So, when is HBO gonna get around to making a Dune series?

I haven't actually gotten around to reading the book, much less those that follow it (though I would like to at some point). But from what I've heard, it's so expansive and dense and not-film-friendly, that doing it as an HBO series, in the same manner as Game of Thrones has been done, would seem to be the best way to go.

Thoughts?

Hard to say. GOT is successful because the stories are original but yet are familiar. Like British history with a bit of Dickens, plus the usual heroic tropes from Greek mythology and the Bible thrown in there, though often turned on their head.

Dune is one of my favorite books, but it really is off the map when it comes to relatability for the general TV audience member.

The first book is doable, but everything after that is a bit too esoteric. The Sci-Fi series of Children of Dune isn't awful, though. Great soundtrack.

I would not mind a new series with GOT budget and production quality but the 2010 TV show is still too fresh I think. Some times ago there was a film rumor ( directed by Peter Berg ) but it didn't went far.
Also, I'm not sure that the entertainment industry is very interested in Dune for a film and 2 TV shows were already made, it's not fresh and nowadays it's all about zombie, medieval or heroic fantasy and vampire.

And as always : Spice must flow.

Also, the geopolitical analogy might disturb the pro-American audience. Though the controversy might attract more viewers.

I wouldn't mind seeing an HBO adaptation of Dune. That would be cool. It might not suit everyone but I could see them delving into Brian Herbert's House prequel trilogy of books and perhaps Paul of Dune and Winds of Dune (?) as well, and ending the series with Children of Dune/God Emperor of Dune instead of going out further. Because God Emperor is really pushing it.

Assuming you already saw Children of Dune for young McAvoy.

It is a tough call. I love the Dune series. I even enjoy the Brian Herbert/Kevin J. Anderson continuations. I would love to see the main series on the screen sometime. I think a lot of the concepts it deals with, though, are a bit difficult to bring to the screen. I wouldn't mind someone trying, though.

^ Yup a miniseries for these books was already made, by the Sci-Fi (not SyFy) Channel.

Sci-Fi did a great job adapting Dune & Children Of Dune. I'd love to see God Emperor of Dune, but I don't think it would translate well onscreen.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
