong little pill this morning?

I'm absolutely shocked. I loved Spell, but you know, for me that makes sense. ;) For you.. not so much. LOL.. but I think I understand why you'd say that. Spell is a lot of "fun" if you aren't being too serious and nit-picky about things.

I actually really liked Jitters (I loved Tony Todd on DS9) because it was the first FOTW that was original IMHO. (Rather than random teenager develops superpower and becomes homicidal, that is.)

And the writers enjoyed the whole Level 3 plotline so much that they recently regurgitated it this season for "Static." ;)

Also, I like that this ep intro'd Krypto-poisoning. Though other than Earl Jenkins and Dr. Hamilton, it for some reason hasn't affected anyone else.

I didnt dislike it, it just wasnt as polished as the other 8th season episodes. You could tell that Smallville was still in their green phase.

What did he play in DS9? I only remember him as Worf's brother on TNG.

Oh nevermind he was Jake Sisco in the future.:cwink:

...Spell is a lot of "fun" if you aren't being too serious and nit-picky about things.
EXACTLY!!!

See, of the five eps in that group, Solitude *should* "win" for best ep, IMHO, just like Pilot should have "won" for best ep in the first category. But I didn't vote with the intention of making a "best of" DVD for Superman fans; I voted for most entertaining episode (for me). Unless otherwise stipulated, that's how I'll always vote for something, because after all, I don't care what other people think, I vote for what makes ME happy on a gut level. Y'know?

...and uh... well, c'mon? Think of some of the scenes in Spell. Helloooooo? I was a VEWY happy campah watching that episode. Very happy. :p ;) :D

Yup! "The Visitor" is mos def one of my favorite Trek episodes ever.

Much like "Ryan," just thinking about the scene where Jake loses Sisko all over again gets me all weepy... :(
